The recent rediscovery of 1D and quasi-1D (q-1D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals has laid foundation for the realization of emergent electronic, optical, and quantum-confined physical phenomena in both bulk and at the nanoscale. Of these, the highly anisotropic q-1D vdW crystal structure and the visible-light optical/optoelectronic properties of antimony trisulfide (SbS) have led to its widespread consideration as a promising building block for photovoltaic and non-volatile phase change devices. Anisotropy often yields unexpected structures and properties in the solid state. In van der Waals (vdW) solids comprised of 1D or quasi-1D (q-1D) building blocks, anisotropy in both intra- and inter-chain directions results in an abundance of crystalline packing motifs and drastically altered physical states. Among these, structurally and chemically complex 1D/q-1D vdW solids that display topologically protected states, unique optical properties, and enhanced electrical transport properties in 1D are sought after owing to their potential as building blocks for next-generation quantum devices that approach the sub-nanometer regime.

Metalloproteins with dinuclear cores are known to bind and activate dioxygen, with a subclass of these proteins having active sites containing FeMn cofactors and activities ranging from long-range proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) to post-translational peptide modification. While mechanistic studies propose that these metallocofactors access FeMn intermediates, there is a dearth of related synthetic analogs. Herein, the first well-characterized synthetic Fe-(μ-O)-Mn complex is reported; this complex shows similar spectroscopic features as the catalytically competent FeMn intermediate X found in Class Ic ribonucleotide reductase and demonstrates PCET function towards phenolic substrates.

Implementation of long-lasting insecticide-treated net (LLIN) programs to control human malaria transmission leads to substantial reductions in the abundance of mosquitoes, but the impact on the population genetic structure of the malaria vectors is poorly known, nor has it been investigated in Papua New Guinea, where malaria is highly endemic and where several species of have vector roles. Here, we applied Wright's -statistic, analysis of molecular variance, Bayesian structure analysis, and discriminant analysis of principle components to microsatellite genotype data to analyze the population genetic structure of between and within the northern and southern lowland plains and of within the northern plain of Papua New Guinea after such a program. Bottleneck effects in the two malaria vectors were analyzed using Luikart and Cornuet's tests of heterozygosity.

A combination of accelerated population growth and severe droughts has created pressure on food security and driven the development of irrigation schemes across sub-Saharan Africa. Irrigation has been associated with increased malaria risk, but risk prediction remains difficult due to the heterogeneity of irrigation and the environment. While investigating transmission dynamics is helpful, malaria models cannot be applied directly in irrigated regions as they typically rely only on rainfall as a source of water to quantify larval habitats.

Introduction: To reduce demands on expert time and improve clinical efficiency, we developed a framework to evaluate whether inexpensive, accessible data could accurately classify Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical diagnosis and predict the likelihood of progression.

Methods: We stratified relevant data into three tiers: obtainable at primary care (low-cost), mostly available at specialty visits (medium-cost), and research-only (high-cost). We trained several machine learning models, including a hierarchical model, an ensemble model, and a clustering model, to distinguish between diagnoses of cognitively unimpaired, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia due to AD.

Microscopes are essential for the biomechanical and hydrodynamical investigation of small aquatic organisms. We report a do-it-yourself microscope (GLUBscope) that enables the visualization of organisms from two orthogonal imaging planes - top and side views. Compared to conventional imaging systems, this approach provides a comprehensive visualization strategy of organisms, which could have complex shapes and morphologies.

Understanding the genetic complexity of puberty timing across the allele frequency spectrum.

Pubertal timing varies considerably and has been associated with a range of health outcomes in later life. To elucidate the underlying biological mechanisms, we performed multi-ancestry genetic analyses in ~800,000 women, identifying 1,080 independent signals associated with age at menarche. Collectively these loci explained 11% of the trait variance in an independent sample, with women at the top and bottom 1% of polygenic risk exhibiting a ~11 and ~14-fold higher risk of delayed and precocious pubertal development, respectively.

Background: A hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD) is progressive loss of dopamine terminals in the basal ganglia, with clinical symptoms including motor and non-motor manifestations such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and cognitive impairment. Dopamine transporter single-photon emission computed tomography (DaT-SPECT) can be used to assess dopaminergic denervation by detecting loss of striatal dopamine transporters (DaT).

We introduce two new drought stress algorithms designed to simulate isoprene emission with the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN) model. The two approaches include the representation of the impact of drought on isoprene emission with a simple empirical approach for offline MEGAN applications and a more process-based approach for online MEGAN in Community Land Model (CLM) simulations. The two versions differ in their implementation of leaf-temperature impacts of mild drought.
