Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the result of genetic and environmental interaction that conditions the integrity of the heart and blood vessels. Risk factors include infections. The inflammatory response against the infectious agent is a trigger of autoimmune cardiovascular diseases due to the similarity between the pathogen proteins and human antigens, since the immune response can present cross-reactivity caused by molecular mimicry.

Objective: Identify molecular mimicry between TPO, eosinophil peroxidase (EPX), thyroglobulin and IL24 and microorganism antigens.

Methods: Through in silico analysis, we performed local alignments between human and microorganism antigens with PSI-BLAST. Proteins that did not present a 3D structure were modeled by homology through the Swiss Modeller server and epitope prediction was performed through Ellipro.

Introduction: Increased antimicrobial use during the COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns about the spread of resistant bacteria. This study analyzed the frequency of device-associated infections (DAI) caused by resistant bacteria, the predictors of these infections, and 30-day all-cause mortality in patients with and without COVID-19.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on DAI patients admitted to the ICU (intensive care unit) in 20 hospitals in Medellin, Colombia (2020-2021).

Antibiofilm and Immune-Modulatory Activity of Cannabidiol and Cannabigerol in Oral Environments-In Vitro Study.

Antibiotics (Basel)

April 2024

Centro de Investigaciones Odontológicas, Departamento del Sistema Periodontal, Facultad de Odontología, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá 110231, Colombia.

Aim: Sex-differences in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) are important, but key mechanisms involved are incompletely understood. While animal models can inform about sex-dependent cellular and molecular changes, many previous preclinical HFpEF models have failed to recapitulate sex-dependent characteristics of human HFpEF. We tested for sex-differences in HFpEF using a two-hit mouse model (leptin receptor-deficient db/db mice plus aldosterone infusion for 4 weeks; db/db+Aldo).

Prospective study of malaria in pregnancy, placental and congenital malaria in Northwest Colombia.

Malar J

April 2024

School of Medicine, University of Antioquia UdeA., Research Group Coordinator "Salud y Comunidad-César Uribe Piedrahíta", Medellín, Colombia.

Background: Pregnancy Associated Malaria (PAM) include malaria in pregnancy (MiP), placental malaria (PM), and congenital malaria (CM). The evidence available in Colombia on PAM focuses on one of the presentations (MiP, PM or CM), and no study longitudinally analyses the infection from the pregnant woman, passing through the placenta, until culminating in the newborn. This study determined the frequency of MiP, PM, and CM caused by Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium falciparum, or mixed infections, according to Thick Blood Smear (TBS) and quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR).

Genotype-driven asthma prescribing of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2-agonist: A cost-effectiveness analysis.

Pediatr Pulmonol

October 2024

Research Group in Pharmacology and Toxicology, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia.

Introduction: Predicting response to inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) + long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) by previously detecting the presence of Arg16Gly ADRB2 genotype is a strategy that could reduce and optimize the management of asthmatic patients. There is a need for economic evaluations to facilitate the implementation of such tests. This research aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of Arg16Gly ADRB2 screening in children with asthma in Colombia.

Introduction: Rehabilitation is essential to foster healthy ageing. Older adults have unique rehabilitation needs due to a higher prevalence of non-communicable diseases, higher susceptibility to infectious diseases, injuries, and mental health conditions. However, there is limited understanding of how rehabilitation is delivered to older adults.

Article Synopsis
  • Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) involves blood clotting issues and pregnancy complications linked to antiphospholipid antibodies and is a common acquired disorder affecting clotting.
  • While strokes can occur in APS patients, there is limited data on the use of thrombolytic treatment (clot-busting drugs) and its safety during such events.
  • A clinical case is presented where thrombolysis was successfully used on an APS stroke patient without complications, highlighting the neurological symptoms associated with APS and stroke.

Introduction: Giardiosis remains one of the most prevalent enteric parasitic infections globally. Earlier molecular-based studies conducted in Egypt have primarily focused on paediatric clinical populations and most were based on single genotyping markers. As a result, there is limited information on the frequency and genetic diversity of infections in individuals of all age groups.

Latin American consensus recommendations for the management and treatment of patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD).

Span J Psychiatry Ment Health

September 2023

Research Center on Neurosciences, University of Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Department of Psychiatry, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Unlabelled: Despite the abundance of literature on treatment-resistant depression (TRD), there is no universally accepted definition of TRD, and available treatment pathways for the management of TRD vary across the Latin American region, highlighting the need for a uniform definition and treatment principles to optimize the management of TRD in Latin America.

Methods: Following a thematic literature review and pre-meeting survey, a Latin America expert panel comprising 14 psychiatrists with clinical experience in managing patients with TRD convened and utilized the RAND/UCLA appropriateness method to develop consensus-based recommendations on the appropriate definition of TRD and principles for its management.

Results: The expert panel agreed that 'treatment-resistant depression' (TRD) is defined as 'failure of two drug treatments of adequate doses, for 4-8 weeks duration with adequate adherence, during a major depressive episode'.

Differential scanning calorimetry in drug-membrane interactions.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

May 2024

Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland; Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland. Electronic address:

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is a central technique in investigating drug - membrane interactions, a critical component of pharmaceutical research. DSC measures the heat difference between a sample of interest and a reference as a function of temperature or time, contributing essential knowledge on the thermally induced phase changes in lipid membranes and how these changes are affected by incorporating pharmacological substances. The manuscript discusses the use of phospholipid bilayers, which can form structures like unilamellar and multilamellar vesicles, providing a simplified yet representative membrane model to investigate the complex dynamics of how drugs interact with and penetrate cellular barriers.

A patient with the E280A mutation and homozygous for Christchurch () displayed extreme resistance to Alzheimer's disease (AD) cognitive decline and tauopathy, despite having a high amyloid burden. To further investigate the differences in biological processes attributed to , we generated induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell-derived cerebral organoids from this resistant case and a non-protected control, using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to modulate expression. In the cerebral organoids, we observed a protective pattern from early tau phosphorylation.

The excessive and irrational use of antibiotics to control bovine mastitis and the informal trade in milk with antibiotic residues are objects of great interest for public health, due to the problems associated with the consumption of milk with antibiotic residues on human, animal, and environmental health, and antibiotic resistance. The objective of this study was to understand the attitudes of dairy farmers towards the self-consumption of milk on the farm, the use of milk with antibiotic residues, and the formal and informal milk trade that generates risks for public health. Mixed methods: cross-sectional and grounded theory.
