Understanding the Scale and Nature of Parent/Guardian Telephone Calls to a Tertiary Children's Cardiac Centre: A Service Evaluation.

Heart defects are the second most common congenital anomaly in babies born in the UK and standards state families should have access to a children's cardiac nurse specialist telephone advice service. However, there is little published information to describe the nature of calls and the workload associated with telephone support. We conducted a prospective service evaluation of telephone calls received at one UK specialist children's cardiac surgical center from parents/carers (April-June 2019).

Induction of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in Periodontitis Rat Model.

Objectives:  Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process that shifts cellular phenotype. It is linked to several different inflammatory diseases including periodontitis. This study was conducted to investigate the involvement of the EMT process in an experimental periodontitis (EP) model.

A Cross-Sectional Evaluation of Opioid Dispensing Competencies in Final-Year Pharm-D Students: A Multicenter Study from Punjab, Pakistan.

Background: The opioid crisis continues to be a public health concern worldwide due to the high rates of misuse and associated mortality. Opioid dispensing competencies are critical for pharmacy graduates to promote the rational use of opioids.

Purpose: To evaluate the opioids dispensing competencies among the final year Pharm-D students in Punjab, Pakistan.

Estimating relative risks and risk differences in randomised controlled trials: a systematic review of current practice.

Background: Guidelines for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) recommend reporting relative and absolute measures of effect for binary outcomes while adjusting for covariates. There are a number of different ways covariate-adjusted relative risks and risk differences can be estimated.

Objectives: Our goal was to identify methods used to estimate covariate-adjusted relative risk and risk differences in RCTs published in high-impact journals with binary outcomes.

The D126G mutation contributes to the early-onset X-linked juvenile retinoschisis.

X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS) is an inherited retinal disease caused by mutations in the RS1 gene, resulting in splitting of the retinal layers and visual disturbances. To provide insights on this disease in our cohort, genetic examination, clinical presentation, and functional analysis were performed. We observed three main RS1 mutations in our cohort of six unrelated patients: RS1-D126G, RS1-R209H, and RS1-R213W.

Molecular and spatial analysis of tertiary lymphoid structures in Sjogren's syndrome.

Tertiary lymphoid structures play important roles in autoimmune and non-autoimmune conditions. While many of the molecular mechanisms involved in tertiary lymphoid structure formation have been identified, the cellular sources and temporal and spatial relationship remain unknown. Here we use combine single-cell RNA-sequencing, spatial transcriptomics and proteomics of minor salivary glands of patients with Sjogren's disease and Sicca Syndrome, with ex-vivo functional studies to construct a cellular and spatial map of key components involved in the formation and function of tertiary lymphoid structures.

Structural and electronic features enabling delocalized charge-carriers in CuSbSe.

Inorganic semiconductors based on heavy pnictogen cations (Sb and Bi) have gained significant attention as potential nontoxic and stable alternatives to lead-halide perovskites for solar cell applications. A limitation of these novel materials, which is being increasingly commonly found, is carrier localization, which substantially reduces mobilities and diffusion lengths. Herein, CuSbSe is investigated and discovered to have delocalized free carriers, as shown through optical pump terahertz probe spectroscopy and temperature-dependent mobility measurements.

Genetic variants of accessory proteins and G proteins in human genetic disease.

We present a series of three articles on the genetics and pharmacogenetics of G protein- coupled receptors (GPCR). In the first article, we discuss genetic variants of the G protein subunits and accessory proteins that are associated with human phenotypes; in the second article, we build upon this to discuss "G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) gene variants and human genetic disease" and in the third article, we survey "G protein-coupled receptor pharmacogenomics". In the present article, we review the processes of ligand binding, GPCR activation, inactivation, and receptor trafficking to the membrane in the context of human genetic disease resulting from pathogenic variants of accessory proteins and G proteins.

Task-sharing with families for early detection of postoperative complications in resource-limited settings.

Postoperative mortality in Africa is twice that of wealthier countries. The SMARTER trial underscores this critical issue and aims to address the high mortality rates by harnessing a readily available resource requiring minimal funding. Conducted in Mbale, Uganda, this innovative trial trained family members to monitor basic vital signs following surgery.

Prediction of good neurological outcome after return of circulation following paediatric cardiac arrest: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Aim: To evaluate the ability of blood-biomarkers, clinical examination, electrophysiology, or neuroimaging, assessed within 14 days from return of circulation to predict good neurological outcome in children following out- or in-hospital cardiac arrest.

Methods: Medline, EMBASE and Cochrane Trials databases were searched (2010-2023). Sensitivity and false positive rates (FPR) for good neurological outcome (defined as either 'no, mild, moderate disability or minimal change from baseline') in paediatric survivors were calculated for each predictor.

