Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to clarify the dermatological features of Costello syndrome (CS) and distinguish them from other similar syndromes like cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome (CFCS) and types of Noonan syndrome (NS).
  • A ten-year multi-center study involving 31 patients found common skin and hair anomalies in CS, such as excessive eyebrows and various types of skin growths, which can help differentiate CS from CFCS and NS.
  • The findings propose multiple melanocytic naevi as a potential marker for a milder form of CS and suggest that acitretin could be beneficial for treating certain skin conditions, although no clear genotype-phenotype link was identified.

The epidemiology of invasive fungal infections in transplant recipients.

Biomed J

June 2024

University of Angers, University of Brest, Infections Respiratoires Fongiques, SFR Interactions Cellulaires et Applications Thérapeutiques, Angers, France. Electronic address:

Transplant patients, including solid-organ transplant (SOT) and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients, are exposed to various types of complications, particularly rejection. To prevent these outcomes, transplant recipients commonly receive long-term immunosuppressive regimens that in turn make them more susceptible to a wide array of infectious diseases, notably those caused by opportunistic pathogens. Among these, invasive fungal infections (IFIs) remain a major cause of mortality and morbidity in both SOT and HSCT recipients.

Small Extracellular Vesicles Harboring PD-L1 in Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Int J Mol Sci

March 2024

SFR ICAT, Team Carme, MitoVasc Laboratory, UMR CNRS 6015 INSERM 1083, University of Angers, 49000 Angers, France.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA) has been associated with increased cancer incidence and aggressiveness. One hypothesis to support this association is the implication of immune response, particularly the programmed cell death pathway, formed by the receptor PD-1 and its ligand PD-L1. Recent studies have shown dysregulation of this pathway in severe OSA patients.

In the last 5 years, low-dimensional chiral metal-halide semiconductors have attracted great interest in the generation of chiroptical activity. Among this new family of materials, one-dimensional (1D) networks have appeared as the best candidates for strong circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Here, we present a new family of 1D chiral lead-bromide materials prepared from organic //-1-hydroxypropyl-2-ammonium (//-HP2A) cations.

Little is known about the effect of nitrogen nutrition on seedling susceptibility to seed-borne pathogens. We have previously shown that seedlings grown under high nitrate (5 mM) conditions are less susceptible than those grown under low nitrate (0.1 mM) and ammonium (5 mM) in the Arabidopsis- pathosystem.

The Purinergic Nature of Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum.

Biology (Basel)

January 2024

Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI 96822, USA.

Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum (PXE) is an inherited disease characterized by elastic fiber calcification in the eyes, the skin and the cardiovascular system. PXE results from mutations in that encodes an ABC transporter primarily expressed in the liver and kidneys. It took nearly 15 years after identifying the gene to better understand the etiology of PXE.

Bone Marrow-Derived ABCC6 Is an Essential Regulator of Ectopic Calcification In Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum.

J Invest Dermatol

August 2024

Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Physiological calcification in soft tissues is linked to aging and certain genetic disorders, particularly involving ABCC6 gene variations that lead to pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) and other forms of arterial calcification.
  • Research indicates that inflammation plays a significant role in the calcification process in PXE, moving attention from the liver's involvement to the contributions of peripheral tissues.
  • The study found that bone marrow-derived ABCC6 influences calcification, as restoring normal bone marrow in Abcc6 mice significantly reduced mineralization, highlighting the importance of the immune system and inflammation in these conditions.

Molecular Junctions for Terahertz Switches and Detectors.

Nano Lett

February 2024

Institute for Electronics Microelectronics and Nanotechnology (IEMN), CNRS, University of Lille, Av. Poincaré, F-59652 Villeneuve d'Ascq, France.

Molecular electronics targets tiny devices exploiting the electronic properties of the molecular orbitals, which can be tailored and controlled by the chemical structure and configuration of the molecules. Many functional devices have been experimentally demonstrated; however, these devices were operated in the low-frequency domain (mainly dc to MHz). This represents a serious limitation for electronic applications, although molecular devices working in the THz regime have been theoretically predicted.
