Failure to follow asthma management guidelines may result in poor asthma control for many patients. The Asthma Insights and Reality in Europe (AIRE) survey, a multi-national survey assessing the level of asthma control from the patients perspective in seven Western European countries, previously demonstrated that the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guideline goals were not achieved in Western Europe and that both adults and children with asthma were poorly controlled. Using additional data on asthma management practices from each of the seven countries in the AIRE survey, we compared variations in asthma morbidity and asthma management practices across countries to provide insight into the reasons for poor asthma control.

An improved analytical method was developed and validated for the determination of the monosaccharide anhydrides levoglucosan, mannosan, and galactosan in atmospheric aerosol samples. The method uses an external recovery standard, extraction in dichloromethane, trimethylsilylation, addition of an internal standard (1-phenyl dodecane), and analysis by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). As external recovery standard, we selected 1,2,3-trihydroxyhexane, which has a similar polarity as the monosaccharide anhydrides; furthermore, it was ensured that the trimethylsilylation step leads to complete derivatization into trimethylsilyl ethers.

January 2002

Department of Chemistry, University of Antwerp (UIA), Universiteitsplein 1, B-2610 Wilrijk-Antwerp, Belgium.

A one-dimensional self-consistent particle in cell/Monte Carlo method is used to study the local (at the laser impact region) and fast relaxation phenomena after laser-induced photodetachment in a strongly electronegative SiH(4)/H(2) rf discharge. The relaxation process of the local densities of the charged plasma species has been studied in association with the time evolution of the local electric field. The phenomena predicted theoretically about the relaxation processes, such as the potential well, the electrostatic oscillation, the long lasting potential structure, the distortion of the early potential perturbation on the measurement of negative ion temperature, and the depression in the positive ion density profile at the edges of the laser impact region, have been confirmed by our simulation results.

How to express pharmacological contractions of the inflamed rat intestine.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

December 2001

Division of Gastroenterology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Antwerp (UIA), Wilrijk, Belgium.

Inflammation leads to intestinal dysmotility which can be due to both functional and trophic alterations of the neuromuscular apparatus. To discriminate between trophic and functional changes, several normalization procedures are used in contractility studies. It is important to know how normalization procedures may influence the obtained results.

Cuttings of the non-rooting rac tobacco mutant overaccumulate phenolic compounds.

Funct Plant Biol

January 2002

Biologie Moléculaire et Hormonologie Végétales, Institute of Botany B 22, University of Liège-Sart Tilman, BE4000 Liège, Belgium.

The auxin and phenolic contents, as well as phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity, were determined in in vitro cultured shoots of the recalcitrant-to-root rac mutant of tobacco, and compared with wild-type shoots. The mutant and wild-type shoots showed similar auxin changes during the culture cycle, but with higher contents for the mutant. A transient peak of auxin (corresponding to the achievement of the rooting inductive phase) occurred at day 14 in both types of shoots, but earlier in the basal parts of the wild-type stems.

Functional implications of supercontracting muscle in the chameleon tongue retractors.

J Exp Biol

November 2001

Laboratory of Functional Morphology, Biology Department, University of Antwerp (UIA), Universiteitsplein 1, B-2610 Antwerp, Belgium.

Chameleons capture prey items using a ballistic tongue projection mechanism that is unique among lizards. During prey capture, the tongue can be projected up to two full body lengths and may extend up to 600 % of its resting length. Being ambush predators, chameleons eat infrequently and take relatively large prey.

Trinucleotide repeat expansions: do they contribute to bipolar disorder?

Brain Res Bull

February 2002

Department of Molecular Genetics, Flanders Interuniversity Institute for Biotechnology (VIB), University of Antwerp (UIA), Antwerpen, Belgium.

It has long been known that bipolar disorder has a true but complex genetic background. Reports on genetic anticipation in bipolar disorder opened the way to a new approach for genetic studies. Indeed, anticipation, a decreasing age at onset, and/or increasing disease severity in successive generations, were recently explained by an expansion of trinucleotide repeats in monogenic diseases like Huntington's disease and Fragile X syndrome.

