Novel homozygous nonsense mutation in glucagon-like peptide-2 receptor gene resulting in severe human illness.

JPGN Rep

November 2024

Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition Valley Children's Healthcare Madera California USA.

Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP2) acts on the GLP2 receptor (GLP2R) and plays a role in intestinal growth and adaptation. The endogenous actions of GLP2R do not have an established association with human disease, although mouse-knockout models in a stressed state show enhanced susceptibility to small bowel injury, increased morbidity, mortality, and abnormal host-bacterial interactions. We report an 11-month-old female with multiple intensive care unit admissions for severe metabolic acidosis due to profuse nonbloody diarrhea in the context of various infections.

Anthropogenic aerosols (AER) and greenhouse gases (GHG)-the leading drivers of the forced historical change-produce different large-scale climate response patterns, with correlations trending from negative to positive over the past century. To understand what caused the time-evolving comparison between GHG and AER response patterns, we apply a low-frequency component analysis to historical surface ocean changes from CESM1 single-forcing large-ensemble simulations. While GHG response is characterized by its first leading mode, AER response consists of two distinct modes.

Background: Prognostically meaningful tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is not well-defined in the mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair arena. We aimed to explore the prevalence, correlates, and consequences of TR grades and postprocedural trends in this setting.

Methods And Results: A single-center registry of isolated, first-time interventions was retrospectively assessed for pre-, intra-, and postprocedural aspects up to 1 year, of them the primary composite outcome of all-cause deaths or heart failure (HF) hospitalizations, all according to TR severity at baseline and at 1 month following mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair.

Successful nerve repair using bioadhesive hydrogels demands minimizing tissue-material interfacial mechanical mismatch to reduce immune responses and scar tissue formation. Furthermore, it is crucial to maintain the bioelectrical stimulation-mediated cell-signaling mechanism to overcome communication barriers within injured nerve tissues. Therefore, engineering bioadhesives for neural tissue regeneration necessitates the integration of electroconductive properties with tissue-like biomechanics.

Immunocytochemistry assessment of vocal fold regeneration after cell-based implant in rabbits.

Laryngoscope Investig Otolaryngol

October 2024

Research Service Greater Los Angeles VAHS Los Angeles California USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the use of cell-based outer vocal fold replacement (COVR) for severe vocal fold scarring or cancer recovery, specifically using human adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) in rabbits.
  • Immunocytochemistry was employed to analyze samples taken two months post-implantation, focusing on markers for human cells and other cellular features.
  • The results indicate that implanted human ASC persist and some express CD31, while smooth muscle actin was present across all samples, suggesting a mix of implanted and host cells creating a hybrid vocal fold structure.

Cu dissolution has been identified as the dominant process that causes cathode degradation and losses even under cathodic conditions involving methylamine. Despite extensive experimental research, our fundamental and theoretical understanding of the atomic-scale mechanism for Cu dissolution under electrochemical conditions, eventually coupled with surface restructuring processes, is limited. Here, driven by the observation that the working Cu electrode is corroded using mixtures of acetone and methylamine even under reductive potential conditions (-0.

Parkinsonian disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), dementia with Lewy body (DLB), corticobasal syndrome (CBS) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) are often misdiagnosed due to overlapping symptoms and the absence of precise biomarkers. Furthermore, there are no current methods to ascertain the progression and conversion of prodromal conditions such as REM behaviour disorder (RBD). Extracellular vesicles (EVs), containing a mixture of biomolecules, have emerged as potential sources for parkinsonian diagnostics.

A guide to caring for patients who identify as transgender and gender diverse in the emergency department.

J Am Coll Emerg Physicians Open

June 2024

Department of Emergency Medicine Trinity Health Ann Arbor Ypsilanti Michigan USA.

Through a review of current research, standards of care, and best practices, this paper serves as a resource for emergency physicians (EPs) caring for persons who identify as transgender and gender diverse (T/GD) in the emergency department (ED). Both patient- and physician-based research have identified existent potential knowledge gaps for EPs caring for T/GD in the ED. T/GD have negative experiences related to their gender identity when seeking emergency medical care and may even delay emergency care for fear of discrimination.

Objectives: Cisplatin is known to cause inner ear dysfunction. There is growing evidence that cisplatin-induced demyelination of spiral or Scarpa's ganglion neurons may play an additional role in drug-induced ototoxicity alongside afferent neuron injury. As Schwann cells produce myelin, there may be an opportunity to reduce ototoxic inner ear damage by promoting Schwann cell viability.
