Microbial electrochemical technologies (MET) can remove a variety of organic and inorganic pollutants from contaminated groundwater. However, despite significant laboratory-scale successes over the past decade, field-scale applications remain limited. We hypothesize that enhancing the electrochemical conductivity of the soil surrounding electrodes could be a groundbreaking and cost-effective alternative to deploying numerous high-surface-area electrodes in short distances.

Background: Subtle uterine lesions are abnormal intracavitary conditions that, while not causing significant anatomical changes, can adversely impact fertility. Identifying these "subtle" lesions is challenging due to arbitrary interpretation, varied management strategies, unclear clinical significance, and insufficient clinician training in recognizing them. Hysteroscopy offers direct visualization and the capacity to obtain targeted biopsies, making it an invaluable tool for the diagnosis and treatment of these often overlooked conditions.

Designing well-defined magnetic nanomaterials is crucial for various applications, and it demands a comprehensive understanding of their magnetic properties at the microscopic level. In this study, we investigate the contributions to the total anisotropy of Mn/Co mixed spinel nanoparticles. By employing neutron measurements sensitive to the spatially resolved surface anisotropy with sub-Å space resolution, we reveal an additional contribution to the anisotropy constant arising from shape anisotropy and interparticle interactions.

Liquid metals and metallic alloys often exist as metastable phases or can be undercooled below their equilibrium melting point. The Traditional CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) approach struggles to accurately model these metastable conditions, which are important in rapid quenching techniques like additive manufacturing, and to understand glass formation or oxidation phenomena occurring in the liquid phase during nuclear and high-temperature aerospace applications. On the contrary, the third-generation CALPHAD models have the potential to accurately describe metastable phase diagrams to provide better predictions of molten phase behavior under non-equilibrium conditions.

Mast cells are immune system cells with the most disparate functions, but are also among the least understood. Mast cells are implicated in several known pathological processes, tissue homeostasis, and wound repair. However, they owe their notoriety to allergic diseases, of which they represent the effector cell par excellence.

Tyrosinase, a key protein in the biosynthesis of melanin pigments, is crucial in determining skin pigmentation. Inhibiting tyrosinase activity is a promising approach for treating conditions related to excessive pigmentation. For the synthesis of more potent tyrosinase inhibitors, we combined two approaches, para-substitution and lipophilicity, to enhance the inhibitory properties of ()-2-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)hydrazine-1-carbotiamide, whose enzyme inhibitory properties have been previously demonstrated.

As cholinergic innervation is a major contributor to increased vagal tone and mucus secretion, inhaled long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMA) are a pillar for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. By blocking the muscarinic receptors expressed in the lung, LAMA improve lung function and reduce exacerbations in asthma patients who remained poorly controlled despite treatment with inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2 agonists. Asthma guidelines recommend LAMA as a third controller to be added on before the initiation of biologicals.

Oligomers of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein are characterized by pronounced instability resulting in fast degradation. This property likely relates to two contrasting behaviors of the N protein: genome stabilization through a compact nucleocapsid during cell evasion and genome release by nucleocapsid disassembling during infection. In vivo, the N protein forms rounded complexes of high molecular mass from its interaction with the viral genome.

Since leaving Africa, human populations have gone through a series of range expansions. While the genomic signatures of these expansions are well detectable on a continental scale, the genomic consequences of small-scale expansions over shorter time spans are more challenging to disentangle. The medieval migration of the Walser people from their homeland in ssouthern Switzerland (Upper Valais) into other regions of the Alps is a good example of such a comparatively recent geographic and demographic expansion in humans.
