Biochar is an environmentally friendly adsorbent material with excellent adsorption performance due to its extensive pore structure, large specific surface area, and numerous surface functional groups. It is commonly used to treat inorganic and organic pollutants. In recent years, with increasing focus on controlling soil pollution caused by heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), the potential application of biochar has attracted much attention.

Microplastic aging affects the dynamics of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) on microplastics, yet no review presents the effects of microplastic aging on the associated ARGs. This review, therefore, aims to discuss the effects of different types of microplastic aging, as well as the other pollutants on or around microplastics and the chemicals leached from microplastics, on the associated ARGs. It highlights that microplastic photoaging generally results in higher sorption of antibiotics and ARGs due to increased microplastic surface area and functional group changes.

Mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) pose significant risks to human health due to their high toxicity and bioaccumulative properties. This study aimed to develop a novel biochar composite (HMB-S), polyfunctionalized with manganese dioxide (α-MnO) and sulfur functional groups, for the effective immobilization of Hg(II) and Pb(II) from contaminated environments. HMB-S demonstrated superior adsorption capacities of 190.

Excessive nitrogen release during composting poses significant challenges to both the environment and compost quality. Biological enhancement of humification and nitrogen conservation is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach to composting. The aim of this study was to develop a psychrophilic and thermophilic nitrifying bacterial consortium (CNB) and investigate its role in nitrogen transformation and humification during cow manure composting.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an emerging hazardous contaminant, which is ubiquitous in the environment and can cause endocrine disruptor and cancer risks. Therefore, biodegradation of BPA is an essential issue to mitigate the associated human health. In this work, a bacterial strain enables of degrading BPA, named BPA-LRH8 (identified as Xenophilus sp.

The impact of biogas residual biochar (BRB) on the humification and carbon balance process of co-composting of hog slurry (HGS) and wheat straw (WTS) was examined. The 50-day humification process was significantly enhanced by the addition of BRB, particular of 5% BRB, as indicated by the relatively higher humic acid content (67.28 g/kg) and humification ratio (2.

Feature at a Glance: Nonadherence to hypertension medications is associated with negative health outcomes, which is of particular importance for older adults because of the high prevalence of hypertension in this population. To promote medication adherence among this group, we translated a behavioral intervention that improved adherence by 36% into a digital therapeutic self-management system. Design strategies included interviewing older adults, conducting usability evaluations after each iteration, and engaging a team of experts from nursing, cognitive psychology, pharmacy, human factors in aging, and software development.

Purpose: Primary or acquired resistance to cetuximab, an antiepidermal growth factor receptor monoclonal antibody (mAb), minimizes its utility in recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Aberrant hepatocyte growth factor/cMet pathway activation is an established resistance mechanism. Dual pathway targeting may overcome resistance.

Background: Ameloblastoma imposes significant morbidity and high-recurrence rates following surgery and radiation therapy. Although 89% of cases harbor oncogenic mutations, the role of targeted therapy is undefined.
Case: We describe a case of a 40-year-old male with multiply recurrent, locally invasive ameloblastoma of the posterior maxillary ridge.

Consumption of cruciferous vegetables, rich in the isothiocyanate glucoraphanin, is associated with reduced risk of tobacco-related cancers. Sulforaphane, released by hydrolysis of glucoraphanin, potently induces cytoprotective phase II enzymes. Sulforaphane decreased the incidence of oral cancer in the 4NQO carcinogenesis model.

Patients with diabetes with coronary microvascular disease (CMD) exhibit higher cardiac mortality than patients without CMD. However, the molecular mechanism by which diabetes promotes CMD is poorly understood. RNA-binding protein human antigen R (HuR) is a key regulator of mRNA stability and translation; therefore, we investigated the role of HuR in the development of CMD in mice with type 2 diabetes.

Vaginal dysbiosis-induced by an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria is referred to as bacterial vaginosis (BV). The dysbiosis is associated with an increased risk for acquisition of sexually transmitted infections. Women with symptomatic BV are treated with oral metronidazole (MET), but its effectiveness remains to be elucidated.

Objective: Determine modifiable social and psychological health factors that are associated with use of oral opioid and non-opioid medications for OA.
Methods: Patients were categorized based on use of the following oral medications: opioids (with/without other oral analgesic treatments), non-opioid analgesics, and no oral analgesic treatment. We used multinomial logistic regression models to estimate adjusted relative risk ratios (RRRs) of using an opioid or a non-opioid analgesic (vs.

Purpose: Pharmacists' impact in reducing the time interval from intubation to sedative and analgesic use during trauma patient resuscitations is investigated.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a level 1 trauma center to compare medication-use outcomes in consecutive cases in which trauma patients underwent rocuronium-assisted rapid-sequence intubation (RSI) and subsequent sedation and analgesia with or without a pharmacist's participation on the resuscitation team. The primary and secondary outcomes were, respectively, the time to sedative provision and the time to analgesic provision after intubation.
