Most coexisting insect species exhibit stunted growth compared to individual species on plants. This phenomenon reflects an interspecific antagonism drawing extensive attention, while the underlying mechanisms remain largely uncharacterized. Mirids (Apolygus lucorum) and cotton bollworms (Helicoverpa armigera) are two common cotton pests.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Few drugs hold the ability to depress cardiac electrical and structural remodeling simultaneously after MI, which is crucial for the treatment of MI. The aim of this study is to investigate an effective therapy to improve both electrical and structural remodeling of the heart caused by MI.

Coronatine orchestrates ABI1-mediated stomatal opening to facilitate bacterial pathogen infection through importin β protein SAD2.

Plant J

July 2024

State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology and MOA Key Laboratory for Monitoring and Green Management of Crop Pests, China Agricultural University, Beijing, China.

Stomatal immunity plays an important role during bacterial pathogen invasion. Abscisic acid (ABA) induces plants to close their stomata and halt pathogen invasion, but many bacterial pathogens secrete phytotoxin coronatine (COR) to antagonize ABA signaling and reopen the stomata to promote infection at early stage of invasion. However, the underlining mechanism is not clear.

Plants can synthesize a wide range of terpenoids in response to various environmental cues. However, the specific regulatory mechanisms governing terpenoid biosynthesis at the cellular level remain largely elusive. In this study, we employed single-cell RNA sequencing to comprehensively characterize the transcriptome profile of cotton leaves and established a hierarchical transcriptional network regulating cell-specific terpenoid production.

Endocytosis-mediated entry of a caterpillar effector into plants is countered by Jasmonate.

Nat Commun

October 2023

CAS Key Laboratory of Insect Developmental and Evolutionary Biology, CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences (CEMPS), Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology (SIPPE), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Shanghai, China.

Insects and pathogens release effectors into plant cells to weaken the host defense or immune response. While the imports of some bacterial and fungal effectors into plants have been previously characterized, the mechanisms of how caterpillar effectors enter plant cells remain a mystery. Using live cell imaging and real-time protein tracking, we show that HARP1, an effector from the oral secretions of cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera), enters plant cells via protein-mediated endocytosis.

SARS-CoV-2 is a new virus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic. Although SARS-CoV-2 primarily affects the lungs, other organs are infected. Alterations of testosteronemia and spermatozoa motility in infected men have raised questions about testicular infection, along with high level in the testis of ACE2, the main receptor used by SARS-CoV-2 to enter host cells.

Structures of liganded glycosylphosphatidylinositol transamidase illuminate GPI-AP biogenesis.

Nat Commun

September 2023

State Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology, CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science, Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), University of CAS, Shanghai, China.

Many eukaryotic receptors and enzymes rely on glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchors for membrane localization and function. The transmembrane complex GPI-T recognizes diverse proproteins at a signal peptide region that lacks consensus sequence and replaces it with GPI via a transamidation reaction. How GPI-T maintains broad specificity while preventing unintentional cleavage is unclear.

Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Center for Excellence in Nanoscience, CAS Key Laboratory for Nanosystem and Hierarchical Fabrication, National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, Beijing, 100190, China.

Confined catalysis under the cover of 2D materials has emerged as a promising approach for achieving highly effective catalysts in various essential reactions. In this work, a porous cover structure is designed to boost the interfacial charge and mass transfer kinetics of 2D-covered catalysts. The improvement in catalytic performance is confirmed by the photoelectrochemical oxidation evolution reaction (OER) on a photoanode based on an n-Si substrate modified with a NiO thin-film model electrocatalyst covered with a porous graphene (pGr) monolayer.

Aortic aneurysm and dissection (AAD) are leading causes of death in the elderly. Recent studies have demonstrated that silicate ions can manipulate multiple cells, especially vascular-related cells. We demonstrated in this study that silicate ions as soluble form of bioactive ceramics effectively alleviated aortic aneurysm and dissection in both Ang II and β-BAPN induced AAD models.

Graphene-Based Photonic-like Highly Integrated Programmable Electronic Devices.

Key Laboratory of Microelectronic Devices and Integrated Technology, Institute of Microelectronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing100029, China.

Photonic-crystal-like devices and photonic-crystal-like microcavities in graphene are investigated theoretically. The results show that the size of the photonic-crystal-like device and the photonic-crystal-like microcavity is able to be scaled down to more than 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that of the realistic conventional photonic crystal with the same energy, due to the shorter optical-like transport wavelength in graphene. So, the graphene-based photonic-like devices offer a higher degree of integration than their conventional counterparts.

Article Synopsis
  • Tree peony (Paeonia ostii), native to China, is an important ornamental plant known for its seed oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids like α-linolenic acid (ALA).
  • Research presents a detailed chromosome-level genome assembly of tree peony, revealing that it hasn't experienced whole-genome duplication but instead underwent significant LTR expansion in intergenic regions.
  • Genome-wide association studies identify key genes involved in ALA synthesis and suggest genetic factors influencing petaloid stamen formation, providing valuable insights for tree peony breeding and genome evolution studies.*

Biomaterial-based bone grafts are emerged as an effective strategy for the treatment of large bone defects, especially for the scaffolds with enhanced osteogenic and angiogenic bioactivities. However, most studies focused on the direct interactions between scaffolds and bone-related cells such as osteoblasts and endothelial cells, and ignored the effects of material-triggered immunomodulation and the subsequent immune-regulated bone regeneration process. In this study, we developed a silicate bioceramic (SrZnSiO, SZS) scaffold with well-defined pore structures using a three-dimensional (3D) printing technique.

CAS Key Laboratory of Insect Developmental and Evolutionary Biology, CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, University of CAS, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, 200032, China.

Caterpillar oral secretion (OS) contains active molecules that modulate plant defense signaling. We isolated an effector-like protein (Highly Accumulated Secretory Protein 1, HAS1) from cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) that is the most highly accumulated secretory protein of the nondigestive components in OS and belongs to venom R-like protein. Elimination of HAS1 by plant-mediated RNA interference reduced the suppression of OS on the defense response in plants.

Polar auxin transport is unique to plants and coordinates their growth and development. The PIN-FORMED (PIN) auxin transporters exhibit highly asymmetrical localizations at the plasma membrane and drive polar auxin transport; however, their structures and transport mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we report three inward-facing conformation structures of Arabidopsis thaliana PIN1: the apo state, bound to the natural auxin indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and in complex with the polar auxin transport inhibitor N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA).
