Scholars in medical anthropology note that, despite more than 25 years of anthropological studies on cancer, much of this scholarship remains marginal in mainstream public health approaches. This paper examines social practices, biases, and unnoticed assumptions in mainstream global health research culture that prevents anthropology from having a more influential role in cancer research and policy agendas. It focuses on the day-to-day, ordinary, micro academic practices in which differential power distribution exacerbates inequity within the field, ignoring the role played by approaches with disciplinarian, epistemological and geopolitical peripheries.

Live-attenuated vaccines provide robust immunity against diseases like tuberculosis, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, yellow fever, dengue, typhoid fever, and varicella, with just one or a few doses. However, concerns arise regarding potential pathogen reversion to virulence, which is particularly risky for immunocompromised individuals, contraindicating their administration in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients under modified disease treatments due to the possibility of triggering infections, or stimulating the immune system, precipitating new exacerbations. On the contrary, these vaccines offer enduring immunity that is crucial for protecting MS patients from endemic infectious diseases, leading to severe complications if contracted.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is the medical term for the combination of at least three of the following factors: obesity, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and hypertension. The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is an accepted animal model for the study of human MS that reveals all the features of the syndrome when fed high-fat, high-carbohydrate diets. The intake of high-fat diets in rats has been shown to produce brain neuropathology.

The increase in the global prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), driven mainly by obesity and physical inactivity, has increased interest in various nonpharmacological therapies. This systematic review aims to establish the effectiveness of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and resistance exercise (RE) compared with continuous aerobic exercise in improving control in patients with DM2. We conducted a comprehensive search for clinical trials using databases such as MEDLINE (PubMed) and Web of Science.

Background: Advances in surgical techniques, neuroimaging, and white matter fiber dissection have facilitated the identification of critical tracts like the frontal aslant tract (FAT) that have garnered attention, despite remaining poorly recognized within the neurosurgical community.

Case Description: We report the case of a 37-year-old male right-handed patient presenting with headache and epilepsy, in whom neuroimaging revealed an intra-axial lesion in the left middle frontal gyrus closely associated with FAT. Successful navigation-guided resection of the lesion was achieved, resulting in a favorable neurological outcome attributable to the preservation of the tract.

Feline hypersomatotropism (HST) can develop in both diabetic and non-diabetic cats, but studies evaluating the prevalence of HST in cats without diabetes mellitus (DM) are lacking. The aims of the study were to evaluate circulating insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in non-diabetic cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD), to assess whether there is a correlation between general test of renal function and IGF-1 concentration in cats with CKD, and to screen this population for the presence of HST. In this prospective study, one hundred fifty-four non-diabetic cats (n = 154) with CKD from referral centers in Buenos Aires (Argentina) were evaluated.

Division of Plastic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • * An analysis of over 7,000 breast reduction cases revealed that patients with low albumin levels had significantly more comorbidities, a higher body mass index, and were more likely to be Black or African American.
  • * The study found that those with hypoalbuminemia experienced nearly double the rate of postoperative complications and readmissions compared to those with normal albumin levels, highlighting the importance of preoperative nutritional evaluations.

Wallenberg syndrome, also known as lateral medullary syndrome, is a rare condition affecting the vertebrobasilar circulation, causing symptoms such as vertigo, nystagmus, dysarthria, and hemifacial weakness. Typically linked to ischemic strokes, it can also arise from vertebrobasilar aneurysms. In rare cases, subclavian steal syndrome (SSS), involving retrograde flow in the vertebral artery due to subclavian stenosis, complicates the picture, as observed in this case of a 66-year-old woman with both conditions and a vertebrobasilar aneurysm.

Article Synopsis
  • * Short-acting beta-agonists are the main treatment recommended for managing symptoms, and it's essential for patients, especially children, to avoid triggers that can worsen their condition.
  • * Physicians should regularly evaluate treatment effectiveness, but athletes may need specialized testing to create personalized management plans that balance health and performance.

Introduction: With the implementation of low-dose computed tomography screening, multiple pulmonary tumor nodules are diagnosed with increasing frequency and the selection of surgical treatments versus systemic therapies has become challenging on a daily basis in clinical practice. In the presence of multiple carcinomas, especially adenocarcinomas, pathologically determined to be of pulmonary origin, the distinction between separate primary lung carcinomas (SPLCs) and intrapulmonary metastases (IPMs) is important for staging, management, and prognostication.

Methods: We systemically reviewed various means that aid in the differentiation between SPLCs and IPMs explored by histopathologic evaluation and molecular profiling, the latter includes DNA microsatellite analysis, array comparative genomic hybridization, TP53 and oncogenic driver mutation testing and, more recently, with promising effectiveness, next-generation sequencing comprising small- or large-scale multi-gene panels.

Data-Driven Cutoff Selection for the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Depression Screening Tool.

JAMA Netw Open

November 2024

Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health, McGill University, Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how using small datasets to select an optimal cutoff score for the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) can lead to inaccurate results.
  • Researchers evaluated whether data-driven methods for cutoff selection resulted in scores that were significantly different from the true population optimal score and if these methods produced biased accuracy estimates.
  • Findings showed that many small studies frequently failed to identify the correct optimal cutoff score, particularly in smaller samples, leading to an overestimation of test sensitivity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of a new endoscopic technique (Extended Endoscopic Transodontoid approach, or ETO) for surgeries at the craniovertebral junction, comparing it to the traditional method (transoral-transpharyngeal approach).
  • Results showed that ETO significantly improves surgical exposure and increases the distance that can be resected compared to the traditional approach, with a 52% improvement in resection distance.
  • Predictive lines used to assess the surgical limits were effective in the traditional method but showed limited utility in the newer ETO technique.
