Article Synopsis
  • Marine top predator populations, including a third of chondrichthyans, are declining, with the Mediterranean blue shark classified as critically endangered due to limited data on their population structure and connectivity.
  • A genetic study on 203 blue shark specimens identified subtle genetic differences both within the Mediterranean and between it and the Northeast Atlantic, suggesting demographic independence of Western and Eastern populations.
  • Despite limited reproductive interactions, the slight genetic differentiation hints at a recent shared history, indicating that Mediterranean blue sharks may act as a metapopulation influenced by local demographic changes and poor regulation of fishing practices.

-Sulfonatocalix[]arenes have shown excellent potential for accommodating chemotherapeutic drugs through host-guest complexation and enhancing their anticancer activity. Betaine has been reported to exert an anticancer effect at high concentrations. In order to increase its concentration in cancer cells, we have complexed it with -SC4, which releases its content in an acidic environment typical of cancer tissue.

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) and problematic social media use (PSMU) are two interrelated constructs which have received significant research attention over the past decade. The present study investigated the relationship between self-construal (distinguished as independent and interdependent), PSU and PSMU with Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) as a mediating variable. The sample comprised 405 Italian students who completed standardized psychometric scales assessing the variables of the study.

The follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSH-R) expression was always considered human gonad-specific. The receptor has also been newly detected in extragonadal tissues. In this finding, we evaluated FSH-R expression in the human male early genital tract, in testicular tumors, and in sperm from healthy and varicocele patients.

The action of myo-inositol (MI), belonging to the inositol family, has been shown to improve sperm quality. To further elucidate the efficacy of this substance in male fertility, we investigated the effects of a nutraceuticals mix, containing mainly myo-inositol (MI) and the action of the MI on human male gamete performance. Sperm samples were evaluated from 51 men: 21 healthy normozoospermic and 30 oligoasthenoteratozoospermic (OAT).

An innovative small molecule for promoting neuroreparative strategies.

RSC Adv

January 2018

University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Department of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Hanzeplein 1 9713 GZ Groningen Netherlands.

In this study, a new regenerative strategy to treat several neurodegenerative diseases is suggested by the use of a multitarget approach induced by our small molecule, MC111. Considering the importance of P-gp and BCRP expression on stem cell differentiation and the involvement of TLR4 on neurodegeneration processes, we investigated the effect of MC111, belonging to our library of P-gp active compounds on: (i) TLR4 signaling; (ii) P-gp and BCRP activity and expression; (iii) neurite sprouting. The observed findings exerted by MC111, open a new scenario for a multitarget and regenerative approach in neurodegenerative diseases encouraging the evaluation of MC111 as new tool in neuroreparative medicine.

Article Synopsis
  • Angiogenesis, the formation of blood vessels, is essential for cancer growth, and inhibiting it could slow tumor progression.
  • Natural polyphenol catechin has limited anti-tumor effects due to rapid metabolism, but when combined with dextran (Dextran-Catechin), its stability and efficacy are increased, particularly against neuroblastoma.
  • Dextran-Catechin disrupts copper homeostasis by generating reactive oxygen species and depleting key copper transport proteins, suggesting its potential as a new drug for tumors characterized by high copper levels.

Magnesium chloride (MgCl) is commonly used as a general anesthetic in cephalopods, but its physiological effects including those at cardiac level are not well-characterized. We used an isolated perfused systemic heart preparation from the common octopus, , to investigate: (a) if exposure to MgCl formulations had an effect on cardiac function and, if so, could this impact recovery and (b) direct effects of MgCl formulations on cardiac function. hearts removed from animals exposed to 3.

Neuroblastoma is frequently diagnosed at advanced stage disease and treatment includes high dose chemotherapy and surgery. Despite the use of aggressive therapy survival rates are poor and children that survive their disease experience long term side effects from their treatment, highlighting the need for effective and less toxic therapies. Catechin is a natural polyphenol with anti-cancer properties and limited side effects, however its mechanism of action is unknown.

Together with Chromogranin B and Secretogranins, Chromogranin A (CGA) is stored in secretory (chromaffin) granules of the diffuse neuroendocrine system and released with noradrenalin and adrenalin. Co-stored within the granule together with neuropeptideY, cardiac natriuretic peptide hormones, several prohormones and their proteolytic enzymes, CGA is a multifunctional protein and a major marker of the sympatho-adrenal neuroendocrine activity. Due to its partial processing to several biologically active peptides, CGA appears an important pro-hormone implicated in relevant modulatory actions on endocrine, cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune systems through both direct and indirect sympatho-adrenergic interactions.

Glutamine together with glucose is essential for body's homeostasis. It is the most abundant amino acid and is involved in many biosynthetic, regulatory and energy production processes. Several membrane transporters which differ in transport modes, ensure glutamine homeostasis by coordinating its absorption, reabsorption and delivery to tissues.

Insulin (Ins) has recently been demonstrated to have the ability to induce the capacitation process in pig spermatozoa. In various mammalian species, capacitation has been linked to the nitric oxide (NO) signalling; therefore, this study investigated NO production in Ins-treated pig spermatozoa by fluorescence-activated cell sorting. For the same samples, sperm capacitation was evaluated by chlortetracycline staining, protein tyrosine phosphorylation pattern and acrosomal status.

The effect of Tri-iodothyronine (T3) administration leading to the precocius differentiation of Sertoli cell in prepuberal rats has been previously shown. The functional maturation of Sertoli cells is associated with changes in androgen metabolism. We have recently demonstrated that T3 influences androgen metabolism in Sertoli cells by inhibiting aromatase activity and reduces drastically the ER contents in peripubertal hypothyroid rats.
