Prostate cancer cell-stromal cell crosstalk via FGFR1 mediates antitumor activity of dovitinib in bone metastases.

Bone is the most common site of prostate cancer (PCa) progression to a therapy-resistant, lethal phenotype. We found that blockade of fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) with the receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor dovitinib has clinical activity in a subset of men with castration-resistant PCa and bone metastases. Our integrated analyses suggest that FGF signaling mediates a positive feedback loop between PCa cells and bone cells and that blockade of FGFR1 in osteoblasts partially mediates the antitumor activity of dovitinib by improving bone quality and by blocking PCa cell-bone cell interaction.

Health Related Quality of Life in a Sample of Older People who are Members of Open Care Centers for the Elderly.

The consequences of demographic ageing, demographic and social-economic changes, changes in the structure of family, in the shrinkage of Welfare state, influenced the lifestyle of the older people and their social relations. The institution of Open Care Centers for the Elderly (KAPI) was created in the context of these conditions. This cross-sectional study examined the lifestyle of the older people who are member of KAPI and their association with all HRQoL dimensions.

Imaging: diagnostic value of ultrasonography in Sjögren's syndrome.

Salivary gland ultrasonography is a promising tool for the evaluation of Sjögren’s syndrome. Giant cell fibroma in children: report of two cases and literature review.

Background: Giant cell fibroma is a type of fibrous tumour of the oral mucosa which rarely affects children under the age of 10. The purpose of this paper was to contribute two clinically and histologically documented cases of giant cell fibroma in the free gingiva of a 7 and 6 year old boys.

Development of an educational program for the training of health care professionals concerning low back pain.

Common low back pain represents a major public health problem due to its direct cost to health care and to various socio economic consequences. Although low back pain may be caused by medical conditions, such as any kind of infections or cancer, the vast majority of the cases are attributed to mechanical or muscle skeletal conditions. Nurses and other health care professionals are on the top of the list for experiencing low back pain based on the duties performed in their working environment.

Structural, biochemical and non-traditional cardiovascular risk markers in PCOS.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous syndrome of reproductive and metabolic derangements. The combination of anovulation and hyperandrogenism signifies the classic form of PCOS which displays the adverse metabolic phenotype of the syndrome. This phenotype includes visceral obesity and insulin resistance as well as a constellation of other traditional cardiovascular risk factors, mainly low grade inflammation, disturbances of glucose metabolism and dyslipidemia.

Oral manifestations of T-cell large granular lymphocytic leukemia: a case report.

Background: T-cell large granular lymphocytic (T-LGL) leukemia is a rare, chronic, often indolent lymphoproliferative disorder of mature T cells (CD3+). Severe neutropenia and other cytopenias are common features in patients with T-LGL leukemia and may cause infections, thus representing a major cause of morbidity in this disease. Immunosuppressive therapy with low-dose regimes of methotrexate, cyclophosphamide, corticosteroids or cyclosporine A is the treatment of choice.

Granular cell ameloblastoma: an unusual histological subtype report and review of literature.

Background: Granular cell ameloblastoma is a rare histological subtype of ameloblastoma accounting for less than 5% of the total. The characteristic microscopic features of granular cells are attributed to the increased presence of lysosomes in the cytoplasm of the tumour cells.

Methods: A case of bone expansion in the mandible of 65 year old patient was examined on the basis of the clinical examination, radiographic imaging and microscopic features.

Anthropometric, flexibility, strength-power, and sport-specific correlates in elite fencing.

This study investigated selected structural correlates of fencing performance. 33 elite fencers were tested on (a) selected anthropometric, flexibility, and strength-power related parameters, and (b) specific lower extremity functional fencing tests. Multiple regression showed that drop jump and thigh cross-sectional area were best predictors of lunge time and distance of squat jump on the shuttle test.

Effect of in vitro gastric and duodenal digestion on the allergenicity of grape lipid transfer protein.

Background: Severe grape allergy has been linked to lipid transfer protein (LTP) sensitization. LTPs are known to be resistant to pepsin digestion, although the effect of gastroduodenal digestion on its allergenicity has not been reported.

Narrow stereotactic beam profile measurements using N-vinylpyrrolidone based polymer gels and magnetic resonance imaging.

In this work, polymer gel-MRI dosimetry (using VIPAR gels), radiographic film and a PinPoint ion chamber were used for profile measurements of 6 MV x-ray stereotactic beams of 5 and 10 mm diameter.
