We present a de novo transcriptome assembly for the non-model Antarctic polychaete worm Microspio moorei (Spionidae) collected during Antarctic field expedition in Fildes Bay, King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula, in 2017. Here, we report the first transcriptome reference array for Microspio spp. The gene sequences of the spionid worm were annotated from a wide range of functions (i.

Food fortification has attracted interest in recent years, due to the understanding that micronutrient deficiency is one of the causes of the global burden of disease, and that food fortification aims to prevent or correct a demonstrated deficiency of one or more nutrients in a specific population or population groups. Nutritional value is an important concern regarding fortification and new product development. However, people are not willing to sacrifice the organoleptic characteristics of food products.

Gestational weight gain is an important indicator for monitoring nutritional status during pregnancy. However, there are no gestational weight gain references created for adolescents or national datasets to enable the construction of such graphs up to date. This manuscript aims to describe the creation of a Latin American dataset to construct gestational weight gain references for adolescents aged 10-19 years old.

Introduction: Dietary intake of (poly)phenols has been linked to reduced adiposity and body weight (BW) in several epidemiological studies. However, epidemiological evidence on (poly)phenol biomarkers, particularly plasma concentrations, is scarce. We aimed to investigate the associations between plasma (poly)phenols and prospective BW change in participants from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort.

Background: The world population is ageing rapidly. Rehabilitation is one of the most effective health strategies for improving the health and functioning of older persons. An understanding of the current provision of rehabilitation services in primary care (PC) is needed to optimise access to rehabilitation for an ageing population.

As cell culture supplements, human platelet lysate (PL) and human platelet lysate serum (PLS) are alternatives to fetal bovine serum (FBS) due to FBS-related issues such as ethical concerns, variability between batches, and the possible introduction of xenogenic contaminants. This study compared the composition and efficacy of PL, PLS, and FBS as supplements in the culture and cryopreservation of human dermal fibroblasts, Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MCS), and adipose tissue (AdMSC). Biochemical components, some growth factors, and cytokines present in each of them were analyzed; in addition, the cells were cultured in media supplemented with 5% PL, 5% PLS, and 10% FBS and exposed to different freezing and thawing solutions with the supplements under study.

Aim: Endodontic microsurgery (EMS) of maxillary molars may represent a complex challenge to the clinician due to the location of the roots and the proximity of the maxillary sinus floor. This report aimed to describe the simultaneous use of a computer-assisted dynamic navigation (C-ADN) system and piezoelectric bony-window osteotomy for the transantral microsurgical approach of a maxillary left first molar with adequate root canal filling and symptomatic apical periodontitis.

Summary: This case report highlights the importance of C-ADN to carry out a minimally invasive buccal surgical access to palatal roots affected by apical periodontitis and provides a practical example to help clinicians make treatment decisions based on the available evidence.

A yeast-based high-throughput screen identifies inhibitors of trypanosomatid HRG heme transporters with potent leishmanicidal and trypanocidal activity.

Int J Antimicrob Agents

March 2024

Instituto de Parasitología y Biomedicina "López-Neyra", CSIC, (IPBLN-CSIC), PTS Granada, Granada, Spain. Electronic address:

Objectives: New drugs are required to treat neglected diseases caused by trypanosomatid parasites such as Leishmania, Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma cruzi. An Achilles' heel of these parasites is their heme auxotrophy; they have an absolute dependence on scavenging this molecule from the host, and trypanosomatid HRG heme transporters (TrypHRG) play an important role in this process. As these proteins are essential for the parasites and have low similarity with their human orthologue, they have been proposed as attractive therapeutic targets.

Unlabelled: Add-on therapy with tiotropium was cost-effective when added to usual care in patients who remain uncontrolled despite treatment with medium or high-dose ICS/LABA in a middle-income country.

Background: A significant proportion of asthma patients remain uncontrolled despite inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists. Some add-on therapies, such as tiotropium bromide, have been recommended for this subgroup of patients.

Introduction: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a prominent cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Due to the increase in Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection, it is important to consider other more effective and safer alternatives compared to vancomycin. This motivates evaluating whether the use of an apparently more expensive drug such as linezolid can be cost-effective in Colombia.

Rationale: Epilepsy is a complex condition and seizures are only one part of this disease. The move from pediatric to adult healthcare system proves difficult for many adolescents with epilepsy and their families. The challenges increase when patients have epilepsies associated with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and motor disorders.

The aim of this study was to compare the viscoelastic properties of a decellularized mesh from the porcine esophagus, prepared by our group, with two commercial acellular tissues derived from porcine small intestine submucosa and bovine pericardium for use in medical devices. The tissues' viscoelastic properties were characterized by creep tests in tension, applying the load in the direction of the fibers or the transverse direction, and also by dynamic-shear mechanical tests between parallel plates or in tension at frequencies between 0.1 and 35 Hz.

The burden of intestinal parasitic infections in Antioquia, Colombia: Impact in childhood growth development and nutritional status.

Gastrointestinal protist (GP) and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections cause significant morbidity among children in poor-resource settings of tropical and sub-tropical countries including Colombia. Few prospective transversal studies investigating how GP and STH infections affect growth development and nutritional status during childhood have been conducted in this country, none of them in the Antioquia Department. This microscopy-based study estimated the prevalence of GP and helminth (including STH) infections in faecal samples from schoolchildren (n = 384) collected during April-May 2019 in three municipalities of the Antioquia Department.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study discusses a rare lung disease in nine children linked to a genetic deficiency of the CCR2 receptor, leading to conditions like pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) and increased vulnerability to infections.
  • This deficiency is characterized by loss-of-function variants, affecting the migration and signaling of immune cells, particularly monocytes, due to a lack of response to CCL-2, a chemokine essential for these processes.
  • Elevated levels of CCL-2 in the blood serve as a diagnostic marker for identifying children with unexplained respiratory issues or recurrent infections, indicating the importance of CCR2 in lung health and immune response.

Introduction: Adjustment disorder (AD) is a diagnosis that must be differentiated from major depressive episode (MDE) because of the therapeutic implications. The aim of this study is to understand the experience of patients who in their lifetime have been diagnosed with AD as well as MDE to establish the characteristics of each disorder.

Methods: A descriptive phenomenological approach was used with in-depth interviews to four patients and the method proposed by Colaizzi to understand the experiences and reach the description of both disorders.
