Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) represents an endocrine condition affecting 5-18% of adolescents, frequently in association with obesity, metabolic alterations, and liver dysfunction. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors for developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in a cohort of PCOS adolescents. Thirty-two girls were assessed for anthropometric and biochemical markers: total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG), glucose, insulin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (γGT).

Biosensors are low-cost and low-maintenance alternatives to conventional analytical techniques for biomedical, industrial and environmental applications. Biosensors based on whole microorganisms can be genetically engineered to attain high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of selected analytes. While bacteria-based biosensors have been extensively reported, there is a recent interest in yeast-based biosensors, combining the microbial with the eukaryotic advantages, including possession of specific receptors, stability and high robustness.

Fruit pomace addition to lucerne silage could rapidly reduce silage pH creating an acidic environment and thus maybe preventing spoilage. However, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different rates of inclusion of citrus lemon by-products on lucerne. In this study, the following five different treatments were prepared: L0 (control) with 100% lucerne; L25 (75% lucerne with 25% lemon pomace); L50 (50% lucerne with 50% lemon pomace); L75 (25% lucerne with 75% lemon pomace); and L100 (100% lemon pomace).

Collecting duct carcinomas (CDCs) are a particularly rare subtype of kidney cancer, endowed by a particularly poor prognosis. Since no active treatments have been established for CDCs, due to similarities with upper tract urothelial carcinomas, the use of the cisplatin-gemcitabine doublet is usually recommended. Here we report a retrospective analysis of 36 metastatic CDCs treated, as everyday clinical practice, with either cisplatin-gemcitabine or cisplatin-gemcitabine-paclitaxel from 2005 to 2021.

Most head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) are caused by lifestyle, such as cigarette smoking, or by viruses, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). HNSCC remains a clinical challenge, notwithstanding the improvements observed in the past years, involving surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Recurrent/metastatic (R/M) disease represents an unmet clinical need.

In a continuing search of dual P-gp and hCA XII inhibitors, we synthesized and studied new ,-bis(alkanol)amine aryl diester derivatives characterized by the presence of a coumarin group. These hybrids contain both P-gp and hCA XII binding groups to synergistically overcome the P-gp-mediated multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancer cells expressing both P-gp and hCA XII. Indeed, hCA XII modulates the efflux activity of P-gp and the inhibition of hCA XII reduces the intracellular pH, thereby decreasing the ATPase activity of P-gp.

Microphthalmia Transcription Factor (MiT) family aberration-associated renal cell carcinoma is a rare disease, whose true prevalence is unknown, due to the need of molecular confirmation, commonly by Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH), for its diagnosis. In fact, this tumor is commonly misdiagnosed, often labeled as clear cell RCC, papillary RCC and chromophobe RCC. It is typically observed in young patients, and it can have indolent or aggressive behavior.

This article analyzes the physiological role of pain during parturition in domestic animals, discusses the controversies surrounding the use of opioids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and local analgesics as treatments during labor, and presents the advantages and disadvantages for mother and offspring. Labor is a potentially stressful and painful event, due to the contractions that promote expulsion of the fetus. During labor, neurotransmitters such as the prostaglandins contribute to the sensitization of oxytocin receptors in the myometrium and the activation of nociceptive fibers, thus supporting the physiological role of pain.

The present review aims to integrate the anatomical characteristics of the mammary gland and the neurophysiology of milk ejection to understand the milking capacity of the water buffalo. Since one of the main uses of this species is milk production, this article will analyze the controversies on the use of oxytocin as a stimulant during milking as well as the existing alternatives that farmers apply to promote correct stimulation during milk letdown. According to the available literature, the efficiency of the milking process, the quality of the milk, and the health of the animals are elements that require the consideration of species-specific characteristics to enhance the performance of buffaloes.

The interactions between diluted phospholipid vesicles (0.3 μM - 40 μM) and surfactants (around their cmc) have been investigated as model of the phenomena taking place when enveloped viruses are challenged by detergent formulations such as mouthwashes or dishwashing liquids. We have used negatively charged Small Unilamellar Vesicles (SUVs) to simulate the negatively charged viral envelope and surfactants with different charges: the anionic Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS), the cationic Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC) and the non-ionic Octaethylene glycol monodecyl ether (CE).

A novel membraneless β-glucan/O enzymatic fuel cell was developed by combining a bioanode based on buckypaper modified with co-immobilized Agaricus meleagris pyranose dehydrogenase (AmPDH) and Rhodothermus marinus β-glucosidase (RmBgl3B) (RmBgl3B-AmPDH/buckypaper) with a biocathode based on solid graphite modified with Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase (MvBOx/graphite). AmPDH was connected electrochemically with the buckypaper using an osmium redox polymer in a mediated reaction, whereas MvBOx was connected with graphite in a direct electron transfer reaction. The fuel for the bioanode was produced by enzymatic hydrolysis of β-glucan by the exoglucanase RmBgl3B into d-glucose, which in turn was enzymatically oxidised by AmPDH to generate a current response.

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) plays a key role in development of fetal kidney. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1) antagonists alter RAAS-signaling compromising metanephrogenesis, and vascular and tubular development. The result is a fetal "RAS blockage syndrome" that may occur not only following exposure during the second and third trimester, but also after the use of these drugs at the beginning of pregnancy.

The therapeutic armamentarium of metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma (mRCC) has consistently expanded in recent years, with the introduction of VEGF/VEGFR (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor/Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor) inhibitors, mTOR (mammalian Target Of Rapamycin) inhibitors and Immune Checkpoint (IC) inhibitors. Currently, for the first-tline treatment of mRCC it is possible to choose between a VEGFR-TKI (VEGFR-Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor) monotherapy, an ICI-ICI (Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor) combination and an ICI-VEGFRTKI combination. However, a consistent part of patients does not derive benefit from first-line therapy with ICIs; moreover, the use of combination regimens exposes patients to significant toxicities.

Concentration is a key determinant in the overall positive impact of terpenes on milk and cheese aroma; additionally, route of intake may affect the achievable concentrations of dietary terpenes in milk and cheese. In this study, we explored the possibility that the amount of the monoterpene limonene transferred to sheep milk and its corresponding cheese could differ depending on the route of intake and that the aroma profile of these products could also differ. To this aim, 12 lactating dairy ewes were repeatedly exposed to limonene by the oral or respiratory route during a 48-h test period, according to a 3 × 3 Latin square experimental design.

In recent years, the involvement of the gut microbiota in disease and health has been investigated by sequencing the 16S gene from fecal samples. Dysbiotic gut microbiota was also observed in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms. However, despite the relevant number of studies, it is still difficult to identify a typical dysbiotic profile in ASD patients.

Chemotherapy is much more effective in immunocompetent mice than in immunodeficient ones, and it is now acknowledged that an efficient immune system is necessary to optimize chemotherapy activity and efficacy. Furthermore, chemotherapy itself may reinvigorate immune response in different ways: by targeting cancer cells through the induction of cell stress, the release of damage signals and the induction of immunogenic cell death, by targeting immune cells, inhibiting immune suppressive cells and/or activating immune effector cells; and by targeting the host physiology through changes in the balance of gut microbiome. All these effects acting on immune and non-immune components interfere with the tumor microenvironment, leading to the different activity and efficacy of treatments.

In this in vitro study, we test our hypothesis that Broccoli-derived vesicles (BDVs), combining the anti-oxidant properties of their components and the advantages of their structure, can influence the metabolic activity of different cancer cell lines. BDVs were isolated from homogenized fresh broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.) using a sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation method and were characterized in terms of physical properties, such as particle size, morphology, and surface charge by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and laser doppler electrophoresis (LDE).
