Threads of modern pedicle screws can vary greatly in design. It is difficult to assess which interplay of design features is particularly advantageous for screw anchorage. This study aims to increase the understanding of the anchorage behaviour between screw and cancellous bone.

Insertion and pull-out tests of synthetic test material are well established for the initial laboratory evaluation of screws. However, not all test parameters are sufficiently described. The influence of small density deviations of the test material, of tapping or of manual or machine insertion has not been fully examined.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on developing hybrid glass scaffolds that release calcium to enhance integration into bone tissue while maintaining mechanical strength.
  • Various calcium sources, including CaCl and bioactive glass microparticles, were tested for their release profiles; lower CaCl concentrations showed more controlled release, while BG-MP provided a linear release over 12 weeks.
  • In cell culture tests with osteoblast-like cells, the integration of these calcium sources did not significantly improve osteogenic differentiation, possibly due to the consumption of released calcium ions by formed mineral layers.

Pedicle screw loosening is still observed in clinical practice. Therefore, the understanding of the interaction between screw and bone is evermore subject of research. However, complex relationships between screw design and anchorage are rarely examined.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) consists of short intervals of exercise at high intensity intermitted by intervals of lower intensity and is associated with improvement of body composition and metabolic health in adults. Studies in overweight adolescents are scarce. We conducted a randomized controlled trial in overweight adolescents to compare acceptance and attendance of HIIT with or without weekly motivational encouragement through text messages and access to a study website.

The dataset includes responses from a contingent valuation study about the national climate change mitigation policies in Germany. The online survey was carried out in the spring of 2014. It assesses the willingness to pay for an increase of the national CO2 reduction target by 10 percentage points, which closely represents Germany׳s climate change mitigation strategy.

Innovation Center Computer Assisted Surgery, Universität Leipzig, Faculty of Medicine, Semmelweisstraße 14, Haus 14, 04103 Leipzig, Germany; Klinik und Poliklinik für Neurochirurgie, Universitätsklinikum Leipzig AöR, Liebigstraße 20, Haus 4, 04103 Leipzig, Germany.

Objective: New technologies improve modern medicine, but may result in unwanted consequences. Some occur due to inadequate human-computer-interactions (HCI). To assess these consequences, an investigation model was developed to facilitate the planning, implementation and documentation of studies for HCI in surgery.

Background: Traditional secondary prevention programs often fail to produce sustainable behavioral changes in everyday life. Peer-modeling interventions and integration of peer experiences in health education are a promising way to improve long-term effects in behavior modification. However, effects of peer support modeling on behavioral change have not been evaluated yet.

Design and evaluation of a multimedia electronic patient record "oncoflow" with clinical workflow assistance for head and neck tumor therapy.

November 2014

Innovation Center Computer Assisted Surgery (ICCAS), Universität Leipzig, Semmelweisstrasse 14, 04103 , Leipzig, Germany.

Objectives: The management of patient-specific information is a challenging task for surgeons and physicians because existing clinical information systems are insufficiently integrated into daily clinical routine and contained information entities are distributed across different proprietary databases. Thus, existing information is hardly usable for further electronic processing, workflow support or clinical studies.

Methods: A Web-based clinical information system has been developed that automatically imports patient-specific information from different information systems.

Objective: General self-efficacy has been found to be an influential variable related to the adaptation to stress and chronic illness, with the General Self-Efficacy (GSE) Scale by Jerusalem and Schwarzer being a reliable and valid instrument to assess this disposition. The aim of this study was to construct and test a short form of this scale to allow for a more economical assessment of the construct.

Methods: The item characteristics of the original scale were assessed using an intercultural non-clinical sample (n=19,719).

To reduce the risk of application error, the federal legislator has demanded a development process which is oriented towards usability (DIN EN 62366). Therefore, the research question concerns the application of this standard by medical device manufacturers. Questionnaires were filled out by five trained interviewers in fully standardized face-to-face interviews at MEDICA Düsseldorf 2010.

Objective: The aim of the study was to systematically analyze the stability of Type-D personality over a time span of several years in a clinical sample.

Methods: In a prospective cohort study, cardiac patients from different medical settings in Germany were assessed using the DS14 questionnaire at baseline (n=1240) and at a mean follow-up time of six years (n=679). Different types of stability were examined and compared with the stability of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).

Background: Depression is associated with a negative prognosis in coronary heart disease and heart failure patients. Type D personality has been shown to predict the persistence of depressive symptoms over 12 months. Data on longer follow-up periods and on the effectiveness of Type D as a screening tool compared to established measures of depressive symptoms are missing.
