October 2024

Health, Physical Activity, and Sports Science Laboratory, Department of Physical Activity and Sports, Faculty of Education and Sport, University of Deusto, 48007, Bizkaia, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Citrulline (CIT) and beetroot extract (BR) supplements were studied for their effects on exercise performance and metabolic outcomes in elite rowers, focusing on oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, energy expenditure, and efficiency.
  • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial with 20 elite rowers was conducted, comparing effects after a week of supplementation with placebo, BR, and combined BR-CIT.
  • The results indicated no significant differences in metabolic measurements like energy expenditure and substrate utilization between the groups, suggesting that longer durations or higher doses of supplementation may be needed to see any benefits in metabolic outcomes.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD), reported for the first time in 1906, is a common disease that remains incurable to this day. In the past, a family of treatments using Cu(II) chelators failed during clinical trials, evidencing the importance of pre-clinical studies. In this work, we performed electrochemical characterisation of TDMQ20, a new potential drug against AD, using electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry.

Binder jetting 3D printing is an additive manufacturing technique based on the creation of a part through the selective bonding of powder with an adhesive, followed by a sintering process at high temperature to densify the material and produce parts with acceptable properties. Due to the high initial porosity in the material after sintering, which is typically around 5%, post-sintering treatments are often required to increase the material density and enhance the mechanical and fatigue properties of the final component. This paper focuses on the study of the benefits of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) after sintering on the mechanical and fatigue properties of a binder jetting Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

Omega-3 is a family of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which have been used to treat a wide variety of chronic diseases, due mainly to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, among others. In this context, omega-3 could be post-exercise recovery agent and sports supplement that could improve performance by preserving and promoting skeletal muscle mass and strength. No conclusive evidence, however, exists about the potential effects of omega-3 on post-exercise biomarkers and sports performance in physically healthy adults.
