In this study, a physically based drought index, the Standardized Moisture Anomaly Index (SZI), was modified and improved by incorporating the effects of snow dynamics for drought characterization at multiple time scales. The new version of the SZI, called SZI, includes snow in both the water supply and demand in drought characterization by using the water-energy budgets from the Global Land Data Assimilation Systems product.

Optical cavities hold great promise to manipulate and control the photochemistry of molecules. We demonstrate how molecular photochemical processes can be manipulated by strong light-matter coupling. For a molecule with an inherent conical intersection, optical cavities can induce significant changes in the nonadiabatic dynamics by either splitting the pristine conical intersections into two novel polaritonic conical intersections or by creating light-induced avoided crossings in the polaritonic surfaces.

Here, we compare stable and radiogenic carbon isotope compositions of microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) with those of in situ potential microbial C sources to assess the major C sources for subsurface microorganisms in biogeochemical distinct shallow aquifers (Critical Zone Exploratory, Thuringia Germany). Despite the presence of younger OC, the microbes assimilated C-free OC to varying degrees; ~31% in groundwater within the oxic zone, ~47% in an iron reduction zone, and ~70% in a sulfate reduction/anammox zone.

The infection of cells by multiple copies of a given virus can impact viral evolution in a variety of ways, yet some of the most basic evolutionary dynamics remain underexplored. Using computational models, we investigate how infection multiplicity affects the fixation probability of mutants, the rate of mutant generation, and the timing of mutant invasion. An important insight from these models is that for neutral and disadvantageous phenotypes, rare mutants initially enjoy a fitness advantage in the presence of multiple infection of cells.

We present an innovative mapping of bed topography in the frontal regions of Sermeq Avannarleq and Kujalleq, two major glaciers flowing into the ice-choked Torssukatak Fjord, central west Greenland. The mapping combines a mass conservation algorithm inland, multibeam echo sounding data in the fjord, and high-resolution airborne gravity data at the ice-ocean transition where other approaches have traditionally failed.

We theorize that the incidence of births before the 28th week of gestation, which contribute disproportionately to infant morbidity and mortality, varies over time in part due to reproductive suppression in the form of selection in utero. We further theorize that the prevalence of structural birth defects among survivors to birth from conception cohorts gauges selection in utero.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA 5,5- -luciferin was prepared to measure isotope effects on reactions of two intermediates in firefly bioluminescence: emission by oxyluciferin and elimination of a putative luciferyl adenylate hydroperoxide to dehydroluciferin. A negligible isotope effect on bioluminescence provides further support for the belief that the emitting species is the keto-phenolate of oxyluciferin and rules out its excited-state tautomerization, one potential contribution to a bioluminescence quantum yield less than unity. A small isotope effect on dehydroluciferin formation supports a single-electron-transfer mechanism for reaction of the luciferyl adenylate enolate with oxygen to form the hydroperoxide or dehydroluciferin.
