Variation in brain structure volumes in schizophrenia: A commentary.

Neurosci Biobehav Rev

October 2019

University of Brescia School of Medicine, Department of Mental Health, Spedali Civili Hospital, Brescia, Italy. Electronic address:

Recently, Kuo and Pogue-Geile (2019) quantitatively reviewed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) findings in patients with schizophrenia demonstrating, besides altered volume of several brain structures significantly greater structural variability in patients relative to controls as for intracranial, lateral and third ventricles volumes. We believe that additional points could be usefully included in the discussion of the conceptual meaning of these findings. In this commentary, first we highlight the role of potential confounding factors such as antipsychotic medication intake and duration of illness when interpreting MRI data in schizophrenia.

Epstein-Barr virus positive (EBV) smooth muscle tumors (SMTs) constitute a very rare oncological entity. They usually develop in the context of secondary immunodeficiency caused by human immunodeficiency virus infection or immunosuppressive treatment after solid organ transplantation. However, in a small fraction of predominantly pediatric patients, EBV SMTs may occur in patients with primary immunodeficiency disorders (PIDs), such as GATA2 and CARMIL2 deficiency.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess immediate and midterm outcomes for urgent/emergent and elective patients with thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs) treated with the first commercially available "off-the-shelf" multibranched endograft for endovascular aneurysm repair, with a single-step or a staged surgical approach.

Methods: A multicenter, nonrandomized, retrospective study was conducted of TAAA patients grouped by urgent/emergent and elective treatment with multibranched endograft for endovascular aneurysm repair at 13 Italian centers from November 2012 to August 2016. Urgent/emergent repair was classified as rupture in 16%, impending rupture in 9%, pain in 53%, or a maximum TAAA diameter ≥80 mm in 22%.

Somatic mutations activating MAPK and PI3K signalling play a pivotal role in both tumours and brain developmental disorders. We developed a zebrafish model of brain tumours based on somatic expression of oncogenes that activate MAPK and PI3K signalling in neural progenitor cells and found that HRAS was the most effective in inducing both heterotopia and invasive tumours. Tumours, but not heterotopias, require persistent activation of phospho (p)-ERK and express a gene signature similar to the mesenchymal glioblastoma subtype, with a strong YAP component.

Operative Treatment of Type 2 Endoleaks Involving the Inferior Mesenteric Artery.

Ann Vasc Surg

February 2017

Vascular Surgery, Department of Surgery and Morphological Sciences, Circolo University Teaching Hospital, University of Insubria School of Medicine, Varese, Italy.

Background: We report the results of the operative treatment for type 2 endoleak (T2E) involving the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) using the transarterial embolization (TAE) or the video laparoscopic ligation (VLS).

Methods: Between January 2005 and December 2015, we retrospectively analyzed 901 patients treated with endovascular aortic repair (EVAR): 883 (98%) had 1 valid postoperative radiologic evaluation, at least. All patients with operative repair for IMA-related T2E entered the final analysis.

Intestinal microbiota sustains inflammation and autoimmunity induced by hypomorphic RAG defects.

J Exp Med

March 2016

Milan Unit, Istituto di Ricerca Genetica e Biomedica, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, 20133 Milan, Italy Humanitas Clinical and Research Center, Rozzano, 20089 Milan, Italy

Omenn syndrome (OS) is caused by hypomorphic Rag mutations and characterized by a profound immunodeficiency associated with autoimmune-like manifestations. Both in humans and mice, OS is mediated by oligoclonal activated T and B cells. The role of microbial signals in disease pathogenesis is debated.

We previously reported that STAT1 expression is frequently abrogated in human estrogen receptor-α-positive (ERα(+)) breast cancers and mice lacking STAT1 spontaneously develop ERα(+) mammary tumors. However, the precise mechanism by which STAT1 suppresses mammary gland tumorigenesis has not been fully elucidated. Here we show that STAT1-deficient mammary epithelial cells (MECs) display persistent prolactin receptor (PrlR) signaling, resulting in activation of JAK2, STAT3 and STAT5A/5B, expansion of CD61(+) luminal progenitor cells and development of ERα(+) mammary tumors.
