International expert consensus recommendations for the use of dermocosmetics in acne.

J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol

June 2024

Nantes Université, INSERM, CNRS, Immunology and New Concepts in ImmunoTherapy, INCIT, UMR 1302/EMR6001, Nantes, France.

Background: A wide variety of dermocosmetics (products with both active skincare and cosmetic activity) are available for the management of acne vulgaris. These products are important because they may be the first line of approach for patients desiring to self-treat and they can also have beneficial effects-reducing lesion counts and improving global acne severity. When used in conjunction with medical therapy, dermocosmetics can improve tolerability and enhance results.

Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic in Patients with a Previous Phrenic Nerve Transfer for a Traumatic Brachial Plexus Palsy.

J Brachial Plex Peripher Nerve Inj

January 2024

Division of Reconstructive Microsurgery, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Chang Gung University, Taoyuan, Taiwan.

With the advent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, some doubts have been raised regarding the potential respiratory problems that patients who previously underwent a phrenic nerve transfer could have.  To analyze the effects of the coronavirus infection on two populations, one from Argentina and another from Taiwan. Specific objectives were: (1) to identify the rate of COVID in patients with a history of phrenic nerve transfer for treatment of palsy; (2) to identify the overall symptom profile; (3) to compare Argentinian versus Taiwanese populations; and (4) to determine if any phrenic nerve transfer patients are at particular risk of more severe COVID.

Article Synopsis
  • The left supramarginal gyrus (LSMG) is linked to attention and memory, as shown in a study analyzing 142 verbal recall experiments in epilepsy patients with LSMG electrode implants.
  • A specific subset of 14 patients had notable results when using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to identify recalled words, achieving an area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) between 60-90%.
  • The findings suggest that high-gamma and beta bursts in the LSMG could serve as indicators of verbal memory performance and state, based on distinct neural activity patterns and electrode placements.

Background: Congenital hypopituitarism (CH) and its associated syndromes, septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) and holoprosencephaly (HPE), are midline defects that cause significant morbidity for affected people. Variants in 67 genes are associated with CH, but a vast majority of CH cases lack a genetic diagnosis. Whole exome and whole genome sequencing of CH patients identifies sequence variants in genes known to cause CH, and in new candidate genes, but many of these are variants of uncertain significance (VUS).

An ethologically relevant paradigm to assess defensive response to looming visual contrast stimuli.

Sci Rep

May 2024

Laboratory of Retinal Neurochemistry and Experimental Ophthalmology, School of Science/IQUIBICEN, University of Buenos Aires/CONICET, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In the animal kingdom, threat information is perceived mainly through vision. The subcortical visual pathway plays a critical role in the rapid processing of visual information-induced fear, and triggers a response. Looming-evoked behavior in rodents, mimicking response to aerial predators, allowed identify the neural circuitry underlying instinctive defensive behaviors; however, the influence of disk/background contrast on the looming-induced behavioral response has not been examined, either in rats or mice.

April 2024

Melanoma Unit, Hospital Clinic Barcelona, University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain. CIBER de enfermedades raras, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Barcelona, Spain.

Introduction: Studies focused on dermoscopic aspects of pigmented Bowen disease (pBD) in Latin American population are scarce and limited to only case reports or small series.

Objectives: To report dermoscopic findings in a large series of 147 pBD diagnosed in Ibero-Latin American population.

Methods: We conducted a multicentric, retrospective study on 147 histologically proven pBD under the auspices of the Dermoscopy Chapter of the Ibero-Latin American College of Dermatology.

MUC5AC: A potential biomarker of severity in pediatric patients infected with influenza.

J Med Virol

June 2024

Department of Medicine, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Program, Hospital de Niños Ricardo Gutiérrez, University of Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Numerous factors can increase the risk of severe influenza; however, a majority of severe cases occur in previously healthy children. Identification of high-risk children is important for targeted preventive interventions and prompt treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate MUC5AC as a biomarker for influenza disease severity in children.

Selpercatinib, a selective RET kinase inhibitor, has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in treating patients with advanced medullary (MTC) and differentiated thyroid cancer with RET alterations. Primary resistance to selpercatinib is a very uncommon situation, and its underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We report the case of a 42-year-old female with advanced MTC harboring a somatic M918T RET mutation who exhibited a primary resistance to selpercatinib.

Unidad de Absorción Atómica, Laboratorio de Química y Toxicología Forense, Instituto de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses, Lima, Peru.

Skeletal evidence usually constitutes the only source of information to interpret lesion patterns that help to clarify the circumstances surrounding death. The examination and interpretation of bone trauma are essential to the application and utility of anthropology as a forensic science. When discussing the effect of gunshot wounds in bone, it becomes imperative to differentiate between short and long-distance injuries based on clear, distinct, and observable signs.

Athlete's Personal Values and the Likelihood of Alcohol Use and Heavy Drinking during Adolescence.

Eur J Investig Health Psychol Educ

May 2024

Research Institute, Faculty of Psychology, University of Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires C1052AAA, Argentina.

Sport is considered an exceptional activity for promoting healthy lifestyles, but the relationship between sport and alcohol consumption is inconclusive. Research on personal values may shed light on this issue and thus make it possible to find effective ways to prevent alcohol misuse in adolescents. The main objectives of this study were to explore the relationships between personal values and alcohol consumption amongst adolescent athletes and to validate the Portrait Values Questionnaire-21 (PVQ-21) in this population.

Brain health in diverse settings: How age, demographics and cognition shape brain function.

Electronic address:

Diversity in brain health is influenced by individual differences in demographics and cognition. However, most studies on brain health and diseases have typically controlled for these factors rather than explored their potential to predict brain signals. Here, we assessed the role of individual differences in demographics (age, sex, and education; n = 1298) and cognition (n = 725) as predictors of different metrics usually used in case-control studies.

Aim: Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is usually treated with high doses of paclitaxel, whose effectiveness may be modulated by the action of environmental contaminants such as hexachlorobenzene. High doses of paclitaxel cause adverse effects such as low cellular selectivity and the generation of resistance to treatment due to an increase in the expression of multidrug resistance proteins (MRPs). These effects can be reduced using a metronomic administration scheme with low doses.
