Prostaglandin E receptor type 4 (EP4) agonists have been shown to be effective in treating experimental ulcerative colitis (UC) in animals and in human clinical trials, but their development has been impeded by unacceptable systemic side effects. In this study, a series of methylene phosphate prodrugs of a highly potent and selective prostaglandin EP4 receptor agonist were designed to target and remain localized in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract after either oral or rectal instillation. The prodrugs were designed to be converted to liberate active EP4 agonist by intestinal alkaline phosphate (IAP), a ubiquitous enzyme found at the luminal of the intestinal wall thus exposing the colon epithelial barrier while reducing systemic exposure to the active agonist.

Island ecosystems have emerged as vital model systems for evolutionary and speciation studies due to their unique environmental conditions and biodiversity. This study investigates the population divergence, hybridization dynamics, and evolutionary history of hybridizing golden-backed and red-backed flameback woodpeckers on the island of Sri Lanka, providing insights into speciation processes within an island biogeographic context. Utilizing genomic analysis based on next-generation sequencing, we revealed that the hybrid zone on this island is a complex three-way hybrid zone involving three genetically distinct populations: two cryptic populations of golden-backed in the north and one island-endemic red-backed population of in the south of Sri Lanka.

The hippocampus is a heterogenous structure that exhibits functional segregation along its longitudinal axis. We recently showed that in male mice, microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, differ between the dorsal (DH) and ventral (VH) hippocampus, impacting long-term potentiation (LTP) mainly through the CX3CL1-CX3CR1 signaling. Information on long-range dispersal in tropical carnivores is limited compared to their temperate counterparts. Here we present data on long-range, transboundary dispersals for three species of tropical carnivores: African wild dog (), African lion (), and spotted hyena (). The dispersals we document in our savannah system are among the longest that have been recorded for African wild dog and African lion, while for spotted hyena one of our recorded dispersal events is of similar magnitude to the longest documented movements occurring among any carnivore species from around the world.

Pine stem rust, the most damaging and widespread forest disease occurring in pine trees in the Northern Hemisphere, is primarily caused by species (Pucciniales, Melampsorineae). While the phylogenetic relationships of major species have been largely elucidated, there is limited understanding of their species diversity and the evolutionary processes shaping their distribution patterns. In this work, we performed broad sampling and sequencing of taxa in China together with additional sequence data and other accessions in NCBI to investigate the diversification and to estimate the divergence time of major evolutionary events in this genus.
