This study aimed to validate the association between the grades of severity of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) identified by the fast-tack model and specific outcomes. Three hundred and sixty-seven patients with new DFUs who were referred to a tertiary level diabetic foot service serving Rome, Italy, were included. The fast-track model identifies three levels of DFUs' severity: uncomplicated DFUs, including superficial wounds, not-infected wounds, and not-ischemic wounds; complicated DFUs, including ischemic wounds, infected wounds, and deep ulcers involving the muscles, tendons, or bones, and any kind of ulcers in patients on dialysis and/or with heart failure; and severely complicated DFUs, including abscesses, wet gangrene, necrotizing fasciitis, fever, or clinical signs of sepsis.

Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare imprinting disorder characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth retardation. The two principal causes of SRS are loss of methylation on chromosome 11p15 (11p15 LOM) and maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7 (UPD(7)mat). Knowledge of the neuropsychological profile of SRS remains sparse and incomplete even if several difficulties related to attention and learning have been reported both in the literature and by patients with SRS.

Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs), enzymes catalyzing the methylation of target proteins, play an essential role in maintaining functional homeostasis in normal physiology. Aberrant expressions and enhanced enzymatic activities of PRMTs have been closely associated with pathological states such as cancer, inflammatory, immune, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, the development of inhibitors targeting PRMTs has attracted a great deal of attention in both pharmaceutical industries and academic community.

Clin Microbiol Infect

April 2023

Sorbonne Université, Hôpital Saint Antoine, Service d'Accueil des Urgences, INSERM, Institut Pierre Louis d'Epidémiologie et de Santé Publique, Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare the outcomes of patients infected with Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 who were treated with either sotrovimab or nirmatrelvir to prevent severe COVID-19.
  • - Of the 255 patients analyzed, nirmatrelvir resulted in faster negative PCR conversion (4 days) compared to sotrovimab (11.5 days), and a lower hospitalization rate was observed in nirmatrelvir-treated patients.
  • - The findings suggest that nirmatrelvir may lead to quicker viral clearance than sotrovimab in high-risk patients, potentially reducing the spread of the virus.

University of Bourgogne Franche-Comté, UMR UFC CNRS 6249 Chrono-Environnement, 16 route de Gray 25000 Besançon, 4 Place Tharradin, 25200 Montbéliard, France; Federal University of Paraiba, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, João Pessoa 58051-900, Brazil.

Seawater intrusion is among the world's leading causes of groundwater contamination, as salty water can affect potable water access, food production, and ecosystem functions. To explore such contamination sources, multivariate analysis supported by unsupervised learning tools has been used for decades to aid in water resource pattern recognition, clustering, and water quality data variability characterization. This study proposes a systematic review of these techniques applied for supporting seawater intrusion identification based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement and subsequent bibliometric analysis of 102 coastal hydrogeological studies.

Group VII ethylene response factors (ERF-VII) are plant-specific transcription factors (TFs) known for their role in the activation of hypoxia-responsive genes under low oxygen stress but also in plant endogenous hypoxic niches. However, their function in the microaerophilic nitrogen-fixing nodules of legumes has not yet been investigated. We investigated regulation and the function of the two Medicago truncatula ERF-VII TFs (MtERF74 and MtERF75) in roots and nodules, MtERF74 and MtERF75 in response to hypoxia stress and during the nodulation process using an RNA interference strategy and targeted proteolysis of MtERF75.

Apolipoprotein C1 (apoC1) is a small size apolipoprotein whose exact role is not totally clarified but which seems to modulate significantly the metabolism of lipoproteins. ApoC1 is involved in the metabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins by inhibiting the binding of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) to VLDL-receptor (VLDL-R), to low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) and to LDL receptor related protein (LRP), by reducing the activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and by stimulating VLDL production, all these effects leading to increase plasma triglycerides. ApoC1 takes also part in the metabolism of high density lipoproteins (HDL) by inhibiting Cholesterol Ester Transfer Protein (CETP).

Linseed oil-based composite films were prepared with cinnamaldehyde (Cin) using a modified clay (organoclay) through in situ polymerization, which is the result of the interaction between Cin and organoclay. The incorporation of organoclay reduces the polymer chain's mobility and, therefore, increases the thermal stability of the composite films. In some experimental conditions, the clay is located both inside and on the surface of the film, thus, affecting the mechanical and thermal properties as well as the surface properties of the composite films.
