The purpose of this research was to evaluate the concentrations, sources and ecological risk assessment of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in water from the La Fe reservoir, Colombia in the months of October and November of 2017 and 2018. Concentrations of PAHs in water were measured with semipermeable membrane devices (SPMD) which allow obtaining the dissolved concentrations of the PAHs in the reservoir, emphasizing the reactivity and bioavailability in the environment. The PAHs analyses were carried out by means of gas chromatography, coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS-MS) with triple quadrupole (QqQ).

Background: Successful guideline implementation depends both on factors extrinsic to guidelines and their intrinsic features. In the Guideline Implementability for Decision Excellence Model (GUIDE-M), "communicating" content (language and format) is one of three core determinants of intrinsic implementability, but is seldom addressed. Our aims were to develop a tool that could be used by guideline developers to optimize language and format during development; identify gaps in this type of guidance in existing resources; and evaluate the perceived need for and usefulness of such a tool among guideline developers.

Background: Follow-up of patients who undergo a total thyroidectomy is performed with thyroglobulin (Tg), and antithyroglobulin antibodies (AbTg). The objective of RAI adjuvant therapy is to negativize Tg to undetectable levels to ease the follow-up. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation of serum Tg values measured 2 weeks after surgery with the Tg value prior to RAI adjuvant therapy in order to define its utility as a reliable predictor of pretherapy Tg and as a potential predictor to avoid RAI adjuvant therapy.

This study aimed to (i) prepare functionalized maghemite nanoparticles for immobilization of Candida rugosa lipase (CRL) by covalent binding, (ii) evaluate the application of the immobilized derivative in the hydrolysis of waste cooking oil (WCO) to fatty acids, and (iii) assess the potential of the hydrolyzed material for biodiesel production by hydroesterification. Maghemite (γFeO) obtained by precipitation of FeCl with NHOH served as an efficient support for covalent immobilization of CRL. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and hydrolytic activity analysis indicated that CRL was covalently immobilized on the surface of the maghemite support.

Background: Recent asthma guidelines for children 6-11 years with persistent asthma advocate three alternatives: SMART (budesonide/formoterol 80/4.5 mcg qd plus additional doses as needed), fixed combination of budesonide/formoterol, and fixed-dose budesonide. Concerns have arisen as to which of the proposed alternatives has the best possible cost-effectiveness profile.

Three mechanisms have been classically implicated, according to Starling's forces: an increase in the hydrostatic pressure gradient (increased portal venous pressure), a reduction in the oncotic pressure gradient (loss of total proteins, especially albumin), and an increase in peritoneal capillary permeability. This latter mechanism, plus the difference between lymph production and excretion (which favors the accumulation of exudate), explains some of the most notable causes of non-hypertensive ascites (according to the serum albumin in ascites gradient (SAAG)), including peritoneal carcinomatosis and tuberculosis.

Introduction: Previous evidence has shown that fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and eosinophil count in induced sputum (EO) are cost-effective relative to standard of care in guiding the management of children with persistent asthma. There is some doubt as if there are differences between these two biomarkers in terms of costs and benefits. Clarifying this doubt would allow prioritization of the design of clinical practice guidelines.

Bacterial antibiotic resistance is a serious global public health concern. Infections caused by colistin-resistant (CRPa) strains represent a serious threat due to their considerable morbidity and mortality rates, since most of the current empirical antibiotic therapies are ineffective against these strains. Accordingly, cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAMPs) have emerged as promising alternatives to control resistant bacteria.

Nanoengineering biosensors have become more precise and sophisticated, raising the demand for highly sensitive architectures to monitor target analytes at extremely low concentrations often required, for example, for biomedical applications. We review recent advances in functional nanomaterials, mainly based on novel organic-inorganic hybrids with enhanced electro-physicochemical properties toward fulfilling this need. In this context, this review classifies some recently engineered organic-inorganic metallic-, silicon-, carbonaceous-, and polymeric-nanomaterials and describes their structural properties and features when incorporated into biosensing systems.

Spider venoms constitute a trove of novel peptides with biotechnological interest. Paucity of next-generation-sequencing (NGS) data generation has led to a description of less than 1% of these peptides. Increasing evidence supports the underestimation of the assembled genes a single transcriptome assembler can predict.

We hypothesized that the general control nonderepressible 2 (GCN2)/eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2) signaling pathway and intracellular protein synthesis (PS) are regulated to maintain milk PS in primary bovine mammary epithelial cells (MECs) under essential amino acid (EAA) starvation conditions. We cultured MECs with 0%, 2% (depletion), and 100% (control) EAA for two exposure times (8 and 24 h), followed by three refeeding (RF) times with 100% EAA (0, 8, and 24 h). Subsequently, we measured cell viability, total protein concentration, and proliferation.
