The number of pathogens involved in community-acquired pneumonia, with varying susceptibilities to antimicrobials, is numerous constituting an enormous challenge for diagnostic microbiology. Differentiation of infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae and those due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, or L. pneumophila as well as those due to viruses is essential to allow correct decisions concerning the antibiotics to be administered.

The destruction of cartilage is an important characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Immune complexes (IC) are usually found in high amounts in RA synovial fluids (SF) and in the superficial layers of RA cartilage. The objective of this study was to investigate if IC have a direct influence on proliferation, survival and production of nitric oxide (NO) of cytokine-activated chondrocytes.

A 71-year-old patient was referred for suspected hyperthyroidism because of a 15-kg weight loss, suppressed thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and a 4-cm nodule in the left thyroid lobe. Both free T4 and T3 were normal. Antithyroglobulin, anti-TSH receptor and antimicrosomal antibodies were absent.

Anurans use a saltatorial (jumping) mode of locomotion. A jumping cycle can be divided into four subphases: propulsion, flight, landing and recovery. We studied the landing phase during locomotion in Rana esculenta by measuring the ground reaction forces during propulsion and landing over a range of distances.

Gemcitabine has excellent radiosensitizing properties, as shown in both preclinical and clinical studies. Radiosensitization correlated with the early S-phase block of gemcitabine. In the present study, we investigated the role of TP53 in the radiosensitizing effect of gemcitabine.

Feeding specializations such as herbivory are an often cited example of convergent and adaptive evolution. However, some groups such as lizards appear constrained in the evolution of morphological specializations associated with specialized diets. Here we examine whether the inclusion of plant matter into the diet of omnivorous lacertid lizards has resulted in morphological specializations and whether these specializations reflect biomechanical compromises as expected if omnivores are constrained by functional trade-offs.

To date, nine progressive neurodegenerative diseases are caused by expansion of the CAG repeat coding for polyglutamine, including Huntington's disease and several forms of spinocerebellar ataxia. Expanded polyglutamine causes dominant toxic gain-of-function related to its ability to aggregate. Polyglutamine aggregates inhibit the proteasome, suggesting that reduced degradation of misfolded proteins might contribute to polyglutamine toxicity.

Increasing amounts of data suggest that affective disorders might be related to dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, one of the stress-response systems. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) influences several symptoms, relevant to affective disorders, notable memory processes, pain sensitivity, synchronization of biological rhythms and the timing and quality of REM sleep. We examined whether genetic variations in the AVP receptor 1b gene (AVPR1b) could be associated with increased susceptibility to affective disorders using a gene-based association analysis of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

Rooted cuttings of poplar (Populus nigra) and seedlings of beech (Fagus sylvatica) were exposed to ozone in open-top chambers for one growing season. Three treatments were applied: charcoal-filtered (CF), non-filtered (NF) and non-filtered air plus 30 ppb (nl l(-1)) ozone (NF+). Extra ozone was only added on clear days, from 09:00 until 17:00-20:00.

Objective: The increase in adhesion molecule expression during the initial phase of inflammation leads to transmigration of neutrophils. Inhibition of this transmigration could decrease inflammatory response and tissue damage.
Materials And Methods: Uptake of fluorescein-labelled oligonucleotides, expression of ICAM-1 and neutrophil migration were studied using the bilayer of epithelial (H292) and endothelial (ECV-304) cell lines and neutrophils from peripheral blood of healthy volunteers.

Panic disorder (PD) is a highly prevalent, debilitating disorder. The heritability of the disease has been estimated by twin studies to be between 30 and 60%. The vulnerability for PD overlaps with an increased risk of bipolar disorder in some families.

Neuronal network behaviors emerge from complex interactions between excitatory relay cells, principal cells and inhibitory interneurons. Therefore, characterizing homogeneous cell types and their properties is an essential step towards understanding information processing in the brain. The cerebellar cortex is generally described as a repetitive circuit composed of only five cell types.

Ecteinascidin 743 (ET-743) is a new marine-derived agent with promising activity against a number of solid tumours. In four human tumour cell lines, the interaction between ET-743 and radiation was investigated in relation to the effects of ET-743 on the cell cycle, in vitro. Cell survival was measured based on quantitative staining of cellular protein by sulforhodamine B.

In this paper we report the systematic search for new, potent, and selective DPP II inhibitors. A study of the structure-activity relationship was conducted starting from aminoacyl pyrrolidides as lead compounds. Rational exploration of the P(1) and P(2) building blocks led to the discovery of some very potent DPP II inhibitors which can be characterized by their high selectivity for DPP II with regard to DPP IV.

Animals have to modulate their locomotor behavior according to changes in external circumstances. The locomotor requirements are expected to be most extreme for species that move through different physical environments, such as water versus land. In this study, we examine the use of the propulsive impulse as a covariate in the comparison of the kinematics of locomotion of a semi-aquatic frog Rana esculenta, across land and through water.

Purpose: The mechanism of radiosensitization by gemcitabine is still unclear. It has been hypothesized that the accumulation of cells in early S phase may play a role in enhancing radiosensitivity.
Methods And Materials: The schedule dependency of the radiosensitizing effect was studied in ECV304, human bladder cancer cells, and H292, human lung cancer cells, by varying the incubation time and time interval between gemcitabine and radiation treatment.

Mutations in the ganglioside-induced differentiation-associated protein 1 gene cause either autosomal recessive demyelinating Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4A or autosomal recessive axonal Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease with vocal cord paresis. We sequenced the ganglioside-induced differentiation-associated protein 1 gene in 138 patients from 119 unrelated families diagnosed with either demyelinating or axonal autosomal recessive Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. We detected six distinct mutant alleles in four families, four of which are novel.

This paper illustrates how simple mechanical models based on morphological, ethological, ecological and phylogenetic data can add to discussions in evolutionary biology. Bipedal locomotion has evolved on numerous occasions in lizards. Traits that appear repeatedly in independent evolutionary lines are often considered adaptive, but the exact advantages of bipedal locomotion in lizards remain debated.

Neutrophil infiltration to the airway lumen is a common feature of respiratory inflammatory processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether different corticosteroids exert any selective effect on the migration of isolated neutrophils. A bilayer of cultured human endothelial and bronchial epithelial cells was used as a model for neutrophil migration through the blood-air barrier.

For centuries, scientists are intrigued by the differences in personality between individuals. As early as in the ancient Greek civilization, people tried to formulate theories to systematize this diversity. With the increased interest in behavior genetics, personality was also considered a challenging phenotype.
