Background: To maintain standing balance, vestibular cues are processed and integrated with other sensorimotor signals to produce appropriate motor adjustments. Whole-body vestibular-driven postural responses are context-dependent and transformed based upon head and foot posture. Previous reports indicate the importance of intrinsic foot muscles during standing, but it is unclear how vestibular-driven responses of these muscles are modulated by alterations in stability and head posture.

Acute Effect of High-Intensity Interval Exercise on Blood Pressure in Females Living with Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension.

Background: The acute effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on blood pressure (BP) may depend on the exercise protocol performed. Purpose: To compare the acute effect of high and low-volume HIIT on post-exercise and ambulatory BP in untrained older females diagnosed with both type 2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertension (HTN). Methods: Fifteen females (69 [65 ─ 74] years) completed a crossover study with three experimental conditions: 1) REST (35 min in sitting position); 2) HIIT10 (10 × 1 min at 90% heart rate max [HRmax]), and 3) HIIT4 (4 × 4 min at 90% HRmax).

Cerebrovascular regulation is critically dependent upon the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide ( ), owing to its effect on cerebral blood flow, tissue , tissue proton concentration, cerebral metabolism and cognitive and neuronal function. In normal environments and in the absence of pathology, at least over acute time frames, hypercapnia is usually managed readily via the respiratory chemoreflex arcs and/or acid-base buffering capacity, such that there is minimal impact on cerebrovascular and neurological function. However, in non-normal environments, such as enclosed spaces, or with pathology, extended exposures to elevations in can be detrimental to cerebral health.

"It's Just Good Science": A Qualitative Study Exploring Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Canadian Arthritis Research.

Objective: Despite knowledge that health outcomes vary according to patient characteristics, identity, and geography, including underrepresented populations in arthritis research remains a challenge. We conducted interviews to explore how researchers in arthritis have used equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles to inform their research.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals who 1) have experience conducting arthritis research studies; 2) reside in and/or conduct their research in Canada; and 3) speak English or French.

A novel blue-green infrastructure for providing potential drinking water source from urban stormwater through a sustainable physical-biological treatment.

In this research, a sustainable blue-green infrastructure (BGI) was developed to efficiently remove contaminants from stormwater through a combined use of modified porous asphalt (PA) and microalgae cultivation to provide a potential drinking water (DW) source. According to the results, the modified PA with powder activated carbon (PAC) could successfully reduce the level of total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oil and grease to below the DW standards but failed to efficiently remove some heavy metals (HMs) and nutrient pollutants. The results revealed that the treated stormwater was an appropriate medium for microalgae cultivation.

The brain is highly innervated by sympathetic nerve fibres; however, their physiological purpose is poorly understood. We hypothesized that unilateral cerebral norepinephrine (NE) spillover, an index of cerebral sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), would be elevated when engaging the baroreflex [via lower-body negative pressure (LBNP; -20 and -40 Torr)] and respiratory chemoreflexes [via carbon dioxide (CO) administration (+8 Torr)], independently, and in combination. The disruption of the intestinal epithelial barrier leads to increased intestinal permeability (IP), allowing endotoxins and pathogens to enter the bloodstream contributing to chronic inflammation. Western diets are associated with increased IP, while diets rich in polyphenols, fiber, and omega-3 fats are linked to decreased IP. The relationship between diet, disease activity, and IP in ulcerative colitis (UC) is poorly understood.

Social media (SM) groups can connect users to similar others and may be particularly valuable for marginalized populations who lack support in their offline lives. Prior research highlights substantial heterogeneity in users' engagement with and experience in SM groups, which may relate to social and emotional health in important ways. The current study used a cross-sectional survey of users of Facebook groups for multiracial people ( = 424) to identify user profiles and test how profiles relate to depressive symptoms and global sense of belonging.

The Yáláƛi (Goose Island) Archipelago is a group of islands in Heiltsuk (Haíɫzaqv) territory on the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada. Biomass burning organic aerosol (BBOA) is a major contributor to organic aerosol in the atmosphere. The impacts of BBOA on climate and health depend strongly upon their physicochemical properties, including viscosity and phase behavior (number and types of phases); these properties are not yet fully characterized. We collected BBOA field samples during the 2021 British Columbia wildfire season to constrain the viscosity and phase behavior at a range of relative humidities and compared them to previous studies on BBOA.

Strain Partitioning in a Flattening Shear Zone: Re-Evaluation of a Cycladic Style Detachment.

The Almyropotamos tectonic window on southern Evia island in the NW Aegean Sea divides two high pressure-low temperature metamorphic units, representing distinct Hellenic thrust sheets. Ductile thinning along the major low-angle Evia Shear Zone has closely juxtaposed the lower (Basal Unit) marble-flysch sequence structurally below Styra marbles (Cycladic Blueschist Unit). The partially attenuated flysch comprises a matrix dominated by pelitic schist, with dispersed cm- to hm-scale blocks of marble, carbonate schist, quartzite, and metabasite.

Effect of a home-based exercise program on subsequent falls among community-dwelling older adults with cognitive frailty: A sub-group analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

Objectives: Cognitive frailty is characterized by concurrent physical frailty and mild cognitive impairment and is associated with increased risk of falls. Exercise is an evidence-based strategy to prevent falls, but whether exercise reduces falls in people with cognitive frailty is unknown. We examined the effects of home-based exercise on subsequent falls among community-dwelling older adults with cognitive frailty who have previously fallen.
