In this study, we investigated the influence of parental sensitivity and family alliance on infants' vagal tone, considered as a physiological indicator of emotion regulation. Studies on mother-infant interactions have shown that vagal tone can be influenced by the quality of the interaction, such as interacting with a sensitive mother. To date, no study has investigated the influence of paternal sensitivity or family alliance on infants' vagal tone.

The aim of this prospective pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of a new hybrid imaging modality, free-hand single-photon computed tomography/ultrasonography (fhSPECT/US), for preoperative localization of parathyroid adenomas and to compare its performance with conventional ultrasonography and SPECT/CT. Twelve patients diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism underwent sequentially US and parathyroid scintigraphy, including SPECT/CT, followed by fhSPECT/US, allowing for real-time fusion between US and freehand-generated gamma-camera images. The fhSPECT/US detection rates were correlated with histopathology, when available, or with the imaging modality showing the most lesions.

Resistance to synthetic antifungals has become one of the leading public health challenges around the world. Accordingly, novel antifungal products like naturally occurring molecules can be one of the potential ways to reach efficient curative approaches to control candidiasis. This work evaluated the effect of menthol on cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH), biofilm formation, growth, and ergosterol content of Candida glabrata, a yeast with a high resistance against antifungal agents.

The development of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has revolutionized cancer therapy but only a fraction of patients benefits from this therapy. Model-informed drug development can be used to assess prognostic and predictive clinical factors or biomarkers associated with treatment response. Most pharmacometric models have thus far been developed using data from randomized clinical trials, and further studies are needed to translate their findings into the real-world setting.

Background: Gastric cancer has been recognized as the second most probable cause of death in humans from cancer diseases around the world. Postbiotics, supernatant, and metabolites from probiotic microorganisms have recently been used widely to prevent and treat cancer diseases in humans, without any undesirable side effects. This study explores the antiproliferative and antitumor activities of the probiotic var.

Purpose: A semiautomated pipeline for the collection and curation of free-text and imaging real-world data (RWD) was developed to quantify cancer treatment outcomes in large-scale retrospective real-world studies. The objectives of this article are to illustrate the challenges of RWD extraction, to demonstrate approaches for quality assurance, and to showcase the potential of RWD for precision oncology.
Methods: We collected data from patients with advanced melanoma receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors at the Lausanne University Hospital.

In the context of the global health issue caused by the growing occurrence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the need for novel antimicrobial agents is becoming alarming. Inorganic and organometallic complexes represent a relatively untapped source of antibiotics. Here, we report a computer-aided drug design (CADD) based on a 'scaffold-hopping' approach for the synthesis and antibacterial evaluation of -Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes bearing clotrimazole (ctz) as a monodentate ligand.

We explored structural brain connectomes in children with spastic unilateral cerebral palsy (uCP) and its relation to sensory-motor function using graph theory. In 46 children with uCP (mean age = 10 years 7 months ± 2 years 9 months; Manual Ability Classification System I = 15, II = 16, III = 15) we assessed upper limb somatosensory and motor function. We collected multi-shell diffusion-weighted, T1-weighted and T2-FLAIR MRI and identified the corticospinal tract (CST) wiring pattern using transcranial magnetic stimulation.

: Bromelain and ficin are aqueous extracts from fruits of and plants, used widely for medical applications. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a homolog of ACE, degrading Ang II to angiotensin 1-7 and decreasing the cellular concentration of Ang II. : In this study, we investigated the ACE2-inhibitory, antiproliferative, and apoptosis-inducing effects of ficin and bromelain on caco-2 cells.

Immunoaffinity-based liquid biopsies of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) hold great promise for cancer management but typically suffer from low throughput, relative complexity, and postprocessing limitations. Here, we address these issues simultaneously by decoupling and independently optimizing the nano-, micro-, and macro-scales of an enrichment device that is simple to fabricate and operate. Unlike other affinity-based devices, our scalable mesh approach enables optimum capture conditions at any flow rate, as demonstrated with constant capture efficiencies, above 75% between 50 and 200 μL min.

species are the main cause of bacillary diarrhoea or shigellosis in humans. These organisms are the inhabitants of the human intestinal tract; however, they are one of the main concerns in public health in both developed and developing countries. In this study, we reviewed and summarised the previous studies and recent advances in molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis of Dysenteriae and non-Dysenteriae species.

Muscle synergy analysis investigates the neurophysiological mechanisms that the central nervous system employs to coordinate muscles. Several models have been developed to decompose electromyographic (EMG) signals into spatial and temporal synergies. However, using multiple approaches can complicate the interpretation of results.

Computational pathology targets the automatic analysis of Whole Slide Images (WSI). WSIs are high-resolution digitized histopathology images, stained with chemical reagents to highlight specific tissue structures and scanned via whole slide scanners. The application of different parameters during WSI acquisition may lead to stain color heterogeneity, especially considering samples collected from several medical centers.

This paper introduces a titanium-based planar ultrasonic microscalpel. The concept of silicon-based planar ultrasonic transducers has already been proven, but they are not yet suitable for clinical use due to material failure. The main objective of this work was to develop a smaller, lighter, and more cost-effective ultrasonic scalpel that could be used as an alternative or supplementary device to current surgical instruments.

Several challenges prevent extracting knowledge from biomedical resources, including data heterogeneity and the difficulty to obtain and collaborate on data and annotations by medical doctors. Therefore, flexibility in their representation and interconnection is required; it is also essential to be able to interact easily with such data. In recent years, semantic tools have been developed: semantic wikis are collections of wiki pages that can be annotated with properties and so combine flexibility and expressiveness, two desirable aspects when modeling databases, especially in the dynamic biomedical domain.

serogroup O157 is the main causative agent of several intestinal and extra-intestinal foodborne diseases in humans through consumption of low-dose contaminated foods such as milk, beef, and vegetables. To date, studies regarding the quantitative prevalence of O157 in foods are so limited. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the quantitative prevalence rate of serogroup O157 in raw milk ( = 144), vegetable salad ( = 174), and minced beef samples ( = 108) using the real-time qPCR SYBR green melting curve method targeting the gene.

Objective: The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of PICO (participants, interventions, comparators, outcomes) entity extraction using weak supervision and natural language processing.
Methodology: We re-purpose more than 127 medical and nonmedical ontologies and expert-generated rules to obtain multiple noisy labels for PICO entities in the evidence-based medicine (EBM)-PICO corpus. These noisy labels are aggregated using simple majority voting and generative modeling to get consensus labels.

Long-term care (LTC) is not only a concern for elderly individuals but also for their adult children, as the latter often provide financial support and informal care to their elderly dependents. Adult children may therefore have strong incentives to have their parents purchase LTC insurance. Using data from a 2019 Swiss survey, this article first identifies a set of variables, including self-reported interest about LTC insurance, whether elderly parents live with their children and if the latter have provided informal help with personal care, which help predict the interest of adult children in having their parents covered against LTC risk.
