The application of personalized medicine in patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) requires tools for classifying patients according to their response to treatment, considering both treatment efficacy and toxicity. However, several limitations have hindered its translation into clinical practice. Here, we describe the rationale, aims and methodology of (the FarmaPRED-PEP project), which aims to develop and validate predictive algorithms to classify FEP patients according to their response to antipsychotics, thereby allowing the most appropriate treatment strategy to be selected.

Small fetuses, with estimated fetal weight (EFW) below the tenth percentile, are classified as fetal growth restriction (FGR) or small for gestational age (SGA) based on prenatal ultrasound. FGR fetuses have a greater risk of stillbirth and perinatal complications and may benefit from serial ultrasound scans to guide early delivery. Abnormal serum angiogenic factors, such as the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1):placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio, have shown potential to more accurately distinguish FGR from SGA, with fewer false positives.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the importance of core strength for stroke recovery and examines whether adding Core Stability Exercises (CSE) to conventional physiotherapy (CP) enhances recovery outcomes.
  • Eighty-seven early stroke survivors were divided into two groups: one receiving CSE alongside CP and the other receiving only CP, with assessments conducted before and after a 5-week intervention.
  • Results showed that the experimental group experienced significant improvements in dynamic sitting balance, trunk coordination, lower limb spasticity, and overall balance compared to the control group, suggesting that incorporating CSE may be beneficial for stroke rehabilitation.

Women are known to have twice as much lifetime prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as men do. It has been reported that the risk genotype (CC) of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs2267735) in the pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP-PAC1R) system is associated with PTSD risk and altered fear conditioning and fear extinction in women. Surprisingly, no previous work has studied the effect of this SNP on fear conditioning, extinction, or generalization in non-traumatized/low trauma load women.

The role of amphipathic and cationic helical peptides in Parkinson's disease.

Protein Sci

January 2025

Institut de Biotecnologia i de Biomedicina and Departament de Bioquímica i Biologia Molecular, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Peptides are attracting a growing interest for therapeutic applications in biomedicine. In Parkinson's disease (PD), different human endogenous peptides have been associated with beneficial effects, including protein aggregation inhibition, reduced inflammation, or the protection of dopaminergic neurons. Such effects seem to be connected to the spatial arrangement of peptide side chains, and many of these human molecules share common conformational traits, displaying a distinctive amphipathic and cationic helical structure, which is believed to be crucial for their activities.
