Silver-Based Chemical Device as an Adjunct of Domestic Oral Hygiene: A Study on Periodontal Patients.

The use of chemical devices for periodontitis treatment has led to new strategies aiming primarily to control infections. Over the last few years, new chemical devices have been subjected to many scientific and medical studies. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect of a new silver based chemical devices gel named "Hydrosilver Plus Gel", abbreviated here as Hydrosilver, on the pathogenic microorganisms, using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for microbiological analysis.

Determinants of maxillary canine impaction: Retrospective clinical and radiographic study.

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate determinants of maxillary canine impaction taking into account both canine position related variables and the pattern of facial growth.

Material And Methods: A retrospective clinical and radiographic analysis was carried out on 109 patients aged between 9 and 10 years at the time of first evaluation. At baseline, SN-GoMe angle, the interincisal angle, the canine angle α and the canine distance d were used to characterize canine location and vertical facial growth.

Background: Children affected by neurodevelopmental disability could experience early pubertal changes at least 20 times more than the general population. Limited data about central precocious puberty (CPP) among children affected by cerebral palsy (CP) are available.

Methods: This is a longitudinal, observational, retrospective, case-control study involving 22 children affected by CPP and CP (group A), 22 paired with CP but without CPP (group B), and 22 children with CPP without CP.

Evidence of impaired microvascular dilatation in preterms with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Background: Evaluating microcirculatory function in severely ill neonates is a relevant, unmet clinical need. Inappropriate peripheral microvascular vasodilatation is thought to contribute to cardiovascular alterations in preterm infants with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We directly evaluated microcirculatory function in preterms with ARDS.

First Italian Consensus Conference on VATS lobectomy for NSCLC.

Purpose: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy has become an accepted procedure for the treatment of selected cases of lung cancer. The aim of this project was to establish national practical recommendations for the management of patients suitable for VATS lobectomy.

Methods: The Scientific Committee of the VATS Lobectomy Group (a branch of the Italian Society of Thoracic Surgery) identified the consensus conference as an appropriate tool for a national debate.

Methods: Schools in seven European countries (n = 143, including 7,079 pupils) were randomly assigned to an experimental condition (Unplugged curriculum) or a control condition (usual health education). Data were collected before (pretest) and 3 months after the end of the program (posttest).

Increased proliferation and apoptosis of colonic epithelial cells in dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in rats.

We have evaluated morphologic alterations and epithelial cell apoptosis and proliferation of colonic mucosa in the acute and chronic phases of DSS-induced colitis. Colitis was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by 7 days of 4% DSS oral administration followed by 7 days of tap water for one, two, and three cycles. Control rats receved tap water only.

Increasing evidence substantiates the view that death is not necessarily the only fate of hypertrophic chondrocytes and that, when exposed to the right microenvironment, these cells can further differentiate to osteoblast-like cells and contribute to initial bone formation. In vitro, when replated as adherent cells in the presence of ascorbic acid, hypertrophic chondrocytes resume cell proliferation, switch from the synthesis of the cartilage-characteristic type II and X collagens to the synthesis of type I collagen, and organize a mineralizing bone matrix. In vivo, expression of bone specific markers by growth plate chondrocytes occurs initially in early hypertrophic cells located at the mid-diaphysis and directly facing the osteogenic perichondrium.

New perspectives in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis: ipriflavone.

Sobrerol in the treatment of secretory otitis media in childhood.

The therapeutic activity and tolerability of sobrerol, a muco-active agent, were evaluated in 30 children (aged 5-10 years) with secretory otitis media. The drug was administered once daily by inhalation for 10 days consecutively at a dose of 40 mg/3 ml. Clinical assessments showed a significant improvement in the objective measures together with good tolerability.

Study of plasma, urine and gastric juice concentrations of famotidine using high performance liquid chromatography.

An improved method for the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination of famotidine, a recently introduced inhibitor of histamine H2-receptors, has been devised. Plasma, urine and gastric juice concentrations of famotidine have been measured in a series of 46 patients hospitalized for gastrointestinal disorders and for other unrelated pathologies, after a single oral dose of 40 mg. Pharmacokinetic data confirmed previously described trends of distribution and metabolism of famotidine, attaining peak plasma levels 1.

Serum beta 2-microglobulin in patients with monoclonal gammopathies.

Beta-2-microglobulin concentrations were determined in serum samples from 45 patients with benign and malignant monoclonal gammopathies. In the group of patients suffering from multiple myeloma or Waldenström macroglobulinemia the mean beta 2-microglobulin level was significantly higher than in the group with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. Values above 3 mg/L were highly indicative of a neoplastic process and were observed in all the Waldenström patients and in greater than 90% of myeloma patients.
