Type 3c diabetes mellitus (T3cDM), also known as pancreatogenic or pancreoprivic diabetes, is a specific type of DM that often develops as a result of diseases affecting the exocrine pancreas, exhibiting an array of hormonal and metabolic characteristics. Several pancreatic exocrine diseases and surgical procedures may cause T3cDM. Diagnosing T3cDM remains difficult as the disease characteristics frequently overlap with clinical presentations of type 1 DM (T1DM) or type 2 DM (T2DM).

Introduction: The determination of salicylate concentrations constitutes a critical aspect of medical diagnostics, particularly in emergency settings. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and spectrophotometry are efficient methods commonly utilized for this purpose. In emergency laboratories with limited resources, the validation of a cost-effective and reliable spectrophotometric method for salicylates in plasma becomes imperative.

Consumption of foods such as milk, honey, and eggs contaminated with toxic elements above established norms poses a health risk to the population. This study explores the potential of products from beehives, poultry, and dairy as indicators of environmental pollution caused by toxic substances (Pb, Cd, Hg), seeks contamination sources, evaluates the exposure level, and assesses health risks. Through the analysis of samples from three distinct regions in Algiers, including 30 milk, 30 honey, and 30 poultry egg samples, the study assesses levels of toxic elements (lead, cadmium, and mercury) using ICP-MS and analyzes consumer exposure risk.

BMJ Glob Health

September 2023

Department of Gastroenterology, Postgraduate Medical Education, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Objective: To provide insights into the nature, risk factors, impact and existing measures for reporting and preventing violence in the healthcare system. The under-reporting of violence against healthcare workers (HCWs) globally highlights the need for increased public awareness and education.

Methods: The Violence Study of Healthcare Workers and Systems study used a survey questionnaire created using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) forms and distributed from 6 June to 9 August 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates global practices and challenges in using sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) assays, which can affect male reproductive potential, as outlined in the latest WHO manual.
  • A survey of 436 reproductive clinicians revealed that the most popular SDF assay is TUNEL, with a significant influence from availability on their choices.
  • Clinicians see the value of SDF testing in understanding infertility but face barriers like insufficient professional guidelines and a lack of accepted reference values for interpreting SDF results.

What did CRISPR-Cas9 accomplish in its first 10 years?

Biochem Med (Zagreb)

October 2023

University of Algiers 1, Faculty of Medicine, Algiers, Algeria.

Article Synopsis
  • CRISPR/Cas9 is a powerful technology for gene editing that has been around for 10 years, making it easier to fix diseases by changing genes.
  • It works better than older methods like ZFNs and TALENs because it can precisely cut and change DNA at specific locations.
  • The review discusses CRISPR's major successes and points to the next steps, which will likely involve testing this technology in more clinical trials to help people.

July 2023

Team "Cytokines and NOsynthase, Immunity and Pathogenicity", Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene, BP 32 El Alia, Bab Ezzouar, 16111, Algiers, Algeria. Electronic address:

The effect of helminthic infections on allergic diseases and asthma is still inconclusive. Moreover, there is considerable evidence suggesting that nitric oxide (NO), metalloproteinases and pro-inflammatory cytokines play a significant role in the physiopathology of these diseases. In this sense, the aim of our study is to investigate the ex vivo immunomodulatory effect of the laminated layer (LL, outside layer of parasitic cyst) of the helminth Echinococcus granulosus on NO, IL-17A and IL-10 production.

Background: The outbreak of monkeypox was declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization on 23 July 2022. There have been 60,000 cases reported worldwide, most of which are in places where monkeypox has never been seen due to the travel of people who have the virus. This research aims to evaluate the general Arabic population in regard to the monkeypox disease, fears, and vaccine adoption after the WHO proclaimed a monkeypox epidemic and to compare these attitudes to those of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Typical hyper-IgE syndromes (HIES) are linked to genetic variants in STAT3, IL6ST, or ZNF341, with only 20 patients reported with autosomal-recessive ZNF341 deficiency.
  • Patients with this deficiency show milder symptoms and lower NK cell counts compared to those with dominant STAT3 deficiency, despite having 50% normal STAT3 levels.
  • The review discusses the limited understanding of ZNF341's role and how the combination of reduced STAT3 levels and impaired autoinduction in ZNF341-deficient cells may contribute to their symptoms.

Understanding the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia has always been an unsolved puzzle for modern medicine. This seems to be due to both disease complexity and lack of sufficient knowledge regarding the biological and non-biological anomalies that exhibit schizophrenia subjects. However, dysregulated immunity is a commonly identified feature in affected individuals.
