Classifying habitat patches as sources or sinks and determining metapopulation persistence requires coupling connectivity between habitat patches with local demographic rates. While methods to calculate sources, sinks, and metapopulation persistence exist for discrete-time models, there is no method that is consistent across modeling frameworks. In this paper, we show how next-generation matrices, originally popularized in epidemiology to calculate new infections after one generation, can be used in an ecological context to calculate sources and sinks as well as metapopulation persistence in marine metapopulations.

Background: Since the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the caregiving routine for care partners of people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) changed substantially.
Objectives: To understand the nature and severity of burden in care partners of PwPD during the ongoing pandemic. We also sought to describe care partners' perceived change in burden and factors associated with increased burden.

Background For patients with atrial fibrillation seen in the emergency department (ED) following a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke, the impact of initiating oral anticoagulation immediately rather than deferring the decision to outpatient follow-up is unknown. Methods and Results We conducted a planned secondary data analysis of a prospective cohort of 11 507 adults in 13 Canadian EDs between 2006 and 2018. Patients were eligible if they were aged 18 years or older, with a final diagnosis of TIA or minor stroke with previously documented or newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether olfaction and gustation are impaired in children with PCD.

Western redcedar (WRC; ) is a conifer of the Pacific Northwest of North America prized for its durable and rot-resistant wood. WRC has naturally low outcrossing rates and readily self-fertilizes in nature. Challenges faced in WRC breeding and propagation involve selecting trees for accelerated growth while also ensuring enhanced heartwood rot resistance and resistance to ungulate browsing, as well as mitigating potential effects of inbreeding depression.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of AD SCAs was performed at five tertiary centers across Canada in the provinces of Quebec, Alberta, and Ontario.
Animals ranging from mosquitoes to humans often vary their feeding behavior when infected or merely exposed to pathogens. These so-called "sickness behaviors" are part of the innate immune response with many consequences, including avoiding orally transmitted pathogens. Fully understanding the role of this ubiquitous behavior in host defense and pathogen evolution requires a quantitative account of its impact on host and pathogen fitness across environmentally relevant contexts.

Background Nonvitamin K oral anticoagulants require dose adjustment based on kidney function. The most common estimate of kidney function employed in clinical practice is estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR); however, product monographs recommend the use of the Cockcroft-Gault estimated creatinine clearance (eCrCl) for dose adjustment. Methods and Results The authors included patients enrolled in the ORBIT-AF II (Outcomes Registry for Better Informed Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation AF II) trial.

Early invasive management of ACS is recommended for most high-risk patients; however, choosing between an early invasive versus conservative management approach may be influenced by the unique risk of kidney failure for patients with CKD. Methods and Results This discrete choice experiment measured the preferences of patients with CKD for future cardiovascular events versus acute kidney injury and kidney failure following invasive heart procedures for ACS.

Furthermore, those with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) are not linked to care citing multiple barriers. The objective of this study was to determine the role of our community-based hepatitis B virus (HBV) campaign on HBV screening and the success of linkage to care (LTC) efforts.

The structures of hemicelluloses are determined by carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) that synthesize, integrate, and break down these polymers. Specifically, endo-glucanase 16 (EG16) enzymes, which are related to the well-known () gene products in Glycoside Hydrolase Family 16 (GH16), have been implicated in the degradation of the β(1,4)-linked backbone of mixed-linkage β(1,3);β(1,4)-glucans (MLG) and xyloglucans.

Objective: To risk-stratify COVID-19 patients being considered for discharge from the emergency department (ED).
Methods: We conducted an observational study to derive and validate a clinical decision rule to identify COVID-19 patients at risk for hospital admission or death within 72 hours of ED discharge. We used data from 49 sites in the Canadian COVID-19 Emergency Department Rapid Response Network (CCEDRRN) between March 1, 2020, and September 8, 2021.

Objective: It is hypothesized that patients who are actively provided with more treatment-related education may report increased satisfaction and have improved overall outcomes. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of an audiovisual education platform in patients undergoing head and neck surgery and to investigate whether patients using this module reported increased satisfaction.
Methods: This was a prospective pilot study of patients undergoing major head and neck reconstructive surgery who were randomized to either (1) control group or (2) intervention (i.

We describe an unusual presentation of a suspected pediatric foreign body (FB) aspiration which was found to be an occlusive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the distal trachea. These are rarely reported entities, with the potential for significant airway bleeds. Multidisciplinary discussion and involvement allowed for a safe patient outcome.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Extra-intestinal manifestations such as pulmonary diseases have been reported. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), an inflammatory condition of the sinonasal mucosa, has been associated with several lung diseases.

The pullback pressure gradient (PPG) quantifies CAD patterns as either focal or diffuse based on fractional flow reserve (FFR) pullbacks. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of CAD patterns on acute percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) results considered surrogates of clinical outcomes.

Plants alter soil biological communities, generating ecosystem legacies that affect the performance of successive plants, influencing plant community assembly and successional trajectories. Yet, our understanding of how microbe-mediated soil legacies influence plant establishment is limited for primary successional systems and forest ecosystems, particularly for ectomycorrhizal plants. In a two-phase greenhouse experiment using primary successional mine reclamation materials with or without forest soil additions, we conditioned soil with an early successional shrub with low mycorrhizal dependence (willow, ) and a later-successional ectomycorrhizal conifer (spruce, × ).

Amphipods host diverse endosymbionts, but whether their mtDNA has been influenced by these endosymbionts has yet to be considered. Here, we investigated the role of endosymbionts (microsporidians and ) in explaining highly divergent COI sequences in species complex, the most common freshwater amphipods in New Zealand.

Divergent energy acquisition and processing strategies associated with using different microhabitats may allow phenotypes to specialize and coexist at small spatial scales. To understand how ecological specialization affects differentiation in energy acquisition and processing strategies, we examined relationships among digestive physiology, growth, and energetics by performing captive experiments on juveniles of wild coho salmon () and steelhead trout () that exploit adjacent habitats along natural low-to-high energy flux gradients (i.e.

Background Diagnosis of congenital long-QT syndrome (LQTS) is complicated by phenotypic ambiguity, with a frequent normal-to-borderline resting QT interval. A 3-step algorithm based on exercise response of the corrected QT interval (QTc) was previously developed to diagnose patients with LQTS and predict subtype. This study evaluated the 3-step algorithm in a population that is more representative of the general population with LQTS with milder phenotypes and establishes sex-specific cutoffs beyond the resting QTc.

Unfortunately, existing accredited training programs in this field are rare, and training programs in pediatric metabolic medicine cannot fully meet the needs of AMM physicians as the types of patients and the problems they face are different in the adult setting. We surveyed a group of working practitioners in AMM for input on what medical expert competencies they feel should be included as part of training programs in AMM.
