Objective: Brainstem cavernous malformations (BSCMs) were once considered inoperable. Microsurgical resection now represents a valuable option for treating patients with hemorrhagic or symptomatic lesions. The aim of this study was to provide a practical guide for surgical planning by analyzing postoperative neurological and functional outcomes.

Unmasking inborn errors of immunity: identifying the red flags of immune dysregulation.

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are rare diseases that affect the immune system. According to the latest International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) classification, 485 different IEI have been identified. Even if increased susceptibility to infections is the best-known symptom, IEI are no longer defined by the higher likelihood of infections alone.

The aim of this study is to perform a comparative analysis of Italian and Spanish regulations for construction and demolition (C&D) waste management, to produce recycled aggregates (RAs). Furthermore, this study seeks to compare the results derived from the examination of leaching test results from RAs collected in both countries to identify the most critical pollutants. Our research involved a comprehensive comparison and analysis of waste management regulations in Italy and Spain, highlighting both commonalities and disparities.

International multicenter validation of AI-driven ultrasound detection of ovarian cancer.

Ovarian lesions are common and often incidentally detected. A critical shortage of expert ultrasound examiners has raised concerns of unnecessary interventions and delayed cancer diagnoses. Deep learning has shown promising results in the detection of ovarian cancer in ultrasound images; however, external validation is lacking.

Semiquantitative 2-[F]FDG PET/CT-based parameters role in lymphoma.

2-deoxy-2-[F]-fluoro-D-glucose (2-[F]FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) plays a crucial role in the management of lymphoma in different settings, such as staging disease, assessing response to therapy, predicting prognosis, and planning RT. Beside visual analysis, several semiquantitative parameters were introduced to study lymphoma with promising results. These parameters can represent different disease characteristics, like body composition (such as sarcopenic index), dissemination of disease (Dmax), tumor burden (including metabolic tumor volume) and texture features.

Pregnancy is a unique phase in a woman's life marked by profound physical transformations, including changes in body shape and weight. The Body Understanding Measure for Pregnancy Scale (BUMPs) was designed to assess body image during pregnancy. Despite its increasing use, the scale has not yet been adapted into Italian, and evidence regarding its predictive validity with respect to anxiety, depression, and body appreciation is lacking.

The Keystone Design Perforator Flap: A Flap to Simplify Complex Reconstructive Issues.

 The keystone design perforator island flap (KDPIF) was first described by Behan in 2003 as a pliable flap, suitable for all body areas thanks to its curvilinear shape, which made it apt to fit mostly all cutaneous defects.  In this article, we aim to share our experience using KDPIF for the reconstruction of different defects. A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent cutaneous excision after trauma or tumor resection and reconstruction with a KDPIF at our department from 2020 to 2023 was performed.

The use of an imageless robotic system in revision of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty.

Purpose: The application of robotics in revision arthroplasty particularly from unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) to total knee arthroplasty (TKA), is underexplored. The purpose of this study is to describe the surgical technique of an imageless robotic system used in the revision of UKA to TKA and to evaluate short- to mid-term outcomes.

Methods: This prospective study includes 35 patients treated from May 2020 to July 2023.

Integrated assessment of water footprint in nonirrigated vineyards.

The topic of sustainable water management has become of paramount importance at a global level, especially when considering the high-amount of water used in agriculture, which is a threat to water resource balance. Focused on 38 inventories of nonirrigated vineyard management in the Franciacorta wine-growing region in Italy, this study aims to understand how agronomic practices impact water resources. The integrated statistical approach, based on generalized linear models, reveals how context variables influence different water footprint indicators, such as water scarcity, acidification and freshwater ecotoxicity.

AI-driven identification of a novel malate structure from recycled lithium-ion batteries.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the discovery of new materials offers significant potential for advancing sustainable technologies. This paper presents a novel approach leveraging AI-driven methodologies to identify a new malate structure derived from the treatment of spent lithium-ion batteries. By analysing bibliographic data and incorporating domain-specific knowledge, AI facilitated the identification and structure refinement of a new malate complex containing different metals (Ni, Mn, Co, and Cu).

Complete versus culprit-lesion-only percutaneous coronary intervention after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in patients with multivessel disease.

