This paper reports on the amperometric detection of electroinactive sulfonic acids, organic acids and phosphate esters subsequent to chromatographic separation. The working electrode consisted of a 3 mm diameter glassy carbon electrode, coated with electrochemically deposited polypyrrole. The electrode was placed in a large volume wall jet cell, and a potential of +750 mV versus SCE was applied.

Potentiometric detection with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) based liquid membrane electrode coatings is presented for a series of eighteen beta-adrenoceptor binding drugs (five agonists and thirteen antagonists) in cation exchange-HPLC and RP-HPLC systems. Incorporation of lipophilic cation-exchanger tetrakis(p-chlorophenyl)borate (TCPB) alone or in combination with trioctylated alpha-cyclodextrin into the polymeric liquid membrane gives very sensitive responses for racemic forms of bufuralol, propranolol, carazolol, clenbuterol, mabuterol, cimaterol, bisoprolol, oxprenolol, alprenolol, tertatolol, and bevantolol, especially in the cation-exchange HPLC system applying acetonitrile -- 40 mM phosphoric acid (15: 85, v/v, pH* = 2.35) as the mobile phase.

Damselfly larvae can autotomize their caudal lamellae to escape predation. Costs of caudal lamellae autotomy were investigated by directly manipulating lamellae condition of Lestes sponsa in laboratory experiments. Larvae without lamellae had higher predation mortality in the presence of Notonecta.

The diastolic depolarization rate of isolated sheep Purkinje fibres was reduced in the presence of micromolar concentrations of the 'specific bradycardic agent' falipamil (AQ-A39) and its congener UL-FS49. Both drugs reduced the amount of pacemaker current, if, activated during the diastolic depolarization phase. The if activation curve was reduced in amplitude but not shifted.
