Background: Childbirth among adolescents and young mothers has been linked to various complications, including perinatal mortality, preterm births, low birth weight, and infections, which collectively contribute to the high burden of neonatal and maternal mortality. Despite some progress, the prevalence of skilled birth attendance, proven to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes, remains consistently low in Northern Nigeria. This study assessed the prevalence and determinants of Skilled Birth Attendance (SBA) among young women ages 15-24 years in Northern Nigeria.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. There is a significant burden of mortality from colorectal cancer in Africa. Due to the heterogeneity of dietary and lifestyle practices throughout Africa, our work sought to define risk factors for the development of CRC in the African continent.

Job stress is a critical factor of concern in police work across the world. While frustrations, exhaustion and emotional burnout in work places, particularly as they relate to police job, have been academically emphasized in more advanced climes, they are marginally addressed in less developed societies like Nigeria. Thus, this paper examines the psychological and physical impacts of job stress, workload, and burnout among police officers in Nigeria.

The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) heart transplant allocation policy was changed in 2018. This study examines the impact of the change in UNOS heart transplant allocation policy on the use of temporary mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices and post-transplant survival. The analysis included a total of 26,481 patients listed and transplanted between January 2013 and June 2022.

Background: The teaching of anatomy from early days of medical education relied on the use of cadaver; hence, the present study assessed the support for whole-body donation among academic staff.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted from January to March 2024 in Southwestern Ugandan medical educational schools among 160 academic staff. Ethical approval was obtained and structured questionnaires were distributed to study participants in the selected Medical Educational Schools.

Background: Sexual violence is prevalent in higher education institutions in Nigeria and stakeholders have encouraged staff and students to blow the whistle whenever they fall victim to or are aware of any sexual violence case. However, there is lack of data about whether the staff and students of these institutions have the intention to blow the whistle internally (within the institution) or not. There is also a lack of data on the existing reporting mechanisms or preferred whistleblowing mechanisms in these institutions.

HIV is one of the most threatening health conditions with a highly increasing rate, affecting millions of people globally, and from its time of discovery until now, its potential cure cannot be explicitly defined. This challenge of having no/low effective drugs for the subjected virus has called for serious attention in the scientific world of virus disease therapeutics. Most of these drugs yields low effectiveness due to poor delivery; hence, there is a need for novel engineering methods for efficient delivery.

The capacity of South African Heulandite HEU zeolite to remove Pb and Cd ions from aqueous solution was investigated using batch experiments and molecular simulations studies. The effect of different factors on the adsorption of these ions onto the zeolite was investigated; contact time, initial metal ion concentration and the amount of HEU adsorbent. Molecular simulations was done using Monte Carlo and density functional theory.

Prcis: Patients' acceptance of glaucoma therapy was high overall in this study, but lower for surgery than for laser or medical therapy. Fear and cost were the leading reasons why patients declined recommended therapy and they were treatment-specific. Cost was the primary reason for declining medical and laser therapy, while fear was the most common reason for declining surgical therapy.

Heart transplantation is a critical treatment option for end-stage heart failure patients, offering a lifeline for those with severe cardiac conditions. However, in Africa, the unmet need for heart transplantation is a significant issue that poses challenges to the healthcare system and patient outcomes. Africa faces multiple barriers to heart transplantation, including limited infrastructure, a shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, a lack of funding, and inadequate organ donation systems.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the intricate relationship between platelets, soluble platelet selectin (sP-selectin), and disease pathogenesis. Platelets, traditionally recognized for their role in hemostasis, have emerged as key contributors to the immunothrombotic complications observed in COVID-19 patients. Concurrently, elevated levels of sP-selectin, indicative of platelet activation and endothelial injury, have been consistently identified in COVID-19 patients and have shown associations with disease severity and adverse outcomes.

Introduction: The high neonatal mortality rate in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Nigeria has lasted for more than 30 years to date with associated nursing fatigue. Despite prominent hard work, technological improvements, and many publications released from the country since 1990, the problem has persisted, perhaps due to a lack of intervention scale-up. Could there be neglected discoveries unwittingly abandoned by Nigerian policymakers over the years, perhaps locked up in previous publications? A careful review may reveal these insights to alert policymakers, inspire researchers, and refocus in-country research efforts towards impactful directions for improving neonatal survival rates.

This research examined soil contamination and the uptake of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) by maize plants in mining communities. We collected 192 soil samples and 40 maize plant samples from two mining areas and a pristine site. We analyzed the physical properties and element content of the soil, including phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, Fe, Zn, Co, Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni.
