Self-Assembly of Microstructured Protein Coatings with Programmable Functionality for Fluorescent Biosensors.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

November 2024

Tim Taylor Department of Chemical Engineering, Kansas State University, 1701A Platt Street, Manhattan, Kansas 66506, United States.

Proteins, as genetically programmable functional macromolecules, hold immense potential as biocompatible self-assembling building blocks, owing to their versatility in building coating materials and programming their functionality genetically. In this study, we demonstrate a modular self-assembly of protein coatings that are genetically programmable for a biosensor application. We designed and produced recombinant fusion protein building blocks to form microstructured coatings on diverse substrates, such as glass or polymers, through thermally triggered liquid-liquid phase separation and an orthogonal high-affinity coiled-coil interaction.

Article Synopsis
  • The Glasgow prognostic score (GPS) and CAR-HEMATOTOX (CAR-HT) score help identify multiple myeloma (MM) patients at risk for immune-related side effects and early death during cellular immunotherapy.
  • A study involving 126 MM patients treated with T-cell redirecting bispecific antibodies (bsAb) assessed the impact of these scores on patient outcomes.
  • While 19% of patients were deemed high risk according to GPS, they did not experience worse outcomes, but those classified as high risk by CAR-HT faced more infections and had lower survival rates, indicating the need for better infection management.

Beyond the First Trimester: Social Determinants of Delayed Prenatal Care at a Community Health Center Using the PRAPARE Tool.

J Racial Ethn Health Disparities

June 2024

Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation, University of Arkansas, 346 West Ave. Suite 317, Fayetteville, AR, 72701, USA.

Social determinants of health have been used to explore associations with pregnancy outcomes and the birth weight of infants; however, research employing individually based social risk measures has not examined associations among underserved populations, including pregnant persons at community health centers. Data were collected from a sample (n = 345) of pregnant persons who sought care at a community health center between January 2019 and December 2020. Social risks of pregnant patients were measured using the PRAPARE tool.

The optimization of infant neuronal development through nutrition is an increasingly studied area. While human milk consumption during infancy is thought to give a slight cognitive advantage throughout early childhood in comparison to commercial formula, the biological underpinnings of this process are less well-known and debated in the literature. This systematic review seeks to quantitatively analyze whether early diet affects infant neurodevelopment as measured by various neuroimaging modalities and techniques.

Electronic address:

Grape and grape derived products contain many bioactive phenolics which have a variety of impacts on health. Following oral ingestion, the phenolic compounds and their metabolites may be detectable in human urine. However, developing a reliable method for the analysis of phenolic compounds in urine is challenging.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio; University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio. Electronic address:

Background: The Index of Severity for Eosinophilic Esophagitis (I-SEE) is a new expert-defined clinical tool that classifies disease severity of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE).

Objective: We aimed to determine whether I-SEE is associated with patient characteristics, molecular features of EoE, or both.

Methods: We analyzed a prospective cohort of patients with EoE from the Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers (CEGIR).

Department of Environmental Protection, Estación Experimental del Zaidín, CSIC, c/ Profesor Albareda 1, 1808, Granada, Spain.

Background: Petrochemicals contribute to environmental issues, with concerns ranging from energy consumption and carbon emission to pollution. In contrast, microbial biorefineries offer eco-friendly alternatives. The solvent-tolerant Pseudomonas putida DOT-T1E serves as a suitable host for producing aromatic compounds, specifically L-phenylalanine and its derivative, 2-phenylethanol (2-PE), which find widespread applications in various industries.

Association Between Prepregnancy Body Mass Index and Newborn Breastfeeding Initiation.

Breastfeed Med

April 2024

Department of Health Policy and Management, Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Science, Little Rock, Arkansas, USA.

The benefits of breastfeeding a newborn are well documented. Identification of mothers who do not initiate breastfeeding is essential for developing initiatives to improve breastfeeding initiation. The study used data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) birth certificate data (2014-2021) to identifying 15,599,930 in-hospital deliveries.

In Zambia, women with breast symptoms travel through multiple levels of the healthcare system before obtaining a definitive diagnosis. To eradicate this critical barrier to care, we nested a novel breast specialty service platform inside a large public-sector primary healthcare facility in Lusaka, Zambia to offer clinical breast examination, breast ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy in a one-stop format, tightly linked to referral for treatment. The objective of the study was to determine the life expectancy and survival outcomes of a prospective cohort of women diagnosed with breast cancer who were attended to and followed up at the clinic.

Background: Estrogen withdrawal during menopause is associated with an unfavorable cardiometabolic profile. Prunes (dried plums) represent an emerging functional food and have been previously demonstrated to improve bone health. However, our understanding of the effects of daily prune intake on cardiometabolic risk factors in postmenopausal women is limited.

J Gastrointest Oncol

February 2024

Division of Hematology & Oncology, Highlands Oncology Group, Springdale, AR, USA.

Background: Patients presenting with large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNECs) comprise a small minority of total colon and rectal cancers (1-2%) with poor prognostic outcomes in lieu of late diagnosis and metastasis at the point of diagnosis.

Case Description: We report a case presentation of a 69-year-old male presenting with diffuse, non-severe upper abdominal pain and a positive at-home colon cancer screening test. At the time of presentation, the patient was negative for constipation or blood in stool.

Obesity is defined as excess adipose tissue; however, commonly used methods may under-detect adiposity in adolescents. This study compared the performance of body mass index percentile (BMI%) and relative body mass index (RBMI) in identifying excess body fat percentage (BF%) and estimated RBMI cut points to better stratify severity of adiposity. In 567 adolescents ages 11-19 year, BF% measured by DXA was used to compare BMI% and RBMI performance at different degrees of adiposity.

Skin Disease Research Institute, The 2nd Hospital and School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, China.

Recent development of new immune checkpoint inhibitors has been particularly successfully in cancer treatment, but still the majority patients fail to benefit. Converting resistant tumors to immunotherapy sensitive will provide a significant improvement in patient outcome. Here we identify Mi-2β as a key melanoma-intrinsic effector regulating the adaptive anti-tumor immune response.

Persistent Immune Effector Cell Associated Hematotoxicity (ICAHT) is a significant side effect of BCMA CAR T-Cell therapy in patients with relapsed multiple myeloma (MM). The use of stem cell boosts in ICAHT has been described, however studies have been limited by small patient numbers and short follow up. Herein, we report on our multi-institutional experience of ICAHT, defined by an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of ≤ 1000, thrombocytopenia with a platelet count ≤ 50,000 or/and anemia as hemoglobin (hgb) ≤9 g/dL, in patients who received BCMA CAR T therapy, and the effects of subsequent stem cell boost on hematopoietic reconstitution and clinical outcome.
