Article Synopsis
  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common form of dementia, with causes linked to mitochondrial issues, oxidative stress, and ion channel problems.
  • A rat study using 40 Hz flickering light therapy showed that this treatment improved cognitive function and countered biochemical changes caused by AD, like increased reactive oxygen species and amyloid beta buildup.
  • The therapy also restored important mitochondrial functions, suggesting that flickering light might be a potential treatment for AD and similar neurodegenerative conditions.

Atypical Tactile Perception in Early Childhood Autism.

J Autism Dev Disord

Department of Radiology, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary Alberta Children's Hospital, Office B4-512 28 Oki Drive NW, T3B 6A8, Calgary, AB, Canada.

We assessed different aspects of tactile perception in young children (3-6 years) with autism. Autistic and neurotypical children completed vibrotactile tasks assessing reaction time, amplitude discrimination (sequential and simultaneous) and temporal discrimination (temporal order judgment and duration discrimination). Autistic children had elevated and more variable reaction times, suggesting slower perceptual-motor processing speed and/or greater distractibility.

Objectives: Coaches improve cardiopulmonary (CPR) outcomes in real-world and simulated settings. To explore verbal feedback that targets CPR quality, we used natural language processing (NLP) methodologies on transcripts from a published pediatric randomized trial (coach vs. no coach in simulated CPR).

Background: Kidney transplantation is the therapy of choice for many patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) with an improvement in survival rates and satisfactory short term graft survival. However, there has been little improvement in long-term survival. The place of target of rapamycin inhibitors (TOR-I) (sirolimus, everolimus), which have different modes of action from other commonly used immunosuppressive agents, in kidney transplantation remains uncertain.

Social and emotional competencies, such as distress regulation, are established in early childhood and are critical for the development of children's mental health and wellbeing. Routine vaccinations in primary care provide a unique opportunity to relate responses to a universal, relatively standardized, distress regulation paradigm (i.e.

Characterizing the Pain Narratives of Parents of Youth With Chronic Pain.

Clin J Pain

*Department of Psychology, University of Calgary †Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, Calgary, AB, Canada ‡Center for Child Health, Behavior & Development, Seattle Children's Research Institute §Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, WA.

Objectives: Questionnaire-based research has shown that parents exert a powerful influence on and are profoundly influenced by living with a child with chronic pain. Examination of parents' pain narratives through an observational lens offers an alternative approach to understanding the complexity of pediatric chronic pain; however, the narratives of parents of youth with chronic pain have been largely overlooked. The present study aimed to characterize the vulnerability-based and resilience-based aspects of the pain narratives of parents of youth with chronic pain.

Purpose: Dexamethasone reduces postoperative morbidity after adenotonsillectomy, strabismus surgery, and third molar extraction. Our hypothesis was that dexamethasone would reduce pain and other morbidity in children undergoing dental surgery for up to 24 hr postoperatively.

Methods: A triple-blinded, randomized, controlled trial was carried out on 200 children undergoing prolonged dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia.

Social information processing in adolescents with chronic pain: my friends don't really understand me.

Adolescents with chronic pain are at risk for impairment in their friendships. They miss out on leisure activities, have increased school absence, may have fewer friends, are at an increased risk for victimization, and may be perceived by peers as less likeable. To help determine the source of these problems, the Social Information Processing Model (SIP) was adapted using narrative vignettes to determine if adolescents with chronic pain interpret friendship interactions differently in terms of supportive and nonsupportive behaviors compared to healthy peers.

Using observational data for decision analysis and economic analysis.

Division of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Calgary Alberta Children's Hospital, 2888 Shaganappi Trail N.W., Calgary, AB T3B 6A8, Canada.

In orthopaedic surgery, clinical decisions must often be made with imperfect information from observational studies and limited resources. Decision analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis have emerged as evidence-based tools to assist in making choices in situations in which uncertainty exists. This review demonstrates how decision-analysis and cost-effectiveness-analysis tools can be used to expand on published observational studies within the context of a specific clinical scenario.

Background: Previous studies have noted that the use of antifibrinolytic medications can help reduce blood loss and transfusion requirements during cardiac, total joint arthroplasty, and spine surgery. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been investigated in these patient groups but consensus with respect to the dosing regimen has not been achieved, especially in the pediatric scoliosis literature. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 2 TXA dosing regimens on reducing transfusion requirements.

Detailed physical mapping of oto-palato-digital (OPD) syndrome gene on the X-chromosome was attempted on a family of 3 generations with 2 affected men. Although the result remains statistically non-significant, it indicates that the OPD-I gene might be located on the distal Xq.
