Background: HIV remains a major challenge in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, particularly for young women who face disproportionate risks and barriers to prevention and treatment. Most HIV cure trials, however, occur in high-income countries.
Objective: To examine the perspectives of young women diagnosed with acute HIV in a longitudinal study, focusing on their perceptions on ATI-inclusive HIV cure trials and the barriers and facilitators to participation.
Background: PD-L1 and VEGF blockade with atezolizumab plus bevacizumab has been shown to improve survival in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. TIGIT is an immune checkpoint regulator implicated in many cancers, including unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. Here, we evaluate the clinical activity and safety of the addition of tiragolumab, an anti-TIGIT monoclonal antibody, to atezolizumab plus bevacizumab.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients are 90% women and over three times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than women in the general population. Chest pain with no obstructive cardiac disease is associated with coronary microvascular disease (CMD), where narrowing of the small blood vessels can lead to ischemia, and frequently reported by SLE patients. Using whole blood RNA samples, we asked whether gene signatures discriminate SLE patients with coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) on cardiac MRI (n = 4) from those without (n = 7) and whether any signaling pathway is linked to the underlying pathobiology of SLE CMD.

Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is an uncommon chronic myeloproliferative disorder that is commonly associated with Janus kinase 2 (JAK-2), calreticulin (CALR), or thrombopoietin receptor (MPL) mutations. Pre-fibrotic PMF (also known as pre-PMF or early PMF) is a subtype of PMF that is defined by a lower grade of fibrosis. In this report, we present a rare case of warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA) associated with pre-PMF.

Nowadays, consent to use donor bodies for medical education and research is obtained from the body donors and their families before the donation. Recently, the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) published guidelines that could restrict the appearance of cadaveric images in commercial anatomical resources such as textbooks and other educational products. These guidelines state that the donor must expressly consent to using such images for this purpose.

Background: Educational attainment is a well-established social determinant of various domains of cognitive function across the lifespan. However, the theory of Minorities' Diminished Returns (MDRs) suggests that the health benefits of educational attainment tend to be weaker for ethnic minorities compared to non-Latino Whites. This phenomenon may reflect the impact of structural inequalities, social stratification, and historical disadvantage.

Clinical trials of treatments for stroke have generally utilized 2-arm, randomized designs to evaluate a single intervention against a control. Running separate clinical trials, with each addressing a single therapeutic question, is resource intensive and slows evidence generation, especially in a field with rapidly expanding treatment options and evolving practices. Platform trials-randomized clinical trials designed to evaluate multiple interventions that may enter and exit the ongoing platform based on a master protocol-accelerate the investigation of multiple therapeutic options within a single infrastructure.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) have revolutionized cancer therapy, but their use is limited by the development of autoimmunity in healthy tissues as a side effect of treatment. Such immune-related adverse events (IrAE) contribute to hospitalizations, cancer treatment interruption and even premature death. ICI-induced autoimmune diabetes mellitus (ICI-T1DM) is a life-threatening IrAE that presents with rapid pancreatic beta-islet cell destruction leading to hyperglycemia and life-long insulin dependence.

Permanent cardiac pacing in children with congenital complete atrioventricular block (CCAVB) and/or congenital heart disease (CHD) is challenging. Conduction system pacing (CSP) represents a novel pacing strategy aiming to preserve physiological ventricular activation. Patients with CCAVB or CHD are at high risk of developing pacing-induced cardiomyopathy with chronic conventional right ventricular myocardial pacing.

The sympathetic nervous system modulates cardiac contractile and electrophysiological function and contributes to adverse remodelling following myocardial infarction (MI). Axonal modulation therapy (AMT), directed at the sympathetic chain, blocks efferent sympathetic outflow to the heart and is a strategy to transiently and controllably mitigate chronic MI-associated sympatho-excitation. In porcine models, we evaluated scalable AMT, directed at the paravertebral chain, in blocking reflex-mediated pacing-induced sympatho-excitation post-MI.
