Department of Neurological Surgery, UCSF, San Francisco, CA, United States of America.

Experimental rat models of stroke and hemorrhage are important tools to investigate cerebrovascular disease pathophysiology mechanisms, yet how significant patterns of functional impairment induced in various models of stroke are related to changes in connectivity at the level of neuronal populations and mesoscopic parcellations of rat brains remain unresolved. To address this gap in knowledge, we employed two middle cerebral artery occlusion models and one intracerebral hemorrhage model with variant extent and location of neuronal dysfunction. Motor and spatial memory function was assessed and the level of hippocampal activation via Fos immunohistochemistry.

December 2024

Institute of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Centre for Integrative Psychiatry, School of Medicine, University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein- Campus Kiel, Kiel, Germany.

Children and adults have been shown to benefit from sleep with regard to the consolidation of declarative memories. Especially during childhood, the generalisation of information from social and non-social contexts is important for adaptable behaviour in new situations and might show specific features in children. Here, we investigated whether adults (n = 18) and children (n = 19) differ in their generalisation of features assessed in wake and sleep conditions.

It's about timing: how density can benefit future research on the optimal dosage of acute physical exercise breaks in esports.

BMJ Open Sport Exerc Med

October 2024

Faculty of Health Sciences Brandenburg, Research Group Degenerative and Chronic Diseases, Movement, University of Potsdam, Potsdam, Germany.

In recent years, organised and competitive video gaming, esports, has gained enormous popularity in many parts of the world, contributing to the growing professionalisation of this sports branch. To become or remain a professional esports player, individuals practice video gaming for several hours a day while remaining in a sitting posture which may not only lead to a decrease in training quality in the short term (eg, due to cognitive fatigue) but also put them at a higher risk for negative health events in the long-term (eg, overuse injuries). Thus, interrupting periods of prolonged video gaming in a sitting posture with acute physical exercise is strongly recommended for esports players even though the optimal dosage of acute physical exercise breaks remains unclear.

Two-pore domain K (K) channel activity was previously thought to be controlled primarily via a selectivity filter (SF) gate. However, recent crystal structures of TASK-1 and TASK-2 revealed a lower gate at the cytoplasmic pore entrance. Here, we report functional evidence of such a lower gate in the K channel K2P17.

Division of Pediatric Neurology and Metabolic Medicine, Department I, Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Medical Faculty Heidelberg, University Hospital Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.

Brain organoids represent a useful tool for modeling of neurodevelopmental disorders and can recapitulate brain volume alterations such as microcephaly. To monitor organoid growth, brightfield microscopy images are frequently used and evaluated manually which is time-consuming and prone to observer-bias. Recent software applications for organoid evaluation address this issue using classical or AI-based methods.

Most cancer patients ultimately die from the consequences of distant metastases. As metastasis formation consumes energy mitochondria play an important role during this process as they are the most important cellular organelle to synthesise the energy rich substrate ATP, which provides the necessary energy to enable distant metastasis formation. However, mitochondria are also important for the execution of apoptosis, a process which limits metastasis formation.

Dissociative identity disorder is the most severe of the dissociative disorders and neither the trauma model nor the sociocognitive model provide a satisfactory account of its complexity. Transtheoretical models propose an interaction of traumatic experiences as well as cultural, cognitive, and social factors in the development of the disorder. This perspective has important implications for the treatment which should encompass a reprocessing of traumatic memories, emotional regulation skills, and a modification of dysfunctional beliefs about memory.
