Helicopter emergency medical services demonstrate reduced time to emergency anaesthesia in an undifferentiated trauma population: a retrospective observational analysis across three major trauma networks.

Background: Early rapid sequence induction of anaesthesia (RSI) and tracheal intubation for patients with airway or ventilatory compromise following major trauma is recommended, with guidance suggesting a 45-min timeframe. Whilst on-scene RSI is recommended, the potential time benefit offered by Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) has not been studied. We compared the time from 999/112 emergency call to delivery of RSI between patients intubated either in the Emergency Department or pre-hospital by HEMS.

Self-monitoring of blood pressure following a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TASMIN5S): a randomised controlled trial.

Background: Blood pressure (BP) control following stroke is important but currently sub-optimal. This trial aimed to determine whether self-monitoring of hypertension with telemonitoring and a treatment escalation protocol, results in lower BP than usual care in people with previous stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA).

Inspired by the navigational prowess of social insects, a family of insect-inspired route navigation algorithms-familiarity-based algorithms-have been developed that use stored panoramic images collected during a training route to subsequently derive directional information during route recapitulation. Genotype-Guided Asthma Treatment Reduces Exacerbations in Children: Meta-Analysis of Two RCTs.

Background: Long-acting beta2-agonists (LABA) in combination with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are commonly used to treat asthma, however, some children lack response to the addition of LABA. This might be partially due to the presence of the Arg16Gly polymorphism, encoded by rs1042713 G>A in the ADRB2 gene. Carrying the A allele (Arg16) at this variant has been associated with an increased risk of exacerbations despite LABA treatment.

Educator-To-Student Sexual Harassment in UK and Irish Secondary Schools: A Qualitative Analysis.

The current study examines the way sexual harassment, a specific facet of educator sexual misconduct, is experienced by secondary school students. The qualitative component of an online survey was completed by participants aged 18+ who had attended secondary school in Ireland ( = 85) or the UK ( = 74), and who were recruited to participate via social media. Participants were asked to describe the incident of educator-student sexual harassment they experienced that had the greatest effect on them.

Detectable use of ENSO information on crop production in Southern Africa.

People have known that El Niño events are associated with low rainfall in Southern Africa for a century, and seasonal rainfall forecasts are now available in agricultural advisories for farmers. While there is abundant theory as to how farmers might (or should) use seasonal rainfall information on their farms, little is known about whether this information has been widely used or has had widespread benefit. In this study, we use subnational data on cropping area and yield to see if we can detect any macro-level patterns in agricultural choices or outcomes that are related to knowledge of the El Niño Southern Oscillation or seasonal forecast information in Southern Africa.

Long-Term Effects of Neurofeedback and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on Traumatic Brain Injury: A Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-Based Secondary Analysis.

Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) poses significant public health challenges, but treatments like neurofeedback and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) show promise in aiding recovery. Neurofeedback enhances brain healing through operant conditioning, while HBOT increases cerebral oxygenation, supporting cognitive recovery. A 33-year-old woman, after suffering a severe TBI in 2018 and a long rehabilitation, began HBOT and neurofeedback in late 2021.

Epidemiological Characteristics and Outcome of Myocarditis and Pericarditis Temporally Associated With BNT162b2 COVID-19 Vaccine in Adolescents: Korean National Surveillance.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and outcomes of myocarditis/pericarditis after BNT162b2 vaccination in Korean adolescents.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort analysis of adolescents aged 12-19 years old diagnosed with myocarditis/pericarditis within 42 days of BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination. All reported cases were investigated by city or government epidemiologists and the diagnostic certainty and causality was determined by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Adverse Event Following Immunization Expert Advisory Committee according to the modified version of Brighton Collaboration Myocarditis/Pericarditis Working group's case definitions.

Experiences of recovery and rehabilitation from surgery to treat neurogenic claudication. A qualitative study.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the experiences, expectations, attitudes and beliefs about surgery and recovery in people with neurogenic claudication, and their preferences for rehabilitation.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 16 patients (8 female; mean age 70 years) following surgery for neurogenic claudication. Data were transcribed verbatim, analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and interpreted using the five constructs of the Integrative Model of Expectations: treatment, timeline, behaviour, outcome, and generalised expectations.

SSSort 2.0: A semi-automated spike detection and sorting system for single sensillum recordings.

Background: Single-sensillum recordings are a valuable tool for sensory research which, by their nature, access extra-cellular signals typically reflecting the combined activity of several co-housed sensory neurons. However, isolating the contribution of an individual neuron through spike-sorting has remained a major challenge due to firing rate-dependent changes in spike shape and the overlap of co-occurring spikes from several neurons. Methods: People with HIV who were part of the Pharmacokinetic and clinical Observations in PeoPle over fiftY (POPPY) study (2013-2016) were included.

The microbiome and the eye: a new era in ophthalmology.

The human microbiome has progressively been recognised for its role in various disease processes. In ophthalmology, complex interactions between the gut and distinct ocular microbiota within each structure and microenvironment of the eye has advanced our knowledge on the multi-directional relationships of these ecosystems. Increasingly, studies have shown that modulation of the microbiome can be achieved through faecal microbiota transplantation and synbiotics producing favourable outcomes for ophthalmic diseases.

A service evaluation of the implementation of a novel digital intervention for hypertension self-monitoring and management system in primary care (SHIP): protocol for a mixed methods study.

Background: Hypertension is a key risk factor for death and disability, and blood pressure reduction is associated with significant reductions in cardiovascular risk. Large trials have shown that interventions including self-monitoring of blood pressure can reduce blood pressure but real-world data from wider implementation are lacking.

Aim: The self-monitoring and management service evaluation in primary care (SHIP) study will evaluate a novel digital intervention for hypertension management and medication titration platform ("Hypertension-Plus") that is currently undergoing initial implementation into primary care in several parts of the UK.

Functional Outcomes of the Management of Acromioclavicular Joint Dislocation With a Clavicle Hook Plate: A Retrospective Study.

Background: Dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ), accounting for 9%-12% of all shoulder injuries, is a frequent shoulder problem. Clavicular hook plates have proven to be a successful implant choice for surgical management. The benefit of this method is that it preserves the diarthrosis of the ACJ while reducing dislocation.

Predictive properties of novel anthropometric and biochemical indexes for prediction of cardiovascular risk.

Objective: Our aim was to examine the correlation between CVDs and various anthropometric and biochemical indices in the Iranian population.

Methods: 9704 healthy individuals without CVD aged 35-65 were enrolled in our study. The anthropometric indices including Body Adiposity Index (BAI), Abdominal Volume Index (AVI), Body Roundness Index (BRI), Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR), Weight-adjusted Waist Index (WWI), Conicity Index (C-Index), A Body Shape Index (ABSI), Waist to Height Ratio (WHtR), Body Surface Area (BSA), Body Mass Index (BMI), Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP) and Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) were calculated.
