We investigated the capacity of dietary (-)-epicatechin (EC) to mitigate insulin resistance through the modulation of redox-regulated mechanisms in a rat model of metabolic syndrome. Adolescent rats were fed a regular chow diet without or with high fructose (HFr; 10% w/v) in drinking water for 8 weeks, and a group of HFr-fed rats was supplemented with EC in the diet. HFr-fed rats developed insulin resistance, which was mitigated by EC supplementation.

Amyloid precursor protein (APP) shedding yields the Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related peptide amyloid β (Aβ) through β- and γ-secretase cleavage. Alternatively, α-secretase cleavage generates a soluble and neuroprotective fragment (sAPPα) while precludes the production of Aβ. Although metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors were associated with induction of sAPPα production in astrocytes, there was no further evidence regarding the specific subtype receptor or the mechanisms involved in this action.

Acute iron overload and oxidative stress in brain.

An in vivo model in rat was developed by intraperitoneally administration of Fe-dextran to study oxidative stress triggered by Fe-overload in rat brain. Total Fe levels, as well as the labile iron pool (LIP) concentration, in brain from rats subjected to Fe-overload were markedly increased over control values, 6h after Fe administration. In this in vivo Fe overload model, the ascorbyl (A)/ascorbate (AH(-)) ratio, taken as oxidative stress index, was assessed.

The subcellular localization of NO generation in soybean cotyledons, and the relationship between NO synthesis and in vivo chloroplast performance were studied. Employing the NO probe 4-aminomethyl-2',7'-difluorofluorescein diacetate (DAF-FM DA) and fluorescence microscopy, a strongly punctuated fluorescence was detected in mesophyll cells. The co-localization of DAF-FM and chlorophyll fluorescence, in confocal laser microscopy images, indicated the presence of NO in the chloroplasts.

Mitochondrial fusion is essential for steroid biosynthesis.

Although the contribution of mitochondrial dynamics (a balance in fusion/fission events and changes in mitochondria subcellular distribution) to key biological process has been reported, the contribution of changes in mitochondrial fusion to achieve efficient steroid production has never been explored. The mitochondria are central during steroid synthesis and different enzymes are localized between the mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum to produce the final steroid hormone, thus suggesting that mitochondrial fusion might be relevant for this process. In the present study, we showed that the hormonal stimulation triggers mitochondrial fusion into tubular-shaped structures and we demonstrated that mitochondrial fusion does not only correlate-with but also is an essential step of steroid production, being both events depend on PKA activity.

Archaea-based microbial fuel cell operating at high ionic strength conditions.

In this work, two archaea microorganisms (Haloferax volcanii and Natrialba magadii) used as biocatalyst at a microbial fuel cell (MFC) anode were evaluated. Both archaea are able to grow at high salt concentrations. By increasing the media conductivity, the internal resistance was diminished, improving the MFC's performance.

Aim: The aim of this paper was to evaluate the hemodynamic behavior of carotid kinking, as assessed by color Doppler ultrasonography at baseline and during neck movements, and their relation to neurological symptoms.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 60 consecutive patients with non-atheromatous carotid kinking in whom diagnostic color Doppler ultrasonography investigation of neck vessels had been requested for clinical suspicion of atherosclerotic disease were evaluated. To evaluate if there were significant changes of blood velocities as a consequence of kinking, for each carotid artery we recorded systolic and diastolic velocities both in the segments proximal to kinking, as well as intra-kinking.

Aims: Liver preconditioning against ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is a major area of experimental research, in which regulation of gene expression with cytoprotective responses due to transient oxidative stress development has been reported. Considering that significant cytoprotection occurs after exposure to low levels of iron (Fe), we tested the hypothesis that sub-chronic administration of Fe to rats underlying transient oxidative stress preconditions the liver against IR injury.
