Chemical monitoring of water quality on a total of 16 rivers in the Azores archipelago (Portugal), since 2003, made it possible to identify the major pressures and spatial geochemical variations along main course of the rivers. River water pollution is to a large extent associated to point sources, namely domestic wastewater discharges, especially in urban areas, and diffuse sources, associated with pasture land, and explain the high values on BOD(5) and nutrients (P and N). Heavy metals and metalloids, as well as hydrocarbons and pesticides, are generally under the detection limits of the analytical methods.

The phytochemical analysis of the bark of Juniperus brevifolia was undertaken for the first time. The GC-MS analysis of the hexane extract from bark of "cedro-do-mato" (J. brevifolia) allowed to identify three rare compounds for the first time in Juniperus genus: 6,7-dehydroferrugin-12-methyl ether, 11-hydroxy-6,7-dehydroferruginol and 6,7-dehydrohinokiol.

The dichloromethane extract from leaves of Juniperus brevifolia, through chromatographic fractionations yield six compounds: 3beta-hydroxy-abieta-8,11,13-trien-7-one, 18-hydroxy-sandaracopimara-8(14),15-dien-7-one, sandaracopimara-8(14),15-dien-18-yl formate; and the first examples of sandaracopimaranes and abieta-8,11,13-triene diterpenoids with a large aliphatic chain on C-18, abieta-8,11,13-trien-18-yl hexadecanoate, 7-oxoabieta-8,11,13-trien-18-yl hexadecanoate, sandaracopimara-8(14),15-dien-18-yl hexadecanoate. Moreover fifteen known compounds were also isolated, some of them for the first time identified on Juniperus genus. The compound abieta-8,11,13-trien-18-yl formate is reported for the first time as a natural product.

We relate fish biological and ecological characteristics to total and organic mercury concentrations to determine whether accumulation is influenced by trophic level, Hg concentration in the diet, and vertical distribution. Levels of total mercury and methylmercury were determined in the muscle tissue of eight species of fish: Pagellus acarne, Trachurus picturatus, Phycis phycis, P. blennoides, Polyprion americanus, Conger conger, Lepidopus caudatus and Mora moro, caught in the Azores.

This study reports on the concentration of both, toxic (Hg) and essential (Fe, Cu, Zn) metals in representative species, at four hydrothermal vents along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) corresponding to the different exposure conditions that are the result of contrasted geological setting and different depths along the ridge axis. Macro fauna collected from these vent sites showed markedly different whole tissue concentration of metals reflecting exposure levels. Bio-transfer of metals within a typical hydrothermal food chain was investigated.

Unidentified extracellular prokaryotes within the byssal threads of the deep-sea vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus.

Bacterial symbiosis and/or parasitism is widespread in hydrothermal bivalves, and is typically developed in gills, with a lower incidence in mantle and digestive glands, while it has never been described in byssus. Using ultrastructural examination, we provide evidence for the existence of a potentially new group of filamentous prokaryotic organism in Bathymodiolus azoricus byssus, with putative parasitic influence. Additionally, a cystic, undefined organism was found with an unclear physiological role within the spongy net of the byssus plaque.

Hydrothermal ecosystems of the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) are dominated by shrimps and mussels that are naturally exposed to elevated levels of heavy metals providing unique in situ laboratories for ecotoxicological investigations. This study reports on the tissue compartmentalization of both micro-essential (Fe, Zn, Cu) and toxic metals (Hg) in two nutritionally distinct cariddean vent shrimps: Rimicaris exoculata and Mirocaris fortunata, in order to shed light on organism-biota interactions at hydrothermal vents. High metal concentrations in shrimps confirmed extreme exposure levels at both geochemically different hydrothermal vents (Rainbow and Lucky Strike).

In this study, we investigated on concentrations of trace metals (Al, Cd, Mn, Co, and Hg) in the hydrothermal bivalve Bathymodiolus azoricus, a dominant species at most vent sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), and in its endosymbiont bacteria and commensal parasite Branchipolynoe seepensis. Comparison of our results with data from the literature on non-hydrothermal bivalves suggests lack of "extreme" uptake of trace metals by B. azoricus, except for Hg concentration which exceeded manyfold previously reported values.

Pentacyclic triterpenes from Euphorbia stygiana.

Two pentacyclic triterpenes, D-friedomadeir-14-en-3beta-yl acetate and D:C-friedomadeir-7-en-3beta-yl acetate, named madeiranyl acetate and isomadeiranyl acetate, respectively, were isolated from leaves of Euphorbia stygiana, together with the two known madeiranes, D-friedomadeir-14-en-3-one and D:C-friedomadeir-7-en-3-one, which were obtained from the stem bark. In addition, four known lupane and taraxerane-type triterpenes, namely lupenyl acetate, lupenone, taraxeryl acetate and taraxerone, were also isolated from the same source. Structures were elucidated by physical, chemical and spectroscopic methods (1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR and mass spectra) and by comparison with literature data, and in the case of D:C-friedomadeir-7-en-3beta-yl acetate by X-ray analysis as well.