An explainable machine learning system for efficient use of waste glasses in durable concrete to maximise carbon credits towards net zero emissions.

Recycling waste glass (WG) can be time-consuming, costly, and impractical. However, its incorporation into concrete significantly reduces environmental impact and carbon emissions. This paper introduces machine learning (ML) to civil engineering to optimise WG utilisation in concrete, supporting sustainability objectives.

Decomposition based neural dynamics for portfolio management with tradeoffs of risks and profits under transaction costs.

Real-time online optimisation plays a crucial role in high-frequency trading (HFT) strategies. The Markowitz model, as a Nobel Prize-winning framework, is widely used for portfolio management optimisation by framing the problem as a constrained quadratic programming task. While conventional analytical methods are typically effective for solving quadratic programming problems with linear constraints, the introduction of both linear equality and inequality constraints in the Markowitz model necessitates the use of numerical methods.

Uncharted territory: the arrival of (Zetterstedt, 1850) (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Maritime Antarctica.

Despite increasing awareness of the threats they pose, exotic species continue to arrive in Antarctica with anthropogenic assistance, some of which inevitably have the potential to become aggressively invasive. Here, we provide the first report of the globally cosmopolitan species (Diptera, Psychodidae; commonly known as moth flies) in Antarctica during the austral summer of 2021/2022, with the identification confirmed using traditional taxonomic and molecular approaches. The species was present in very large numbers and, although predominantly associated with the drainage and wastewater systems of Antarctic national operator stations in synanthropic situations, it was also present in surrounding natural habitats.

Quantification of atrial cardiomyopathy disease severity by electroanatomic voltage mapping and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Introduction: Atrial late gadolinium enhancement (Atrial-LGE) and electroanatomic voltage mapping (Atrial-EAVM) quantify the anatomical and functional extent of atrial cardiomyopathy. We aimed to explore the relationships between, and outcomes from, these modalities in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing ablation.

Methods: Patients undergoing first-time ablation had disease severities quantified using both Atrial-LGE and Atrial-EAVM.

Vitamin D and Endometriosis: Is There a Mechanistic Link?

Endometriosis is a prevalent chronic gynaecological disorder, but its cause is still unclear, and both genetic and environmental factors may contribute disease aetiology. Prominent amongst the latter is vitamin D which can be obtained either by the action of sunlight on skin or from dietary sources. Serum levels of the main circulating form of vitamin D, 25-hydroxvitamin D (25(OH)D), have been reported to be inversely correlated with endometriosis, suggesting that vitamin D-deficiency may be a risk factor for the disease.

Sleep disorders in functional neurological disorder - a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Functional neurological disorders (FND) are conditions marked by disruptions in brain network function without structural abnormalities. Sleep disturbances, though under-researched, are commonly observed in FND patients and may worsen symptoms and overall health.

A Systematic Review of the Prevalence of Overactive Bladder in Women with Non-Urinary Tract Endometriosis and the Effect of Endometriosis Surgery on Symptoms of Overactive Bladder.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Overactive bladder (OAB) is characterised by urinary urgency, with or without incontinence, often accompanied by daytime frequency and nocturia, in the absence of urinary tract infection or other identifiable causes. Population studies estimate the prevalence of OAB at 12.8% (EPIC study), increasing with age, reaching up to 43% after age 40.

The brain selectively allocates energy to functional brain networks under cognitive control.

Network energy has been conceptualized based on structural balance theory in the physics of complex networks. We utilized this framework to assess the energy of functional brain networks under cognitive control and to understand how energy is allocated across canonical functional networks during various cognitive control tasks. We extracted network energy from functional connectivity patterns of subjects who underwent fMRI scans during cognitive tasks involving working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility, in addition to task-free scans.

Microscopic changes in the multifidus muscle in people with low back pain associated with lumbar disc herniation.

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common degenerative condition causing low back pain (LBP) due to nerve compression. Previous studies show conflicting findings regarding the multifidus (MF) muscle's microscopic changes in LDH patients. So, this study aimed to compare the affected MF to the adjacent MF on the ipsilateral and contralateral sides in LDH patients and examined correlations with clinical features of LBP.

Roughness integration across fingers within compared with across the hands.

Feeling a texture typically involves sliding the fingers of a hand across that surface or rubbing the surface between the thumb and another digit. Texture signals appear to be integrated across the digits of a hand with perceived roughness at one finger swayed in the direction of texture touched by another finger of the same hand. To date, one study has reported similar integrative effects when the pairs of digits belong to different hands.

A systematic review of adult pineoblastoma.

Background: Adult pineoblastoma is an extremely rare central nervous system malignancy. Limitations of tumour databases, single institution retrospective analyses and a few case reports are not sufficient to clarify treatment options. Therefore, a systematic review of comprehensive research data provides referenceable treatment options.