The soluble protein fraction of tobacco bright yellow 2 cells contained adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP)-binding activity, detected with both a conventional binding assay and a surface plasmon resonance biosensor. A cAMP-agarose-based affinity purification procedure yielded three proteins which were identified by mass spectrometry as glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and two nucleoside diphosphate kinases (NDPKs). This is the first report describing an interaction between cAMP and these proteins in higher plants.

December 2001

University of Antwerp (UIA), Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiteitsplein 1, B-2610 Antwerp, Belgium.

Tandem mass spectrometric methods have been evaluated for the characterisation of the type and the differentiation of the interglycosidic linkage of isomeric flavonoid O-diglycosides. Based on the occurrence of internal monosaccharide residue loss and the relative abundances of Y-type ions formed by fragmentation at glycosidic bonds, four pairs of isomeric flavonoid O-diglycosides can be unambiguously differentiated. The different techniques used, i.

Background: Many studies have reported an increase in the occurrence of asthma and respiratory allergies in recent decades, but this increase is mostly based on studies using rather subjective measurements of asthma and allergies, such as questionnaires and doctor's diagnosis. None of the reviews specifically focused on studies using more 'objective' measurements, such as sensitization (specific IgE or skin prick testing (SPT)), bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR) or lung function (LF).

Objective: To review articles studying a time trend of occurrence of these 'more objective' measurements.

Ion fluxes, auxin and the induction of elongation growth in Nicotiana tabacum cells.

J Exp Bot

November 2001

Department of Biology, Plant Physiology/Morphology, University of Antwerp (UIA), Universiteitsplein 1, B-2610 Wilrijk, Belgium.

Immobilized cultured tobacco cells become polarized upon the addition of naphthalene-1-acetic acid and start to elongate from an initial spherical shape. The question as to how a diffuse-growing cell forms a polar axis is addressed here with approaches successfully applied to the study of tip growth. With two kinds of vibrating probes the electric current flow and proton fluxes were mapped around such elongating cells.

During intestinal inflammation, motility disturbances are not restricted to inflamed regions, but may also occur in remote non-inflamed sites of the gastrointestinal tract. Our aim was to investigate the motor function of the gastric fundus after the induction of terminal ileitis in the rat. Ileal inflammation was induced by intraluminal installation of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulphonic acid (TNBS) into the ileum.

In vitro availability of zinc from infant foods with increasing phytic acid contents.

Br J Nutr

August 2001

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Laboratory of Food Sciences, University of Antwerp (UIA), Universiteitsplein 1, 2610 Antwerp (Wilrijk), Belgium.

An in vitro method was used to determine the availability of Zn from infant foods containing increasing amounts of phytate, and to quantify the effect of the phytate:Zn molar ratio on the availability. During the in vitro assay, digestive conditions of infants, younger and older than 4 months of age, were carefully simulated since the solubility of phytate-Zn complexes during digestion is pH dependent. Availability was measured with a continuous flow dialysis in vitro procedure with previous intralumen digestive stage.

The application of inductively coupled plasma--time-of-flight mass spectrometry for the speciation analysis of organolead compounds in environmental waters is described. Construction of the transfer line was achieved by means of a relatively simple and rapid coupling procedure. Derivatization of the ionic lead species was achieved by in-situ propylation with sodium tetrapropylborate; simultaneous extraction of the derivatized compounds in hexane was followed by separation and detection by capillary gas chromatography hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma-time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

The many faces of human prion diseases in Belgium and the world.

Acta Neurol Belg

June 2001

Laboratory of Neurobiology, Born Bunge Foundation, University of Antwerp (UIA), Antwerp, Belgium.

Prion diseases are rare neurodegenerative disorders that always lead to death and that can be transmissible under certain conditions. Although sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob's disease (CJD) is the best known human variant of these transmissible spongiform encephalopathies with an incidence of about 1 in 106 inhabitants, several other types of human prion disease have been described (e.g.
