We report on a fetus with multiple pterygia in the popliteal, antecubital, intercrural, axillary, and nuchal region, arthrogryposis, camptodactyly, anal atresia, hypospadias, ambiguous genitalia, and neonatal death. Arthrogryposis was much more pronounced at the left than at the right side. Moreover, there was gross body asymmetry with hypoplasia of the left arm, leg, pelvis, and kidney.

The presence of p53 protein in non-neoplastic pleural mesothelium (40 cases) and in human malignant mesothelioma (36 cases) was assessed immunohistochemically using the antibodies DO7, CM-1, and PAb240. We describe two female siblings with similar clinical features consisting of hydrocephalus, scaphocephaly, hypotonia, mongoloid eye slant, blepharophimosis, micrognathia, supernumerary mouth frenula and mental retardation. Routine cytogenetic studies in the elder patient did not reveal any abnormality, and initially it was assumed that the syndrome had an autosomal recessive inheritance. However, a slightly larger chromosome 13 was seen in routine G-banded metaphases of the mother and the youngest of the two siblings.

Peptides were extracted from the lysate of isolated bovine chromaffin granules. Following reversed-phase HPLC purification, the fractions were analyzed by FAB/MS. To investigate the possible effect of the dosing scheme of aminoglycosides on their concentration in the cochlear tissue, we gave two groups of 12 guinea pigs subcutaneous doses of 45 mg of isepamicin (ca. 30 mg of active product) per kg of body weight daily for eight consecutive days. The first group received the drug by continuous infusion, while the second group received it by single daily injection.

Fryns syndrome without diaphragmatic hernia?

We report on a child with Fryns syndrome including lung hypoplasia, characteristic facial appearance, cleft palate, cardiac anomaly, distal limb abnormalities, absent nipples, bicornuate uterus and early death. In contrast to most patients with Fryns syndrome, diaphragmatic hernia was absent in our patient. However, the diaphragm was reduced to a fibrous web with reduced muscular component.

Cloning and sequencing of the CF gene has identified a three-base-pair deletion (delta F508) responsible for CF in the majority of CF patients (Kerem et al. 1989). The four major C-glycosidic flavonoids isolated from Passiflora incarnata were identified as schaftoside, isoschaftoside, isovetexin-2''-O-glucopyranoside and isoorientin-2''-O-glucopyranoside on the basis of mass spectral and 13C NMR data. The daughter ion spectra of [M + H]+ ions of schaftoside and isoschaftoside showed differences for the [M + H - 104]+ ions, which could be rationalized by hydrogen bonding effects. In the negative-ion mode, pronounced differences were found for the [M - H - 90]- and [M - H - 120]- ions, formed by prevalent fragmentation in the C-6-linked sugar moiety.

Fucosidosis is a rare, autosomal recessive, lysosomal storage disorder caused by a severe deficiency of alpha-L-fucosidase in all tissues. We have conducted a review of fucosidosis, compiling data from published reports and an international questionnaire survey. Seventy-seven patients affected with fucosidosis of which 19 had not been reported before have been identified.

Repeated intraperitoneal injections of lead acetate in rats caused a calcification of the skin of the abdomen near the site of the injections. The quantitative analytical characteristics of a camera-based detection system for secondary ion microscopy are studied in detail. Through multiple exposures, ion images with large dynamic ranges are obtained. The quantification of these images by the sensitivity factor method and the matrix ion species ratio method is described and evaluated by the analysis of steel and aluminum standard reference materials.

We studied, in the field and laboratory, aspects of the thermal biology in two populations of the lizard Podarcis tiliguerta along a 1450 m altitudinal gradient. Body temperatures (T) at high altitudes average lower, are more variable, but are more elevated above environmental temperatures than at sea level. Lizards partially reduced the impact of altitudinal changes in thermal loads through presumable subtle behavioural adjustments.

Various potable water and soil samples have been analyzed for tri- and dialkyllead compounds using a sensitive speciation procedure based on diethyldithiocarbamate extraction, Grignard derivatization and gas chromatography-atomic absorption spectrometry. The species are generally present as ultra-trace contaminants, and their abundance is critically discussed. In addition, a degradation study of ionic alkyllead in ambient matrices is presented.

A histological study was done on the thin, nearly transparent replacement membrane of tympanic membrane perforations. Human tympanic membranes that were rejected for transplantation, were studied by light and electron microscopy. The abrupt reduction in thickness at the margin of the covered perforation, is entirely due to the reduction of the lamina propria.

Propylene glycol-induced side effects during intravenous nitroglycerin therapy.

Propylene glycol, an alcohol frequently used as a solvent in medical preparations, is considered non-toxic. We found that this solvent, used in a commercially available IV nitroglycerin solution, may cause hyperosmolality, hemolysis and lactic acidosis. The influence of kidney function as the main determinant in causing accumulation of this solvent and consequently hyperosmolality is emphasized.

The breakdown voltage has been found to be dependent on the gap width between the electrodes and on the melting point of the sample elements in spark-source mass-spectrometry (SSMS). The number of discharges per pulse train and the time required to reach the first discharge depend only on the chosen breakdown voltage. The spark gap is proportional to the "radius" of the volume sampled (for a given element) and this radius is linearly related to the reciprocal of the melting point of the elements (23 different elements, metals or semiconductors), when fixed spark-parameters are used.

Two common procedures for wet destruction of biological materials for subsequent determination of selenium have been investigated. Rat organs and biological fluids were endogenously labelled with (75)Se to monitor losses during the procedures. Addition of nitric and perchloric acids with gradual heating up to 210 degrees seemed to be the best method: at this temperature the labelled selenium was still recovered quantitatively, and the destruction was fast and efficient.
