Cities are facing increasing pressures to address complex challenges of climate change, equity, and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples as intersecting issues, and innovation into planning and policy-making processes is urgently needed to achieve this. It is no longer good enough to work on these challenges discreetly, or solely within the dominant, western colonial paradigm and practices of governance. There are ongoing harms being caused by climate work that does not embed justice, and there are missed opportunities for synergies across these domains as they have the same systemic root causes.

With the global prevalence of COVID-19 disease, the concept of urban resilience against pandemics has drawn the attention of a wide range of researchers, urban planners, and policymakers. This study aims to identify the major dimensions and principles of urban resilience to pandemics through a systematic review focused on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and comparing different perspectives regarding resilient urban environments to such diseases. Based on the findings, the study proposes a conceptual framework and a series of principles of urban resilience to pandemics, consisting of four spatial levels: housing, neighborhoods, city, and the regional and national scales, and three dimensions of pandemic resilience: pandemic-related health requirements, environmental psychological principles, and general resilience principles.

In studies of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), the horizontal VOR circuit is much clearer than vertical-torsional VOR. The circuit and mechanism of gravity-related vertical-torsional VOR is probably weak. "Somatosensory vestibular interaction" is a known extra source to facilitate VOR, and cervico-ocular reflex is a representative for torsional VOR compensation.

In this article we highlight a number of the ongoing challenges faced by people living with HIV in the UK today (2021). Based on in-depth interviews with 23 respondents drawn from a range of ages, backgrounds and walks of life, we offer an insight into deeply personal experiences of what it means to have HIV. We demonstrate the degree to which, 40 years on from the formal emergence of the HIV pandemic, stigma and related structural violence remain both extremely present and extraordinarily debilitating.

Coherent interaction between matter and light field induces both optical Stark effect and Bloch-Siegert shift. Observing the latter has been historically challenging, because it is weak and is often accompanied by a much stronger Stark shift. Herein, by controlling the light helicity, we can largely restrict these two effects to different spin-transitions in CsPbI perovskite quantum dots, achieving room-temperature Bloch-Siegert shift as strong as 4 meV with near-infrared pulses.

How can we ensure accessibility of historical buildings that were built before the idea was ever dreamt of? Important historic monuments such as World Heritage have come to be made to some extent accessible with due consideration of their historical value (in extreme case, no accessibility is available, and replicated models or virtual reality is alternatively in place). Many buildings that are currently in use pose problems because they have to be usable by everyone. To what extent the historical values can be sacrificed for accessibility and usability? This paper tries to propose some ideas to meet both needs of historical significance and accessibility/usability through examination of several Japanese examples.

Sex determination is a crucial factor in the identification of unidentified human remains. Sex determination by DNA analysis is particularly useful because it can be applied to samples for which morphological characteristics are unavailable. Because samples handled in forensic DNA typing are easily degraded by environmental factors and microorganisms, there is a need for a method that can accurately determine sex even in highly decayed samples.

Prefabricated composite shear walls (PCSW) consisting of steel plate clapped by single-sided or double-sided prefabricated reinforced concrete (RC) panels have enormous advantages for application as lateral-resisting structures in prefabricated high-rising residential buildings. In this paper, three 1/3-scaled PCSW were manufactured and tested to investigate the seismic performance of PCSW with single-sided or double-sided prefabricated RC panels. The experimental results, including hysteretic and skeleton curves, stiffness and strength degradation, ductility, energy dissipation capability and steel frame effects, were interpreted, compared and summarized.

Background: In recent years, among managers and designers of health-care spaces, there has been a growing tendency to move toward hospital design by combining patient perceptions and expectations of the physical environment of the care area. The main idea of this study was to present a conceptual model of hospital architecture in our country with a patient-centered approach based on some factors that were affecting the sense of place. This model determined the architectural features of treatment spaces from a patient's lived experience that could have a positive mental effect on patients as well.
