Background: Although the pathogenesis of delirium is poorly understood, increasing evidence supports a role for inflammation. Previously, individual inflammatory biomarkers have been associated with delirium. Aggregating biomarkers into an index may provide more information than individual biomarkers in predicting certain health outcomes (eg, mortality); however, inflammatory indices have not yet been examined in delirium.

Previous studies have attempted to identify risk factors predictive of postoperative complications to improve patient management. This study aims to identify pretreatment factors associated with post-bypass symptomatic strokes in MMD patients.

Efficacy of Terpinen-4-ol Combined With Eyelid Deep Cleaning for the Treatment of Demodex Blepharitis: A Randomized, Open-Label Trial.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a combined treatment regimen involving terpinen-4-ol (T4O) and eyelid deep cleaning for managing Demodex blepharitis.

Methods: In this randomized, open-label trial, 40 patients diagnosed with Demodex blepharitis at the Cornea Specialty Clinic of Hankou Aier Eye Hospital were enrolled. Participants were randomly assigned to either a T4O or a combination treatment group.

Smoking and outcomes in candidates for liver transplantation: Analysis of the Pulmonary Vascular Complications of Liver Disease 2 (PVCLD2).

Patients with chronic liver disease commonly have abnormal lung function; however, the impact of smoking on outcomes in these patients is unknown. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic severely impacted patients with rheumatic musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs), worsening health disparities, disrupting care, and affecting mental health. RMD patients, especially from marginalized communities, faced heightened COVID-19 susceptibility and severe outcomes. Telemedicine emerged as an important tool for maintaining access to care during the early pandemic period but highlighted disparities in access to the necessary technologies.

Comparison of responders and nonresponders with knee osteoarthritis after transcranial direct current stimulation.

Aim: The study compared responders and nonresponders to transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) regarding clinical pain outcomes in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients.

Patients And Methods/materials: Sixty participants received home-based active tDCS, and clinical pain outcomes were compared between responders and nonresponders.

Results: Latent class growth analyses classified 41 participants as responders and 19 as nonresponders.

Background: The International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery hosted the third in a series of webinars focused on innovative endoscopic spine surgery techniques. This session aimed to discuss and evaluate advanced treatments for lumbar spinal stenosis and related conditions utilizing multiportal endoscopic approaches; articulating instruments; unilateral biportal endoscopy; transforaminal techniques for facet cysts, herniated disc, and spinal stenosis; as well as percutaneous endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion (PELIF).

Tenofovir and Hepatitis B Virus Transmission During Pregnancy: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Standard care for preventing mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in highly viremic mothers consists of maternal antiviral prophylaxis beginning at gestational week 28 combined with an HBV vaccine series and HBV immune globulin (HBIG) at birth. However, HBIG is unavailable in some resource-limited areas.

Objective: To determine whether initiating tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) at gestational week 16 combined with HBV vaccinations for infants is noninferior to the standard care of TDF at gestational week 28 combined with HBV vaccinations and HBIG for infants in preventing MTCT in mothers with HBV and high levels of viremia.

Assessing the Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Creation of Patient Educational Videos for Corneal Refractive Surgery.

Purpose: We aim to assess the ability of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate patient educational videos for various corneal refractive surgeries.

Methods: Three AI text-to-video platforms (InVideo (San Francisco, CA), ClipTalk (San Francisco, CA), and EasyVid (Los Angeles, CA)) were used to create patient educational videos for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), respectively. Videos for LASIK and PRK from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and a SMILE video from Zeiss served as controls for each surgery.

Objectives: The study aimed to extract online comments of otolaryngologists in the 20 most populated cities in the United States from healthgrades.com, develop and validate a natural language processing (NLP) logistic regression algorithm for automated text classification of reviews into 10 categories, and compare 1- and 5-star reviews in directly-physician-related and non-physician-related categories.

Methods: 1977 1-star and 12,682 5-star reviews were collected.

Retrograde Thoracic Duct Access for Embolization of Lymphatic Malformations in a Child with Congenital Heart Disease and a Plexiform Thoracic Duct Variant.

The physiologic sequelae of the atypical vasculature in patients with congenital heart disease can result in potentially fatal lymphatic complications, especially after corrective cardiac surgery. Transcatheter embolization of the thoracic duct or lymphatic collaterals can reduce morbidity and mortality in these patients. While typically performed transabdominally via an antegrade approach, retrograde embolization may be preferable in cases where this is not feasible, including in rare variants of thoracic duct anatomy.

Protocol for Xenium spatial transcriptomics studies using fixed frozen mouse brain sections.

Here, we present a protocol for Xenium spatial transcriptomics studies using fixed frozen mouse brain sections. We describe steps for intracardiac perfusion, cryosectioning, and floating section mounting of brain sections, which enable runs on the Xenium analyzer and data delivery. We demonstrate that, in addition to the 10× Genomics-validated formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) and fresh frozen sections, fixed frozen thin brain sections are compatible with the Xenium platform and provide excellent imaging and quantification results for spatially resolved gene expression.
