Cyanobacteria, often overlooked in traditional agriculture, are gaining recognition for their roles in enhancing plant growth and soil health through diverse mechanisms. This review examines their multifaceted contributions to agricultural systems, highlighting their proficiency in auxin production, which promotes plant growth and development. Additionally, we examined cyanobacteria's ability to produce siderophores that enhance iron absorption and address micronutrient deficiencies, as well as their capacity for nitrogen fixation, which converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can utilize, all with the goal of reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

A novel sanitizer tablet containing clove essential oil (CO) microemulsion was developed. A preformulation study using nuclear magnetic resonance and thermal analyses showed component compatibility. The main components of the samples remained intact despite a color change, probably due to a strong acid-base interaction between eugenol and diethanolamine.

Objectives: Evaluating the impact of patient involvement in health technology assessments (HTA) may help improve practices and avoid ineffective activities. Evaluation, however, continues to be infrequent, inconsistent, and often only relates to process quantity or quality. The Patient and Citizen Involvement in HTA Interest Group (PCIG) within Health Technology Assessment International set out to contextualize this impact to support evaluation.

Recent approaches of regenerative reproductive medicine investigate the decellularized extracellular matrix to develop a transplantable engineered ovary (TEO). However, a full proteomic analysis is not usually performed after the decellularization process to evaluate the preservation of the extracellular matrix (ECM). In this study, the ECM of the bovine ovarian cortex was analyzed before and after decellularization using mass spectrometry and bioinformatics.

Article Synopsis
  • * It focuses on organic contaminants introduced by common materials used in evidence collection and sample processing, such as plastic films and disposable gloves, which can affect results from gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
  • * Findings indicate that certain materials, especially syringe plungers and gloves, can interfere with detecting explosive residues, stressing the need to evaluate materials for contamination risks before sample analysis.

Fertility after pouch surgery in women with ulcerative colitis: Is robotic surgery the key to better outcomes?

Womens Health (Lond)

November 2024

Medical Sciences Postgraduate Program, School of Medicine, University of Brasilia, Federal District, Brasilia, Brazil.

Fertility preservation is a major concern for women with ulcerative colitis who require surgical treatment. Previous studies have shown that the risk of infertility after restorative proctocolectomy is approximately four times higher. However, this risk appears to be lower in patients who undergo minimally invasive approaches, such as laparoscopic surgery.

Drug dispensing in public community pharmacies: evidence from the MedMinas project.

BMC Health Serv Res

November 2024

Laboratory of Evidence and Pharmaceutical Studies (LEFAR), Department of Pharmacy. Health Sciences Faculty, University of Brasília. Federal District, Brasília, Brazil.

Background: Drug dispensing is a service provided by pharmacists to ensure the supply of medications and other health-related products. However, despite the importance of dispensing services, Public Community Pharmacies (PCP) in Brazil still focus on the control and distribution of medicines and supplies. Thus, this paper aims to evaluate how the pharmacists in charge conduct and the challenges they encounter in dispensing services in PCP.

Hair follicles (HFs) represent a route of interest to drug delivery for treating several skin conditions. Iontophoresis, on the other hand, is a physical method to enhance drug permeation by applying a low electrical current to the formulation. HFs can be targeted following topical iontophoretic application, as they represent a pathway of lower electrical resistance, as well as a drug reservoir, in particular useful for nanoparticles (NPs), which can preferably accumulate in these structures.

  • The paper explores the use of Deep Learning (DL) techniques to classify gunshot wounds in a forensic context, focusing on differentiating between entry and exit wounds and identifying the Medical-Legal Shooting Distance (MLSD) based on crime scene images.
  • A database of 2,551 images was created, and the ResNet152 architecture outperformed others in classifying gunshot wounds, achieving high accuracy rates of 86.90% for wound classification and 92.48% for MLSD.
  • The study highlights the challenges of standardizing forensic images due to varying conditions but emphasizes the potential of DL as a useful tool to support forensic investigations and enhance pathology practices.

January 2025

Pôle de Recherche en Physiopathologie de la Reproduction, Institut de Recherche Expérimentale et Clinique, Université Catholique de Louvain, Brussels, Belgium. Electronic address:

For cancer patients with a high risk of ovarian tissue metastasis, ovarian autotransplantation is not advised due to the potential spread of malignant cells. Ex vivo purging of ovarian fragments may offer a more suitable alternative for fertility restoration. Eradicating malignant cells should be done selectively without affecting follicles or ovarian stromal cells (SCs).
