  • Aluminum alloys are popular for their high strength-to-weight ratio, achieved through alloying elements and heat treatments that create intermetallic particles (IMPs) which affect their corrosion resistance.
  • The review focuses on the electrochemical and galvanic corrosion behaviors of various important intermetallic compounds commonly found in aluminum alloys, detailing specific phases like Q-phase, π-phase, and θ-phase.
  • It also addresses limitations in studying these compounds, identifies research gaps, and discusses phenomena such as galvanic polarity reversal and the self-dissolution of IMPs.

Globally, household food waste alone accounts for about $700 billion in environmental costs owing to the resources expended in producing discarded or uneaten food, along with social costs reaching approximately $900 billion. Reducing this waste by 25% could potentially feed 821 million chronically undernourished individuals. This systematic review examines household food waste behaviour using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB).

Background: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is unavoidable during kidney transplant and it is responsible for delayed or non-function after kidney transplantation. Cysteamine is the standard drug in the management of nephropathic cystinosis and its extra-renal complications. Thus, we designed this study to investigate its potential against renal reperfusion injury.

Background: Under-five children mortality rate (U5MR) remains a crucial indicator of a nation's child healthcare and socioeconomic development. This study aims to identify and quantify significant maternal, child, family, and environmental risk factors contributing to under-five mortalities in the Northeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of secondary data from the 2018 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) in six northeastern Nigerian states.

At high exposure levels, airborne pollen grains and fungal spores (termed aerospora hereafter), can trigger severe allergic respiratory diseases. For South Africa's administrative capital Pretoria, which boasts dense vegetation within a large urban forest, it is valuable from a health perspective to understand daily atmospheric circulation patterns associated with high aerospora levels. Therefore, we utilised a daily aerospora grain count dataset collected in Pretoria from 08/2019-02/2023 to investigate atmospheric circulation patterns (derived from ERA5 reanalysis sea level pressure [SLP] and 500 hPa geopotential height [zg500] fields) associated with high-risk aerospora levels (aerospora grain count > 90th percentile).

Aim: Sub-Saharan Africa bears the highest burden of HIV/AIDS infections and constitutes 72% and 69% of AIDS-related deaths and people living with HIV worldwide, respectively. Due to the relationship between pulmonary infections and HIV/AIDS, it is biologically plausible that the surge in morbidity and mortality among HIV/AIDS patients could be attributed to an increase in pulmonary infections among this cohort of patients. This study determined the bacterial profile, susceptibility patterns, and factors associated with culture-positive sputum among HIV patients presenting with cough at the Lira Infectious Disease Centre in Northern Uganda.

Building sustainable capacity to adopt, adapt or develop child health guidelines, Malawi, Nigeria and South Africa.

Bull World Health Organ

October 2024

Cochrane South Africa, South African Medical Research Council, Cape Town, South Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • Many child health guidelines in Malawi, Nigeria, and South Africa are old and don’t involve enough people in making decisions.
  • The GELA project helped create better guidelines by getting groups together to discuss and prioritize the most important child health topics, using current evidence to adapt existing recommendations.
  • National teams in these countries created five new recommendations for child health, but they needed more evidence and training to make good decisions.

Plasmodium parasite causes malaria and affects the biochemical, physiological, and histoarchitecture of the hepatocytes and blood. The resultant effect leads to alterations in the metabolic activities of the liver, erythrocytes, as well as the buffer system. Therefore, we investigated the antiplasmodial activity, histomorphological studies of the hepatocytes and alterations in biochemical parameters in infected mice administered with the herbal formulation of aqueous extracts of stem bark and leaves.

In this paper, we employ density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) approaches to predict the solvatochromism and light-harvesting properties of a newly synthesized hybrid hexamine () vanadium-substituted Lindqvist-type ( ) polyoxometalate (POM), (CHNO)(CHN)[VWO]·6HO, ( ) for application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and noncovalent interaction (NCI) analyses show a 3D-supramolecular packing stabilized by means of hydrogen bonds and van der Waals (vdW) and ionic interactions between highly nucleophilic cage-like surfactant, lattice water, and electrophilic polyanions. Experimental and theoretical UV/vis absorption spectra show large absorption in the visible region, which is strongly solvent polarity dependent.
