Background: Minority ethnic patients are less likely to access timely and effective palliative and end-of-life care and, as a consequence, more likely to experience poorer symptom management and receive more intensive treatments at the end of life. Research activity has the potential to address the aforementioned barriers to improve access. However, there is a need to develop capacity and capability, particularly within underserved communities, to provide an infrastructure that can drive research activity informed by the community to benefit the community.

Radial mechanical properties of deoxyribonucleic acid molecules.

Nanotechnology

December 2024

International Research Centre for Nano Handling and Manufacturing of China, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun 130022, People's Republic of China.

Given the small diameter of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the difficulty in studying its radial mechanical properties laid in the challenge of applying a precise and controlled small force. In this work, the radial mechanical properties of DNA were measured in the AFM. DNA adhesion properties were analyzed through force-distance curves and adhesion images.

  • - The study investigates the taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships among genera in the Mniaceae family, specifically focusing on the genera Mnium, Plagiomnium, and Pohlia, highlighting controversies in classification.
  • - Researchers sequenced the chloroplast genomes of three Plagiomnium species, noting their sizes, structure, GC content, and observed genetic diversity using various analytical methods.
  • - Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that the Plagiomnium genus is closely related to Mnium while suggesting that Pohlia is not monophyletic; the findings support the overall monophyly of Mniaceae and a potential revision of Pohlia's classification.

Mechanical properties of bone cells studied by atomic force microscopy.

J Microsc

December 2024

International Research Centre for Nano Handling and Manufacturing of China, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun, China.

Osteoblasts are the functional cells capable of bone formation in the bone microenvironment and play an important role in bone growth, development, and the maintenance of bone mass. The cells cultured in vitro are derived from preosteoblasts in tissues and possess the ability to divide and proliferate. Osteoblasts form the bone matrix by secreting collagen and other matrix proteins, which provides a foundation for the deposition of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, ultimately resulting in the formation of hard bone tissue.

Anal Methods

November 2024

International Research Centre for Nano Handling and Manufacturing of China, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun 130022, China.

In recent years, multifunctional cell regulation on a single chip has become an imperative need for cell research. In this study, a novel multi-functional micro-platform integrating wireless electrical stimulation, mechanical stimulation and electrical response recording of cells was proposed. Controlling cell fate by photoexcited radio stimulation of cells on photosensitive films can precisely orchestrate biological activities.

Although India's organ donation rate is less than 1 per million population, significant disparities exist between the regions and centres within the country, leading to varying consent rates among different organ donation centres. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the experience of transplant coordinators and their barriers and facilitators in the deceased organ donation process across various organ donation centres in India. A phenomenological study using interviews was conducted among fourteen transplant coordinators purposefully recruited from public and private organ donation centres in India, with experience between six years and more than a decade.

Article Synopsis
  • Atlantic reef-building corals are declining due to climate change, disease, pollution, and human activities, prompting a reassessment of their extinction risk under the IUCN Red List.
  • The latest evaluation shows an increase in the percentage of species at high extinction risk, with nearly 46% to 54% of shallow water corals now classified as threatened, compared to 15% to 40% in 2008.
  • Although there's been a slight improvement in coral coverage over historical data, projections indicate that severe bleaching events could significantly threaten the future survival of 26 species, which are now labeled as Critically Endangered.

Background: Physical inactivity is an ongoing problem throughout the lifespan. For older people, inactivity has a negative impact on wellbeing, which worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital technologies can be employed to encourage uptake of social and physical activity through remotely delivered interventions to improve wellbeing, however, we need to understand older people's perceptions and experiences of using digital technologies before implementing these interventions.

Machine learning-based optimal temperature management model for safety and quality control of perishable food supply chain.

Sci Rep

November 2024

School of Computer Science and Technology, Institute for Research in Engineering and Sustainable Environment, University of Bedfordshire, Luton, LU1 3JU, UK.

The management of a food supply chain is difficult and complex because of the product's short shelf-life, time-sensitivity, and perishable nature which must be carefully considered to minimize food waste. Temperature-controlled perishable food supply chain provides the highly crucial facilities necessary to maintain the quality and safety of the product. The storage temperature is the most vital factor in maintaining both the quality and shelf-life of a perishable food.

Nursing students in undergraduate programmes exhibit comparable, sometimes higher, levels of poor mental health and substance use compared to the general population; however, this area remains under-researched in New Zealand. The study involved 172 nursing students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing programme at one tertiary institution in Auckland, New Zealand. Employing a mixed-methodology approach, a 29-question survey comprising both open and closed questions was administered to explore the students' experiences with mental health and substance use, as well as their access to support services.

Atomic force microscopy wide-field scanning imaging using homography matrix optimization.

Micron

January 2025

International Research Centre for Nano Handing and Manufacturing of China, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun 130012, China. Electronic address:

During the offline combination of multiple atomic force microscopy (AFM) images, changes in probe displacement can be affected by dynamic noise, leading to dislocation and tearing in the stitching. To overcome this, we designed a homography matrix optimization method to describe the relative positional relationship between images by constructing the original image matrix and applying singular value decomposition to denoise the homography matrix. Additionally, we implemented a scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) to extract feature points.

Introduction: The NHS has made it mandatory for General Practices in England to proactively identify and manage older people with moderate and severe frailty since the GMS contract of 2017/2018. In Luton, stakeholders developed the Luton Framework of Frailty (LFF) to implement this national policy. The aim of this study was to explore the factors that affect the implementation of this national policy at a local level.

Article Synopsis
  • Sarcopenia significantly impacts older adults by causing loss of independence and increasing frailty, and reducing sedentary behavior can help improve these issues.
  • A mixed-methods study involving interviews with 15 older adults assessed the effectiveness of the Frail-LESS intervention, which included tools like activity trackers and health coaching to promote active living.
  • Results showed that participants found the intervention generally acceptable, particularly valuing the activity tracker and coaching, while responses were mixed for other components like the psychoeducation workbook and online support.

Background: The path of a complaint and patient satisfaction with complaint resolution is often dependent on the responses of healthcare professionals (HCPs). It is therefore important to understand the influences shaping HCP behaviour. This systematic review aimed to (1) identify the key actors, behaviours and factors influencing HCPs' responses to complaints, and (2) apply behavioural science frameworks to classify these influences and provide recommendations for more effective complaints handling behaviours.

October 2024

International Research Centre for Nano Handling and Manufacturing of China, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun 130022, China.

Understanding the interlayer interaction between 2D layered structures is critical for the construction of various micro- and nanoscale functional devices. However, both the normal and the tangential interlayer interactions between 2D layered materials have rarely been studied simultaneously. In this work, an immersion and lift-up method is proposed to wrap a layer of graphene flakes onto a plasma-pretreated atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoprobe for the measurements of interaction forces by AFM.
