Article Synopsis
  • Chest pain is common in pediatric emergencies, with most causes being benign; however, chest x-rays (CXR) are frequently ordered despite low rates of abnormalities.
  • A study reviewed medical records of 599 children to assess the adherence of physicians to guidelines for CXR usage, finding that 57.1% followed the recommended algorithm and only 8.2% had abnormal CXR results.
  • The findings suggest the need for improved guidelines for CXR prescriptions based on specific clinical indicators of chest pain, as current practices may overuse this test despite its limited diagnostic value.

Evolution and outcomes of aortic dilations in giant cell arteritis.

Eur J Intern Med

November 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Caen University Hospital, Caen, France; University of Caen Normandie, Caen, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify factors contributing to the progression of aortic dilations in patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA).
  • Among 47 analyzed patients, 28% experienced fast-progressive aortic dilations, while 34% had slow-progressive and 38% were not progressive, with no significant differences in baseline characteristics across these groups.
  • Fast-progressive patients were more likely to have atheromatous disease and used statins and antiplatelet agents more frequently; inflammation in the aorta was linked to dilation in the majority of patients with GCA-related aortitis.

Department of Functional Sciences, Comparative Veterinary Medicine, Fundamental and Applied Research for Animals & Health (FARAH), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Liege, Boulevard de Colonster 20, 4000 Liège, Belgium.

Thoroughbred (TB) racehorses undergo rigorous conditioning programs to optimize their physical and mental capabilities through varied exercise sessions. While conventional investigations focus on limited hematological and biochemical parameters, this field study employed untargeted metabolomics to comprehensively assess metabolic responses triggered by exercise sessions routinely used in TB conditioning. Blood samples were collected pre- and post-exercise from ten racehorses, divided into two groups based on exercise intensity: high intensity ( = 6, gallop at ± 13.

Heart failure is a chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Remote monitoring, which includes the use of non-invasive connected devices, cardiac implantable electronic devices and haemodynamic monitoring systems, has the potential to improve outcomes for patients with heart failure. Despite the conceptual and clinical advantages, there are still limitations in the widespread use of these technologies.

Background: Accessibility to the immense collection of studies on noncommunicable diseases related to coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an immediate focus of researchers. However, there is a scarcity of information about chronic obstructed pulmonary disease (COPD), which is associated with a high rate of infection in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, by combining the effects of the SARS-CoV-2 on COPD patients, we may be able to overcome formidable obstacles factors, and diagnosis influencers.

Unity Biology of Organisms and Aquatic Ecosystems (UMR 8067 BOREA), University of Caen-Normandie, Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Sorbonne University, CNRS, IRD, Université des Antilles, Esplanade de la Paix, 14032 Caen, France.

The following paper gives a detailed description of the oogenesis cycle for the European Plaice (), from oogonia to post-ovulatory follicle, including ovarian follicle and sizes. Noteworthy particularities were the difficulty in identifying cortical alveoli due to their very small size. Quantitative histology (stereology) on histological slides was used to determine a first size at maturity for females from the English Channel, which was found to be smaller compared to the literature (19 cm).

Splenomegaly is a hallmark of myelofibrosis, a debilitating haematological malignancy for which the only curative option is allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Considerable splenic enlargement might be associated with a higher risk of delayed engraftment and graft failure, increased non-relapse mortality, and worse overall survival after HCT as compared with patients without significantly enlarged splenomegaly. Currently, there are no standardised guidelines to assist transplantation physicians in deciding optimal management of splenomegaly before HCT.

Lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB), originating mainly in the colon, rectum and anus, occurs most often in older patients (7th decade) with co-morbidity, half of whom have coagulation abnormalities due to anti-coagulant or anti-aggregant therapy. In three cases out of four, bleeding regresses spontaneously but can recur in up to one third of patients. The main causes are diverticular disease, vascular disorders (hemorrhoids, angiodysplasia) and colitis.
