Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart and Lung Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 0BB, UK; Department of Medicine, University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, Cambridge CB2 0QQ, UK. Electronic address:

Aims: Bone morphogenetic protein-9 (BMP9) is critical for bone morphogenetic protein receptor type-2 (BMPR2) signalling in pulmonary vascular endothelial cells. Furthermore, human genetics studies support the central role of disrupted BMPR2 mediated BMP9 signalling in vascular endothelial cells in the initiation of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). In addition, loss-of-function mutations in BMP9 have been identified in PAH patients.

Subjectivity and ambiguity of visual field classification limits the accuracy and reliability of glaucoma diagnosis, prognostication, and management decisions. Standardised rules for classifying glaucomatous visual field defects exist, but these are labour-intensive and therefore impractical for day-to-day clinical work. Here a web-application, Glaucoma Field Defect Classifier (GFDC), for automatic application of Hodapp-Parrish-Anderson, is presented and validated in a cross-sectional study.

Exploring the changing association between parental and adolescent fruit and vegetable intakes, from age 10 to 30 years.

Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act

May 2024

MRC Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge Level 3 Institute of Metabolic Science, University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, Cambridge, CB2 0SL, UK.

Background: Adolescence is a pivotal developmental stage, where escalating rates of overweight and obesity have raised concerns about diet quality and its association with adverse health outcomes. Parents are known to have considerable influence on childhood diet, but how this influence changes as adolescents mature is unknown. This study investigates the association between parental fruit and vegetable (FV) intake and adolescent FV consumption, exploring how this changes across adolescence and when adolescents leave home.

Background: Rabies virus (RABV; species Lyssavirus rabies) is causing one of the oldest zoonotic diseases known to mankind, leading to fatal encephalomyelitis in animals and humans. Despite the existence of safe and effective vaccines to prevent the disease, an estimated 99% of human rabies deaths worldwide are caused by dog-mediated rabies with children at the highest risk of infection. Rabies has been endemic in Madagascar for over a century, yet there has been little research evaluating local knowledge and practices impacting on the rabies control and prevention.

Bone morphogenetic protein signalling in pulmonary arterial hypertension: revisiting the BMPRII connection.

Biochem Soc Trans

June 2024

VPD Heart and Lung Research Institute, Department of Medicine, University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, Cambridge CB2 0BB, U.K.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious condition that leads to high blood pressure in the lungs, causing problems like right heart failure, and is influenced by abnormal changes in blood vessels and genetic factors, particularly involving bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling.
  • The BMP pathway is crucial for healthy blood vessel function, and issues with this signaling, especially involving the BMPR2 gene, are tightly linked to the development of PAH.
  • A new treatment called Sotatercept has been approved for PAH, although its mechanisms and target cells aren't fully understood; the review aims to explore BMPRII's role and how new therapies might improve BMP signaling to treat this disease.
