Background: Smaller prostates have been linked to unfavorable clinical characteristics and poor short-term outcomes following radical prostatectomy (RP). We examined the relation between prostate weight at RP and prostate cancer (PC) outcomes post-RP.
Methods: Men in the SEARCH cohort undergoing RP between 1988 and 2017 (N = 6242) were studied for PC-specific mortality (PCSM) as the primary outcome, and for biochemical recurrence (BCR), castration-resistant PC (CRPC) and metastasis as secondary outcomes.

Germline DDX41 variants in myeloid neoplasms (MNs) are not uncommon, and we explored the prevalence and characterized the clinical and pathologic features in a cohort of 3132 unrelated adult MN patients. By targeted next-generation sequencing, we identified 28 patients (20 men and 8 women) with pathogenic germline DDX41 variants who developed acute myeloid leukemia (AML), in which only 3 (11%) had a family history (FH) of MNs. A subacute clinical course of cytopenia (mean duration of 11.

Background: Identification of portal venous gas on radiographic imaging is well documented after the ingestion of hydrogen peroxide, as is its resolution after hyperbaric therapy. Although hyperbaric therapy may resolve the gastrointestinal symptoms associated with the presence of portal venous gas, the principle rationale for performing hyperbaric therapy is to prevent subsequent central nervous system oxygen embolization.
Case Report: We describe a patient with portal venous gas identified by computed tomography after the ingestion of 3% hydrogen peroxide, managed without hyperbaric therapy, who subsequently developed portal venous thrombosis.

Federated learning of data from multiple participating parties is getting more attention and has many healthcare applications. We have previously developed VERTIGO, a distributed logistic regression model for vertically partitioned data. The model takes advantage of the linear separation property of kernel matrices of a dual space model to harmonize information in a privacy-preserving manner.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is frequently the most common Apheresis Medicine technique used for extracorporeal therapy of a wide variety of renal, neurological, hematological, and other clinical indications. Many of these clinical indications require intensive care during critical illness. Conventional TPE uses one of two main technical methods to achieve the goal of removing known disease mediators from the plasma: using centrifugal forces to separate and remove components of blood, or a membrane filtration method that separates plasma from the cellular components of blood.

Background: The link between diabetes and prostate cancer progression is poorly understood and complicated by obesity. We investigated associations between diabetes and prostate cancer-specific mortality (PCSM), castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), and metastases in obese and nonobese men undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP).
Methods: We included 4688 men from the Shared Equal Access Regional Cancer Hospital cohort of men undergoing RP from 1988 to 2017.

The pathogenesis of follicular lymphoma is a multi-step process, in which chromosomal translocation between immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) and anti-apoptotic B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL2), namely IgH-BCL2, is an earliest step, followed by other genetic/genomic alterations including but not limited to mutation of CREB binding protein (CREBBP). MHC class II transactivator (CIITA) is a transcription regulator responsible for expression of MHC class II molecules including HLA-DR in human. We report herein a novel fusion gene involving CIITA and CREBBP in a patient with a low-grade follicular lymphoma (FL) but with high Ki-67 proliferation index.

Background: Real-world utilization and outcomes of combination therapy for men with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) are largely unknown. We evaluated the overall survival (OS) and skeletal-related events (SREs) among men who received radium-223 with or without concomitant abiraterone or enzalutamide in the Veterans Affairs (VA) Health System.
Methods: We reviewed charts of all mCRPC patients who received radium-223 in the VA from January 2013 to September 2017.

Objective: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a recognized predictor of long-term survival, frequently coexisting with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a more accurate marker of renal function than creatinine. This study sought to determine the graded impact of CKD, defined by eGFR, on infrainguinal lower extremity bypass (LEB) outcomes.

Purpose: Mitral annular flutter (MAF) is a common arrhythmia after atrial fibrillation ablation. We sought to compare the efficacy and safety of catheter ablation utilizing either a left atrial anterior wall (LAAW) line or a lateral mitral isthmus (LMI) line.
Methods: We performed a systematic review for all studies that compared LAAW versus LMI lines.

Purpose: Circulating inflammatory markers may predict prostate cancer (PC) outcomes. For example, a recent study showed that higher peripheral blood monocyte counts were associated with aggressive PC in Asian men undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP). Herein, we investigated whether peripheral monocyte count can predict long-term PC outcomes after RP in black and white men.

Background: The aim of this study is to describe the economic trends in adults who underwent elective thyroidectomy.
Methods: We performed a population-based study utilizing the Premier Healthcare Database to examine adult patients who underwent elective thyroidectomy between January 2006 and December 2014. Time was divided into three equal time periods (2006-2008, 2009-2011, and 2012-2014).

BI-RADS is a communication and data tracking system that has evolved since its inception as a brief mammography lexicon and reporting guide into a robust structured reporting platform and comprehensive quality assurance tool for mammography, ultrasound, and MRI. Consistent and appropriate use of the BI-RADS lexicon terminology and assessment categories effectively communicates findings, estimates the risk of malignancy, and provides management recommendations to patients and referring clinicians. The impact of BI-RADS currently extends internationally through six language translations.

Catheter ablation improves clinical outcomes in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, the role of catheter ablation in HF with a preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is less clear. We performed a literature search and systematic review of studies that compared AF recurrence at one year after catheter ablation of AF in patients with HFpEF versus those with HFrEF.

Methods: We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies evaluating TE in COVID-19.

Objective: Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) using a flow-reversal neuroprotection system has gained popularity for the endovascular treatment of carotid artery atherosclerotic disease owing to its lower risk of stroke or death compared with transfemoral carotid artery stenting. However, specific risk factors associated with stroke or death complications after TCAR have yet to be defined.
Methods: All patients undergoing TCAR for the treatment of asymptomatic or symptomatic atherosclerotic carotid disease were identified between September 2016 and September 2019 in the Vascular Quality Initiative TCAR Surveillance Project.
