Insects and pathogens release effectors into plant cells to weaken the host defense or immune response. While the imports of some bacterial and fungal effectors into plants have been previously characterized, the mechanisms of how caterpillar effectors enter plant cells remain a mystery. Using live cell imaging and real-time protein tracking, we show that HARP1, an effector from the oral secretions of cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera), enters plant cells via protein-mediated endocytosis.

Many eukaryotic receptors and enzymes rely on glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchors for membrane localization and function. The transmembrane complex GPI-T recognizes diverse proproteins at a signal peptide region that lacks consensus sequence and replaces it with GPI via a transamidation reaction. Confined catalysis under the cover of 2D materials has emerged as a promising approach for achieving highly effective catalysts in various essential reactions. In this work, a porous cover structure is designed to boost the interfacial charge and mass transfer kinetics of 2D-covered catalysts. The improvement in catalytic performance is confirmed by the photoelectrochemical oxidation evolution reaction (OER) on a photoanode based on an n-Si substrate modified with a NiO thin-film model electrocatalyst covered with a porous graphene (pGr) monolayer.

Aortic aneurysm and dissection (AAD) are leading causes of death in the elderly. Recent studies have demonstrated that silicate ions can manipulate multiple cells, especially vascular-related cells. We demonstrated in this study that silicate ions as soluble form of bioactive ceramics effectively alleviated aortic aneurysm and dissection in both Ang II and β-BAPN induced AAD models.

Cotton is an irreplaceable economic crop currently domesticated in the human world for its extremely elongated fiber cells specialized in seed epidermis, which makes it of high research and application value. To date, numerous research on cotton has navigated various aspects, from multi-genome assembly, genome editing, mechanism of fiber development, metabolite biosynthesis, and analysis to genetic breeding. Genomic and 3D genomic studies reveal the origin of cotton species and the spatiotemporal asymmetric chromatin structure in fibers.

Microbial communities play a critical role in aquaculture ecosystems. To identify the influence of sediment nutrient levels on microbial communities, sediment and water samples were collected from Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis culture ponds with different nutrient enrichment levels. Relevant physicochemical properties were measured, and 16 S rRNA gene sequencing was applied to identify relevant bacterial communities in the sediments.

Photonic-crystal-like devices and photonic-crystal-like microcavities in graphene are investigated theoretically. The results show that the size of the photonic-crystal-like device and the photonic-crystal-like microcavity is able to be scaled down to more than 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that of the realistic conventional photonic crystal with the same energy, due to the shorter optical-like transport wavelength in graphene. So, the graphene-based photonic-like devices offer a higher degree of integration than their conventional counterparts.

Biomaterial-based bone grafts are emerged as an effective strategy for the treatment of large bone defects, especially for the scaffolds with enhanced osteogenic and angiogenic bioactivities. However, most studies focused on the direct interactions between scaffolds and bone-related cells such as osteoblasts and endothelial cells, and ignored the effects of material-triggered immunomodulation and the subsequent immune-regulated bone regeneration process. Caterpillar oral secretion (OS) contains active molecules that modulate plant defense signaling. We isolated an effector-like protein (Highly Accumulated Secretory Protein 1, HAS1) from cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) that is the most highly accumulated secretory protein of the nondigestive components in OS and belongs to venom R-like protein. Elimination of HAS1 by plant-mediated RNA interference reduced the suppression of OS on the defense response in plants.

The PIN-FORMED (PIN) auxin transporters exhibit highly asymmetrical localizations at the plasma membrane and drive polar auxin transport; however, their structures and transport mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we report three inward-facing conformation structures of Arabidopsis thaliana PIN1: the apo state, bound to the natural auxin indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and in complex with the polar auxin transport inhibitor N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA).