Background: Multivessel coronary artery disease (MVD) represents a common finding at invasive coronary angiography (ICA) among out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors. However, optimal invasive treatment strategy for MVD in OHCA remains unknown. Our study aims to assess if complete revascularization improves one-year clinical outcomes in these patients.

Background: Robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is widely used as the main surgical approach to treat prostate cancer in the United States. Prostate size is often described as a factor affecting the outcomes of RARP as shown by many studies. However, these studies are limited to a small number of patients.

Dynamics of affect modulation in neurodevelopmental disorders (DynAMoND) - study design of a prospective cohort study.

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuro-developmental disorder that often persists into adulthood. Moreover, it is frequently accompanied by bipolar disorder (BD) as well as borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is unclear whether these disorders share underlying pathomechanisms, given that all three are characterized by alterations in affective states, either long or short-term.

Plasma phosphorylated tau and neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia with Lewy bodies.

Introduction: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) are common in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) but their neurobiological mechanisms are poorly understood.

Methods: NPSs and cognition were assessed annually in participants (DLB n = 222; Alzheimer's disease [AD] n = 125) from the European DLB (E-DLB) Consortium, and plasma phosphorylated tau-181 (p-tau181) and p-tau231 concentrations were measured at baseline.

Results: Hallucinations, delusions, and depression were more common in DLB than in AD and, in a subgroup with longitudinal follow-up, persistent hallucinations and NPSs were associated with lower p-tau181 and p-tau231 in DLB.

Mid-term outcomes after primary total hip arthroplasty with a cemented short stem in an elderly patient cohort.

Purpose: The main objective of this prospective study was to assess clinical, radiographic and safety mid-term outcomes after THA with a short cemented stem in an elderly patient cohort. Moreover, the study aimed at investigating the mid-term survivorship of the implant and the incidence of complications.

Methods: 96 consecutive patients (100 cases) underwent THA with a short cemented stem.

Schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar (BD) and major depression disorder (MDD) are severe psychiatric disorders that are challenging to treat, often leading to treatment resistance (TR). It is crucial to develop effective methods to identify and treat patients at risk of TR at an early stage in a personalized manner, considering their biological basis, their clinical and psychosocial characteristics. Effective translation of theoretical knowledge into clinical practice is essential for achieving this goal.

Metal-backed versus all-poly tibia in the original cartier unicompartmental knee arthroplasty: outcomes and survivorship at long-term follow-up.

Purpose: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is a viable option for localized osteoarthritis (OA) or avascular osteonecrosis with several advantages over total knee arthroplasty (TKA). UKA implants may feature a tibial component either all-polyethylene (AP) or metal-backed (MB). This study aims to retrospectively compare the clinical outcomes and survivorship of 74 UKAs over 16 years, focusing on comparing the results and survivorship of MB versus AP tibial tray.

AIHEMAF-P: An Innovative Healthcare Model for Atrial Fibrillation Patients.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias of clinical relevance and a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Following a diagnosis of AF, patients are directed towards therapy with anticoagulant drugs to reduce the thromboembolic risk and antiarrhythmics to control their cardiac rhythm, with periodic follow-up checks. Despite the great ease of handling these drugs, we soon realized the need for follow-up models that would allow the appropriateness and safety of these pharmacological treatments to be monitored over time.

The Role of 11C-Methionine PET Imaging for the Evaluation of Lymphomas: A Systematic Review.

: In the last years, different evidence has underlined a possible role for [11C]-methionine ([11C]MET) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging for the evaluation of lymphomas. The aim of this paper was, therefore, to review the available scientific literature focusing on this topic. : A wide literature search of the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Cochrane Library databases was conducted in order to find relevant published articles investigating the role of [11C]MET in the assessment of lymphomas.

Two-fold increased risk of cardiovascular events in people with MDR HIV: a matched cohort analysis with data from the PRESTIGIO registry.

Background: Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) may contribute to the high morbidity in people with four-class drug-resistant HIV (4DR-PWH).

Objectives: To explore the probability of MACEs in 4DR-PWH compared with non-4DR controls.

Methods: This was a retrospective, propensity score-matched cohort study on 4DR-PWH (cases) and non-4DR-PWH (controls), on ART, without previous MACEs.
