Cryptococcal infection commonly begins as an opportunistic infection in humans, however, this can escalate to a systemic or life-threatening form in immunocompromised individuals. Here, we aim to identify novel antifungal molecules from plants resources. Sclareolide, a phytochemical classified as a sesquiterpene lactone, was assessed against H99.

Although a lack of diversity in genetic studies is an acknowledged obstacle for personalized medicine and precision public health, Latin American populations remain particularly understudied despite their heterogeneity and mixed ancestry. This gap extends to COVID-19 despite its variability in susceptibility and clinical course, where ethnic background appears to influence disease severity, with non-Europeans facing higher hospitalization rates. In addition, access to high-quality samples and data is a critical issue for personalized and precision medicine, and it has become clear that the solution lies in biobanks.

The evolution of chemotherapy, especially the dawn of metal-based drugs, represents a transformative era in cancer treatment. From the serendipitous discovery of mustard gas's cytotoxic effects to the sophisticated development of targeted therapies, chemotherapy has significantly refined. Central to this progression is the incorporation of metal-based compounds, such as platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru), and gold (Au), which offer unique mechanisms of action, distinguishing them from organic therapeutics.

Objectives: Analyze whether there are immediate changes in peak soleus activation and peak hindfoot eversion after short-foot exercise (SFE) in runners with medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS). Secondarily, establish differences in peak soleus activation and peak hindfoot eversion between asymptomatic individuals and those presenting MTSS.
Design: Quasi-experimental study.

Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) is a widely used measure that captures somatic symptoms of coronavirus-related anxiety. In a large-scale collaboration spanning 60 countries ( = 21,513), we examined the CAS's measurement invariance and assessed the convergent validity of CAS scores in relation to the fear of COVID-19 (FCV-19S) and the satisfaction with life (SWLS-3) scales. We utilized both conventional exact invariance tests and alignment procedures, with results revealing that the single-factor model fit the data well in almost all countries.

The ability to differentiate into cells of different lineages, such as bone cells, is the principal value of adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which can be used with the final aim of regenerating damaged tissue. Due to its potential use and importance in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, several questions have been raised regarding the molecular mechanisms of MSC differentiation. As one of the crucial mediators in organism development, the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily directs MSCs' commitment to selecting differentiation pathways.

Half-sandwich Ru(II) complexes containing nitro-substituted furoylthiourea ligands, bearing the general formula [(--cymene)RuCl(L)] (-) and [(--cymene)RuCl(L)(PPh)] (-), have been synthesized and characterized. In contrast to the spectroscopic data which revealed monodentate coordination of the ligands to the Ru(II) ion a "S" atom, single crystal X-ray structures revealed an unusual bidentate N, S coordination with the metal center forming a four-membered ring. Interaction studies by absorption, emission, and viscosity measurements revealed intercalation of the Ru(II) complexes with calf thymus (CT) DNA.

Context: Prepubertal adiposity is associated with earlier puberty. It is unclear when this association starts, if all adiposity markers are similarly associated, and whether all pubertal milestones are similarly affected.
Objective: To evaluate the association between different adiposity markers during childhood and the timing of different pubertal milestones in Latino girls.

This paper introduces a new family of quantile regression models whose response variable follows a reparameterized Marshall-Olkin distribution indexed by quantile, scale, and asymmetry parameters. The family has arisen by applying the Marshall-Olkin approach to distributions belonging to the location-scale family. Models of higher flexibility and whose structure is similar to generalized linear models were generated by quantile reparameterization.

Dexmedetomidine is an adrenergic receptor agonist that has been regarded as neuroprotective in several studies without an objective measure to it. Thus, the aim of this meta-analysis was to analyze and quantify the current evidence for the neuroprotective effects of dexmedetomidine in animals. The search was performed by querying the National Library of Medicine.

Catecholamine stimulation over adrenergic receptors results in a state of hypercoagulability. Chronic stress involves the release and increase in circulation of catecholamines and other stress related hormones. Numerous observational studies in human have related stressful scenarios to several coagulation variables, but controlled stimulation with agonists or antagonists to adrenergic receptors are scarce.

Hemostasis preserves blood fluidity and prevents its loss after vessel injury. The maintenance of blood fluidity requires a delicate balance between pro-coagulant and fibrinolytic status. Endothelial cells (ECs) in the inner face of blood vessels maintain hemostasis through balancing anti-thrombotic and pro-fibrinolytic activities.

Sepsis syndrome develops through enhanced secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Sepsis syndrome is characterized by vascular hyperpermeability, hypotension, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), and increased mortality, among others. Endotoxemia-derived sepsis is an important cause of sepsis syndrome.

Sexual (and gender)-dimorphism in tolerance to hypobaric hypoxia increasingly matters for a differential surveillance of human activities at high altitude (HA). At low altitudes, the prevalence of anxiety and depression in women has already been found to double when compared with men; it could be expected to even increase on exposure to HA. In purposefully caring for the health of women at HA, the present work explores the potential involvement of the tryptophan (Trp)-melatonin axis in mood changes on exposure to hypobaric hypoxia.

The growing problem of mental health in the university population, as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, has generated the need to consider positive variables to address this situation. Life satisfaction and academic engagement are two constructs that emerge as conceptual tools oriented in this direction. The present study sought to describe the effect of academic engagement on life satisfaction in a sample of Chilean university students.

Periodontitis is a chronic non-communicable disease caused by dysbiotic changes that affect the subgingival microbiota. During periodontitis, neutrophils play a central role in the initial recognition of bacteria, and their number increases with the appearance of the first signs of periodontal inflammation. Recent evidence has led to the proposition that neutrophils can also functionally polarize, determining selective activity patterns related to different diseases.

Learning techniques involve unraveling regression structures, which aim to analyze in a probabilistic frame the associations across variables of interest. Thus, analyzing fraction and/or proportion data may not be adequate with standard regression procedures, since the linear regression models generally assume that the dependent (outcome) variable is normally distributed. In this manner, we propose a statistical model called unit-Lindley regression model, for the purpose of Statistical Process Control (SPC).

Introduction: The Food Frequency Questionnaire is one of the most widely used tools for estimating nutritional intake in epidemiological studies. No study has been systematically performed to comprehensively explore Food Frequency Questionnaires designed, developed and validated specifically for the diabetic population (FFQs-DDV-DiaP). Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis will be carried out in order to identify and describe FFQs-DDV-DiaP; to examine their design, development, validity and reproducibility; as well as to estimate the overall degree of correlation and agreement; and to evaluate the factors that affect them.

The use of areca nuts (areca) in the form of betel quids constitutes the fourth most common addiction in the world, associated with high risk for oral disease and cancer. Areca is a complex natural product, making it difficult to identify specific components associated with the addictive and carcinogenic properties. It is commonly believed that the muscarinic agonist arecoline is at the core of the addiction.
