Background: This study aims to characterize right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) in heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction and understand the cumulative prognostic value of abnormal RV echocardiographic parameters in HF with preserved ejection fraction.

Methods And Results: Data from 809 patients in the PARAGON-HF (Prospective Comparison of Angiotensin Receptor-Neprilysin Inhibitor With Angiotensin-Receptor Blocker Global Outcomes in HF With Preserved Ejection Fraction) echocardiographic substudy (55% women, mean age 74±8 years) were analyzed. Correlates of RVD (defined as tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion <1.

Background: Despite longstanding epidemiologic data on the association between increased serum triglycerides and cardiovascular events, the exact level at which risk begins to rise is unclear. The Working Group on Uric Acid and Cardiovascular Risk of the Italian Society of Hypertension has conceived a protocol aimed at searching for the prognostic cutoff value of triglycerides in predicting cardiovascular events in a large regional-based Italian cohort.

Methods And Results: Among 14 189 subjects aged 18 to 95 years followed-up for 11.

Objective: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the clinical phenotypes associated with 4 SMN2 copies.

Methods: Clinical phenotypes were analyzed in all the patients with 4 SMN2 copies as part of a nationwide effort including all the Italian pediatric and adult reference centers for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

Results: The cohort includes 169 patients (102 men and 67 women) with confirmed 4 SMN2 copies (mean age at last follow-up = 36.

Background In heart failure, the exercise gas exchange Weber (A to D) and ventilatory classifications (VC-1 to VC-4) historically define disease severity and prognosis. However, their applications in the modern heart failure population of any left ventricular ejection fraction combined with hemodynamics are undefined. We aimed at revisiting and implementing these classifications by cardiopulmonary exercise testing imaging.

Objectives: to describe the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on undetected cases and to evaluate different post-lockdown scenarios.

Design: the study introduces a SEIR compartmental model, taking into account the region-specific fraction of undetected cases, the effects of mobility restrictions, and the personal protective measures adopted, such as wearing a mask and washing hands frequently.

Setting And Participants: the model is experimentally validated with data of all the Italian regions, some European countries, and the US.

European dermatology forum - updated guidelines on the use of extracorporeal photopheresis 2020 - part 1.

J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol

December 2020

Division of Haematology, LKH-Univ. Klinikum Graz, Medical University of Graz, Graz, Austria.

Background: Following the first investigational study on the use of extracorporeal photopheresis for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma published in 1983, this technology has received continued use and further recognition for additional earlier as well as refractory forms. After the publication of the first guidelines for this technology in the JEADV in 2014, this technology has maintained additional promise in the treatment of other severe and refractory conditions in a multi-disciplinary setting. It has confirmed recognition in well-known documented conditions such as graft-versus-host disease after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, systemic sclerosis, solid organ transplant rejection including lung, heart and liver and to a lesser extent inflammatory bowel disease.

Aim: To evaluate the long-term prognostic significance of right ventricular (RV) deformation and RV-arterial coupling in a cohort of patients with heart failure (HF) due to severe aortic stenosis (AS) candidate for trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).

Methods: The study is a retrospective analysis of 56 patients undergoing echocardiography before TAVI execution. RV function was defined by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), fractional area change (FAC), peak systolic myocardial velocity by tissue Doppler imaging (RVSm) and RV longitudinal strain (RVLS).

The change from a consolidated manufacturing practice to a new solution is often a complex problem because of the operative limits of technologies and the strict constraints of industrial parts. Moreover, the new process must reflect or enhance the characteristics of the product and, overall, it must be more competitive in performances and costs. Accordingly, the development of a new process is a multilevel and multivariate problem that requires a systematic and hierarchical approach.

Oligometastatic prostate cancer comprises a wide spectrum of conditions, ranging from de novo oligometastatic cancer at diagnosis to oligometastatic castration-resistant disease, which are distinct entities in terms of biology and prognosis. In order to clarify and standardize the clinical role of ablative radiotherapy in oligometastatic prostate cancer, the Italian Association of Radiotherapy and Clinical Oncology (AIRO) formed an expert panel to review the current literature and develop a formal consensus. Oligometastatic prostate cancer was defined as the presence of up to three metastatic lesions involving bones or nodes outside pelvis.

Background In patients with acute ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation, early anticoagulation prevents ischemic recurrence but with the risk of hemorrhagic transformation ( HT ). The aims of this study were to evaluate in consecutive patients with acute stroke and atrial fibrillation (1) the incidence of early HT, (2) the time to initiation of anticoagulation in patients with HT , (3) the association of HT with ischemic recurrences, and (4) the association of HT with clinical outcome at 90 days. Methods and Results HT was diagnosed by a second brain computed tomographic scan performed 24 to 72 hours after stroke onset.

On the fragility of fractional-order PID controllers for FOPDT processes.

ISA Trans

January 2016

Dipartimento di Ingegneria Meccanica e Industriale, University of Brescia - Italy, Via Branze 38, I-25123 Brescia, Italy. Electronic address:

This paper analyzes the fragility issue of fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative controllers applied to integer first-order plus-dead-time processes. In particular, the effects of the variations of the controller parameters on the achieved control system robustness and performance are investigated. Results show that this kind of controllers is more fragile with respect to the standard proportional-integral-derivative controllers and therefore a significant attention should be paid by the user in their tuning.
